So, No. 6 ended with an incomprehensible ending, and the main character has a USB that he says will explain everything.
Then destroys it.
Tatami Galaxy, UGH. that anime.

I have finally finished one of the strangest anime I have ever seen; The Mystic Archives of Dantalian .

The anime IS beautiful. It's set after World War I, something of a rarity, one of the main characters is a war veteran Air Force Pilot, another huge rarity. The backgrounds, the characters, everything looks (and sounds) beautiful with an amazing attention to detail, the production values look out of this world. Heck, I don't remember another anime that completely changed it's art style for a single episode (and I don't mean "looks like crap" like the famous Gurren Lagann's ep 4 (and KLK's)) all because of the story:

This is how it usually looks:
Spoiler:

This is episode 9, it looks something out of Studio Ghibli:
Spoiler:

The McGuffin of this anime are "Phantom Books", books that shouldn't exist in our world, for the knowledge they contain, shouldn't be known, this means it will be some kind of "magic" stored in myths, legends, poems, texts and all kinds of beautiful things that make me feel like an uncultered swine for not knowing 99% of them. It's rather odd how every single person they encounter seem to know about these damned books and what they contain, it's as if lowliest of peasant spent his life reading, nevermind the rich.

Even the OP and ED are stunning. The OP is a beautiful, beautiful piece, but the ED? The ED is kinda like the anime, unique. It's amazing how unique it is. It's creepy. It's disturbing. It's fantastic, I love it.

OP:
Spoiler:

ED:
Spoiler:

And the strangest thing of them all? It leads to NOTHING. Absolutely zero, zip, nada. This is what makes me say this is one VERY strange anime. All the episodes are that, episodes, there's no big connection between any of them, no big plot when it IS screaming for it. This is also pisses me off a bit, the promisse of an amazing plot was there, but nope, I only get one lame final episode that felt rushed. Hell, 2 characters I absolutely loved only show up in one episode (ok, and VERY briefly in other) and that's it.

Still, it was a very different and beautiful experience.

The art style for that does look pretty good ^^^ Don't know if I'd actually watch something that peculiar though

In other news, still waiting for MSG Iron Blooded Orphans to get interesting...

Is this even a thing? In the encyclopedic knowledge you have of anime this is the strangest anime you've seen. I'm fairly certain you've seen hundreds if not thousands of anime and anime is known for being weird. This has to be the weirdest effing thing I will ever see then should I choose to watch it.

Holy feth Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of the most fethed up anime I've seen from a perspective that ain't nobody "okay".

It is a slow paced show, but its good, real good.

Edit: I've torn through episodes 21-33 today/tonight... And I don't think I've seen a more fethed anime... LIke it's not gory, it's not violent (it has some combat), it's not vulgar, but every character is flawed in an extreme way, and no one is going to have a happy ending and yet... It's so good. It really speeds up after the Black Rose arc gets going.

If you haven't seen this show, or it's been a long time since you have give it another visit.

You know, I have thought about it, and I have 3 conclusions:

- The lack of any apparent plot. I don't like the whole "LOL, he destroys everything with one punch!" nor do I find it funny. If it's to be episodic / plot-less, I prefer either something relaxing like Non Non Biyori, or a murder mystery / investigation like the "The Mystic archives of Dantalian".

- The MC. I dislike Saitama. He's an idiot. A very strong idiot, but an idiot. He reminds me of Luffy. My favorite One Piece character is Akainu for a reason.

- I dislike the gore in this show. Yep, as strange as it sounds, I find it very distasteful. I like a good ol' violent fight and death (in fact, I even rejoiced when a certain character was being stabbed over and over and over again in Overlord), but I dislike watching insides being splattered on the walls. There's a reason I refuse to watch SAW and other gore-y movies.

There gets to be more plot flow and character development as the show progresses. Saitama may be an airhead, but he's also shown some very profound and insightful character.

Lies

...

Jk, I personally did not like the show either. The plot that existed wasn't of interest to me and the personality that they give to the MC didn't interest me much either. If I had seen this show in highschool or middleschool I would probably have enjoyed it (Like I did DBZ, FairyTail, Naruto). Fighting series and Shonen rarely appeal to me nowadays

I like One Punch Man. Who ever is doing Iron Blooded Orphans is getting mailed a fething medal. I want to try that Mystic Archives one, because after over two years of accumulated watching hours, I'm a jaded bastard.

As a side note I desperately want the Gundam + Jazz music that's forth coming.

Ok, im watchin Death PArade again.....and im realizing how stupid and unable they are to make it make sense
1: A human cannot be judged by another human only by an arbiter. Ok. Makes sense, kinda
2: Arbiters cannot have emotions, but they clearly do. One has fun, a human emotion, one is bored, a human emotion, another gets angry. and EMOTION
3: How is old maid supposed to bring thr worst out of humanity?
4: So, sense humans can judge humans, arbiters must, but they just make arbiters, with not concept of who a human is, what they do, and why they are there. Given one training session, then are set to see if souls get destroyed or reincarnated. My summer job had more in depth training then that.
5: How do they get stuff from the human world? HOW!!!!!!!
6: why is a being older than jesus is reading a book for 5 year olds
7: how does a mannequin eat food?

I tried to get thaton the Anime Club Roster, but they created a new rule on the spot for it. No Waifu bait shows.
Also, we have a new unofficial rule in the club. No. 6 will never be allowed on the roster again. IT is on the short list of banned anime.

I finally finished Revolutionary Girl Utena...

I'm just going to go sit in this corner and cry for a while. If you like shoujo shows, magical girl shows, shows with a strong psychological feel, then you will probably enjoy Revolutionary Girl Utena.

As someone that was a casual anime fan that knew of Evangelion, I've never heard of Utena until two friends started to suggest I watch it, it is kind of weird that Evangelion was the show that has stuck with so many anime fans over the years when I feel that what people say Eva has done, Utena has done better...

Note: I've only watched 3 episodes of Evangelion, so I'm going off of my biased opinions of the show and what I've heard others say about Eva.

You need to really watch the rest of Eva mate. Utena and Eva are both classics with good cause (Utena is badly in need of a Sailor Moon Crystal style remake imho) both are psychological/cerebral shows.

Oh. Speaking of KanColle. Finished one of my newer cosplays.

So I tried to give Eva a shot, but there were probably a few factors as to why I didn't proceed farther than I did.
1) I can't stand Shinji as a character, and if I can't stand the MC of a show I tend to drop it
2) Some of the writing seemed really bad, like it was trying to be cerebral just to be cerebral instead of creating those feelings naturally through the course of the show
3) It's a historical piece at this point. It doesn't hold up when compared to other anime from its time, so you have to really want to watch it to get through it
4) I will admit that there was some hesitance because of how much a pedestal that people placed this show on that I didn't think that it could live up to that hype.
5) Most of the people that I know that greatly enjoyed it were at the appropriate age for when Evangelion would resonate with viewers. To me, as a 26 year old guy, Shinji was just a whiny teenager that didn't want to leave his childhood safety net. It's part of the same reason I had trouble teaching Catcher in the Rye for my student teaching course. I couldn't identify with Holden, and thus it made it difficult for me to pass that on to my students (It should be noted I had not read Catcher in the Rye until I had to teach it).

Eva is still on my list of shows to watch, and Utena probably placed me in the appropriate mindset to go back and watch it.

1: You are not meant to like him. Not even sympathize with him
2: Yeah
3:Yeah
4:That pedastal is unduly deserved, especially after it came out that all the christian imagery was used willy nilly with no real purpose behind it.
5: I never liked holden caulfield. I always felt he was meant to be a scathing indictment of whiny self rightous teenagers.

Adults aren't supposed to like Holden, and.by the same.logic, adults aren't supposed to like Shinji. A teenager going through the same gak as Shinji (dealing with his urges, feelings towards his parents, the responsibility that is being thrust on him because he's older, etc.. will identify with Shinji and hopefully they will understand that sometimes you have to get in the fething robot.

Side note for KM: The Utena Blurays are fantastic, the show does not need a Crystal type update. It just needs a good marketing plan to let people know it exists.

I'll disagree Alf, and the Utena blurays are in my house. You can't reuse that much animation and not deserve a tune up.

I'd say watch the Evangelion movies instead of the series- basically the same premise, all the important bits, but with updated animation, and without the episode-after-episode grind. They were my first introduction to NGE, and I'm rather glad of that. Haven't even seen the series, but I know the story, characters, and basic plotline.

My opinion on evangalion isnt so much that it is a deconstruction of Mech Genre, more of a badly done parody.
With the fake deep imagery, along with the horrible budget problems, aswell as, honestly, the whole "Crazy means their deep characters" kinda characterization, im not in love.

Anno has openly admitted that Evangelion is little more than his masterful trolling of Anime

Doesn't really excite me he's involved in the next Godzilla film XD

I would be excited that Shinji Higuchi is also directing it with Anno. While Higuchi doesn't have a lot of credits behind his name. He did direct the live action Attack on Titan film which was fantastic from a special effects point of view, as the Titans were actual people in makeup rather than crappy cgi. So I'm hoping that Anno will deal with the characters while Higuchi deals with the monsters. Also if Anno doesn't tell Higuchi to "get in the fething monster" we've failed as a society.
