After much gnashing of teeth I think I will strip and re do him! he's (as with all Catachan's) hard to paint due to the skin being such a major focal point and to have it look good like Dave said, you tend to paint it in a complimentary colour to go with the fatigues but sometimes it needs to be darker/lighter etc. I imagine my force being (masters of any theater of war) mainly based in arid environment so they could be quite dark and sunburnt, I think i was just a bit too excited to paint him and my blends should have been much smoother, I'll do some research on painting skin and have another crack at him next week.

Does anyone know how simple green goes on resin? i'd hate to ruin his face and legs!is it safe to do?

also can anyone give me some advice on taking photo's? I have a light box-check, I have a digital SLR-check (a Canon EOS400D) but I seem to either get a really bright pic that shows things to much and looks washed out and shiny or a pic that looks more true to the colours but is too dark and not sharp enough? I'm not up with the jargon of F-stops and stuff but I'm a fast learner ;-)

I've just been painting skin on cultists and that was daunting and that was only arms and faces. I think its what happens painting everything in power armour for so long.

Practice is the key and having the right skin tones which I've realised I'm missing one of after looking round the net thats used a lot.

OK, now that I'm finally not looking at that through my phone... it's really good! Really looks Stalloneesque.

I have a very good guide to painting realistic skin tones- downloaded it from the GW website before those wanky new paints came out (I say that but the white they have now is pretty good, the textured paints though? Pish).
The key to good looking skin isn't Garnier but grey paint. I usually start with 3:1 of tanned: codex grey, wash with 2:1 scorched brown: chaos black and then highlight the base mix up with bleached bone. You can vary the level of tanning by altering the base coat.

I was home sick today with some kind of bug couldn't keep any food down and kept getting the dizzy's! in between snuggling under my doona while the rain pelted down and having a few sleeps I base coated the baggage on my chimera's and then washed them with Devlin mud, so they're ready to go next session

I also had a brainwave! while i slept I somehow came up with a thought! Hmmmm my sleeping mind said, you've got those acetate sheets done Damo..... what else can you do with them? you've figured out stained glass windows and glowing comp screens.....so.....

Eh? what's this you say?

how about AWESOME!

Yes, it's the canopy of my Vendetta's! I wanted to do something different with them, originally I was thinking of sanding the consoles down and inserting the clear sheets lit from underneath .... too hard, so now i have heads up displays! they look pretty cool I think and am happy with them (unlike Marbo) now i need to scrutinize the instructions to work out how to paint and mask parts so it all fits together looking HAWT!

He is Joe Pineapples, an ABC Warrior from the British comic 2000AD.

Very very awesome strip, at least the older stuff.

Ah, i thought I recognised the design! I used to have a bunch of the old 2000AD comics my nan bought me when I was a boy! I just didn't remember the connotation to Joe pineapple! lets hope his namesake does some good on the tabletop!

Hey Shin, I used the same method as my stained glass windows, I saved some computer screen designs from terragenesis.com and sized and had them printed on clear acetate sheet then traced around the canopy and used the hole as a template to get a decent looking heads up kind of look for them to stick them in I dabbed some plastic glue on some card and ran the edge lightly through it then pushed it into the corner being careful not to get any on the main parts so it didn't fog up! lets hope it works still when I do the pilots and assemble them later

Marbo got some paint! if i'm totally honest i'm not overly happy with his paint job but I like the look and feel of the conversion, now I need comments to buoy me up or tear me down it was the first time i had to paint a more expanse of flesh with his body, and I made his pallor kind of ruddy so he looks a bit sunburned or flushed from exertion? I also finished inking the last chimera, those bloody vehicles have so many rivets it's like heaven!

anyway here's my Marbo conversion, no custom name yet but i'm thinking

I don't think he needs stripping. I think a little more work on the figure as is will get you where you want to be. it'd be shame to waste the work you've already done on him.

If I have to be mega-critical, I'd say your flesh blending is a little rough in places. But not gakky rough - it just looks a bit unfinished to my eye. A little bit of blending on the extreme shades, and in places like where the skin covers the radius of the lower left forearm need to be brought up a little more. Bear in mind that the photos also blow up the figure from about an inch tall to 9 inches tall (without the base) so all the tiny flaws are exaggerated. Fix the eyes. they look quite close together, so just widening them a little will sort that out. I'd really suggest trying to sculpt some 80's Stallone Rambo hair onto him. Maybe try on a test model first.

Finally, something that probably won't show up in photos - matt varnish the whole thing when you're finished, but then go over his rippling, sexy pecs, biceps, triceps.. and so forth with a mixture of satin and gloss varnish for that completely not homo-erotic sexy oiled-man look that Sly was sporting during the era. Using gloss will be too shiny, and satin probably not quite shiny enough. It'll also contrast nicely with his matt-varnished fatigue pants.

I think he needs a nipple adjustment... shouldn't they be in the same place on both pecs?

Cheers guys :-) but I have him swimming as we speak! in simple green, I know I can do a better job (lets hope i actually do it though) I intend on listening to all the comments and advice and trying to make him pretty damn good! I especially like the oiled up rippling no homo body idea! if i can get skin tone down it'll work well! the eyes are going to be tricky as they are literally very close together due to the sculpt but I shall endeavor to make it look good! I'll try and get some paint on him this week but i want to start my Detta's and my 3 NEW TANKS! Boo Yaaa! thanks Ashrog! i've already started fixing up the Devil Dog, added a driver and some new hoses to the rear, pics tomorow!

OH, and you need to paint the face on his watch next time. I want to be able to tell what time it is on it... in two different time zones... and the date. Not the cheezy date as in just the day, but the day, month and year.

O.k fine! if that's what you want I'll try it! but i didn't paint it as i kinda thought it would be one of those leather watch covers that some hunters wear so you don't ruin your watch or get reflections ruining your sneaky sneaky attacks!

I have been fiddling around today with some Nerd stuff but nothing really exciting, I should have some shots tomorrow of what i'm doing, I am currently painting the pilots in the Detta's and with the canopy over them it's not as clear as i'd like, so I'll still paint the guys and take some pics so you know when the tops are on that they're painted o.k! I also gave the interiors of them a bit of a fast paint, looks good but not crazy detailed.

And I primed and white primed my Lord Commissar! so he's also on the workbench as well as the tanks, i've started the Devil Dog by beginning to paint some hazard stripes on the cover section over the drums. I also primed marbo again and tried to fix one of the sentinels i got, it didn't really work as i couldn't strip the paint of it (dunno what they used ) so i have one sentinel on sprue and I'll buy another one so i have 2 and instructions to build them

Oh and his NIPPLES ARE FINE!
