Okay I had a really odd run-in with someone on EVE... I guess this goes into Dakka Discussions since it is directly 40K related...
You will just lol when you read (Maria = Me, Carnifex Invictus = someone who never heard of 40k... what are the odds that his name would be that...)
EDIT: EXPLANATION: Okay the point was the guy had spent time in EVE and had been receiving dozens of emails and messages about 40K Carnifexes and Space Marine Captain Invictus. He had NO clue about what the hell was going on until I explained it and interesting way to introduce someone to WH40K.
Also it was 3:40 AM last night and I was drunkish when I made this post. Sorry for the weirdness.
Convo
Maria Foxe > Carnifex?

Maria Foxe > yeah i think so
Maria Foxe > Captain Invictus, rings a bell
Maria Foxe > space marines
Carnifex Invictus > I get that in mail a lot, yep.
Maria Foxe > lol great coincidence man, lol

When we use this stuff there are upsides and downsides:
Upside:
We might understand this crap.
Downside:
We might end up crazed.

Carnifex Invictus means something like "invincible butcher". It sounds really cool, though.

The OP was playing a game called EVE. EVE is a spaceship based MMO where you fly around and do stuff while doing different jobs, shooting mining, buying/ selling etc. through different star systems and fighting space battles.
All in all this seemed a pretty tamed down version of a conversation, as EVE players can get a little bit... excited.
Personally I'm not a real big fan of EVE and I kind of think it a bit restrictive.
There are no bioships, there are no away team based missions, and it is likened to playing Pong while looking at stock market quotes then something of an action shooting shoot shoot game.
The game personally puts me to sleep whith the new age space music, and the flying around.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

And here in this thread we see the great divide between EVE Online players and 40k players. Maybe one day, this wall will be battered down, and our children's children will be playing quick patrol games of Warhammer 40k the 8th edition in between checking their cyber-stocks on EVE online 3.

I don't see why you would need any knowledge of mmos to understand that post. It's just the OP and some guy talking about his screen name and how it relates to 40k.

Carnifex is a latin word meaning "executioner".
invictus is a latin word meaning unconquer, unconquerable, undefeated.

in fact a carnifex is a specific type of executioner, only allowed to execute certain strata of people from Roman society. Same thing with a lictor, just different levels of people.

What made it even funnier to me is that a few of the original replies asked what in the hell EVE even was.
I guess it's a double-edged sword.
I also find it pretty hilarious that a lot of people tend to assume that GW holds claim over everything even mentioned in 40k.

"And what is wrong with their life? What on earth is less reprehensible than the life of the Levovs?"
- American Pastoral, Philip Roth
Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |
