Ok, so in preparation for my upcoming Krieg Army, I am looking for a cheaper modeling puddy or equivalent to model a muddy base... other suggestions for getting the same affect are greatly appreciated. THANK YA much!

buy milliput or supersculpey
supersculpey is a bit harder since you need to cut it loose and let it cure in a oven.

You can make press molds of a few competed bases and use regular elmers glue to make the base topppers. You could make the mold itself out fo greenstuff or something cheap like supersculpy. If they are pretty thin it won't cost much and should be pretty easy to do five or ten at a time. You could also do this with greenstuff or any other media that won't bond directly to the baked super sculpy.

This method is works somewhat ok for more detailed things like icons for vehicles, but since you just want mud it should work pretty well.

No way.... the cheapest alternative by far is to buy some patching plaster for drywall repairs and mix it with enough water that it is runny but can hold some shape on your base, and apply with a small flat blade. Some teasing in some spots can produce waves, and paint the whole thing your favorite muddy brown color and douse it with a wash. A tub of the patching plaster costs 2 bucks or so.

Add very finely grained sand to the patching plaster, in spots or mix it in if you want more stones in your mud. I reccomend buying all modelling sand from the fish-department of pet stores. It is way cheaper (10-150 times ) than in model stores.

Tango Mike for the info! Now I just need to get out of my own little sandy hell, and this project can begin!

Around my area the pet stores have a very good range of different grain-sizes to choose from, that is rarely the case with gardening stores. And the price is just silly low anyhow.

I suggest basing your models on a dirt basing schemes, but placing indentations in the "dirt". Create a mixture of Water Effects and brown - whether it be inks or paints. Apply this into those indentations and leaking out of areas as well. It will dry w/ a brownish tinge and appear to be wet as long as it is done well.

Vallejo make a great range of texture mediums as well that are perfect for bases.

The red oxide paste, rough grey pumice, and others are awesome for making muddy bases.

I would consider the use of Acrylic gel media. There are various types which different textures and could be used to make muddy ripples and so on. They can be coloured with paint.

Check the Liquitex site for info.

Again, since he was looking for cheap, an easy mud base also could just be some PVA glue (like 38 cent elmers) mixed with some potting soil pinched from the wife's plants. Paint brown, give a wash, presto. You get the idea.

Yeah, I usually do. It works for mud, or urban if you drybrush layers of grey that get successively lighter.
