Ok obviously it is pointless questioning gw style/fluff but for this thread only = what are the things in 40k that don't make sense to you.
Giant hats - why do so many people in 40k have giant hats. You'll get shot
Giant shoulder pads - the shoulder isn't a vital organ - or a smart place to place weight, why is it so big? Just because we love the 80's?
Giant clumpy feet/ flared leg armor - would make moving really slow and difficult
Cheer up / give peace a change - I'm just kidding

Why dont GW make better quality miniature with proper
body proportion ratios like Forge World's have.
*edit big shoulder pads hmm... Broad shoulders represent strength
and generally tough looking.
That and raised shoulder pads actually protects neck area.

Well shoulders aren't a vital organ but if you don't have arms you can't fight, so it's worth protecting them. Saying that marine armour in particular is the most useless clunky armour ever, its like chain swords, good as fiction rubbish in reality.

A power saw would make more sense...
Tau style shoulder pads make more sense... but would make shooting while lying down difficult, which is pretty stupid.
Space Marines, trained for 20 years or so. But don't seem to learn any self preservation... Actually that applies to all the armies in 40k. Makes sense for Nids and Orks

hmm... I hate how fluffwise SM are super invincible killing machines, yet playing against them with my Orks, they are mearly good at the killing part. My regular boyz mobs can kick the living gak out of SM in CC. I think they need to tone down the mega man fluff a tad.

I bet if you were to refight a heroic story, the space marines would be very unheroic and would all have died by turn 6. So much for being superhuman warriors and the emperor's finest! And if thats the way they play in the game they would surely all be wiped out!

You mean MKVIII "Errant" Armor, right? (I only point this out as I'm a BIG fan of that style of armor and I'm working on a big MK8 project as we speak!)
Anyway, I think that the shoulder pad/armor area of a Space Marine does provide a certain amount of extra protection for them from certain angles, and provides an area for the display of Chapter and Squad badges, both of which are an important part of being a Space Marine and all that...

A reason that they have large shoulder pads is that if you look at modern armor used by the military and S.W.A.T have spots underneath the small shoulder pads where bullets can get past, go through the arm, into the torso, and through the heart and both lungs. The large shoulder pads prevent this because the armor begins when the shoulder pad ends.
But, why oh why do the eldar have to look like elves? Is it because they both have names that begin with E?
And why do they use solid swords in the 40k universe, I mean 30,000 years isn't enough time to research and make lightsabers?

What?
There is no reason why SM have large shoulderpads; it's certainly not a tactical decision, so don't make it sound so, halon... They are big because they look ace, and were invented in the 80s.
[edit] Oh and anyway, SM have like 7 hearts and 33 lungs anyway. Plus their ribcage is all fused together and it's a foot thick.
Why do Eldar begin with elves? Is it because they both begin with "E"?
Erm... yes. Eldar were originally called the Space Elves.
I believe Eldar is also an adjective used to describe WFB elves?
I'll let someone else pick you up on the swords thing. Clue: Dark age of Technology.
I do agree with the fluff vs play thing though. I'd love to play a game where my SM opponent gets 30 models and I get 1'000, even if mine are traitor IG!!

And what's the deal with all those rivets in people's armor? Is it like in the grim darkness of the far future there is no welding?
And what about that Nightbringer? I see him on the battlefield yes but it's still daytime when he's there! Kinda defeats the whole purpose of being the Nightbringer if you can't actually bring night.

Slaanesh is all about the experiencing the extreme of anything. What's more extreme than a live battlefield?

I want to know why Space Marines, according to fluff, are supposed to be these huge mountains of men that would make you and I strain our necks to see them eye-to-eye, but yet the minis aren't any taller than the average Imperial Guardsman.
Even Terminators seem puny to what they actually should be.

Well, the SM are supposed to be unkillable, but I was talking about the hammer of the emperor . Average joes need shoulder pads that extend to where the armor begins to protect them. Besides, 80's shoulders went out vertically while the 40k shoulder pads extend horizontally.

Even so, they still have plasma pistols, guns, cannons, and plasma hand dryers. So why not plasma swords. I mean even the IG have frikkin' laser guns attached to their frikkin' heads(or hands), so laser swords or plasma swords should be possible.
