I heard this as some scuttlebutt concerning Alessio's not attending Adepticon as was planned. Anyone heard anything about this? Is it only Indy Tournements that they are not allowed to attend anymore? Any substance to this rumour?

Well, the cost of flying over, staying in a hotel and all the other costs combined would point towards cutting back on this type of stuff.

With Gw making a concerted effort to decrease expenditures, this rumor makes sense to me.

Although I can't add anything to it, it seems to have enough substance to me.

I would be surprised if the GW guest speaker had to pay. I had always assumed that the sponsoring tourney paid for the flight/hotel of the guest speakers.

Adepticon has always picked up the travel/hotel costs of guests invited to the convention. Alessio is no longer able to attend (and no, I don't know the reason why) - Gav Thorpe will be attending instead.

GW may have just cut back on costs, like the rest of the world is doing.

Adepticon is exactly the type of player based event that they would hope to see start up elsewhere in the country. They just may not have it in the budget to fly him over. Games Day in Baltimore looks a bit thin as well in the guest department.

Hmmm. Looks like another kick in the balls to the customers from GW is a distinct possibility.

Gav can show up since he no longer works for the company. So that's neither here nor there really. Cool though, I'll have him sign my Dark Eldar Codex to go with my Eldar/Orks signed by Phil Kelly.

If GW , by way of Jervis, thinks the game shouldn't be made for tournaments then why would they allow someone from their team to give tacit support for the tournament by attending. It seems Jervis' revalations that the game is more than just a set of rules for tournaments is the direction he wants the game to go. He's putting his money where his mouth is and not allowing game developers, who's he's in charge of, to go. Alessio was all set to go at no charge to GW, but backed out at the last minute with no explaination. I'm sure he didn't back out as much as Adepticon was told by a 3rd party he wasn't coming. The GW staff in the US does support the tournament as an avenue to drive sales, but development in England is controlled by someone else.

None of these arguments make sense.

Guest speakers at tournaments and conventions do well to increase plays interest in the game, as well as allowing them to see how the design team works and maybe even get an idea about up coming content. It isnt in GWs interest to prevent this, especially if the events pay all the costs for the speaker themselves.

While Jervis may dislike tournaments himself the directors would rightly see any events where their staff were asked to speak as another opportunity to promote the games and the company, and over rule him (although i doubt very much that Jervis would have any complaint about any of the dev team attending an event as it makes the hobby as a whole more enjoyable, which is his goal).

Alessio could have pulled out for any number of reason and this thread is just pointless GW bashing.

Most likely the devs are staying home because they aren't allowed to talk about anything new anyway. If the studio open day was a closed session you can imagine what we might be getting on a non-GW thing.

Alessio was not able to attend. AdeptiCon has made arrangements for Gav Thorpe to attend this year.

GW as we all know is undergoing some internal changes with the merger into one North American unit.

Once that is all worked out.. I am sure GW will let us know the future plans for the Grand Tournaments as well as Indy Events.

They still have some great people involved at Games Worshop North America. So I'm looking forward to what they got planned.

I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with snubbing a tournament or any anti-tourney sentiment either.

I figured it was cost, but that was nixxed when it was mentioned that Adepticon picked up the fare.

Perhaps it just doesn't fit into his work schedule or something simple like that.

I doubt it warrants as much fuss as we are garnering it though.

It definatly warrants a fuss if its true...and I heard it from a source that is fairly trustworthy.

Didnt really know we were harshly BASHING GW here, but its definatly enough to start a rumour thread on....especially if anyone has an opinion or heard the same.

And yes...thats basically what I heard, Alessio isnt allowed to go as per GW and this is part of the reason that Gav is availiable. Whether or not there is any truth to that is the question.

There are many valid reasons for a speaker to back out.

This seems counter-intuitive. Isn't it good for a designer to meet the unwashed masses once in a while?

Then again, GW's past practice shows they have the apptitude to make piss poor decisions.

I'd doubt it. If Adepticon pay the airfare etc, why ban staff from going.

However, taken at face value, whereby Alessio isn't allowed to go by GW, that could be down to a project he is working on, prior engagement etc.

GW has earned "Bashing" . They have tried over the last year and a half to two years to make it better , I will give them credit.

But they're not the cute , young girl they were when we started dating them , and we're not the 15 year old hormone driven young lads eather. It's going to take a little more than batting her eye and saying "sorry for being a B!tch last night" to keep us in love with her.

Or Alessio could have had a family emergency. Just because he backed out at the last minute doesn't make it a GW conspiracy. Especially since it's one guy's theory.

Even with adepticon picking up the travel and lodging, he's still on the GW payroll, and is either giving up a weekend or getting paid. Having a key employee out of the line up for 3-5 days hurts any business.

I say he has a huge boil on his bottom and can not sit down to fly or maybe GW does not want him badgered to reveal the next great thing …. The end of the Lord of the Ring line.
