Since I've finally gotten my grubby mitts on a digital camera, I've decided to start a painting log that I'll endeavor to update twice a month as a means to keep me focused on getting as many well painted miniatures painted as my free time allows. Without further a due here's my latest completed works:
Fully assembled and painted:
1 x 10 man squad of IG with Sergeant, Grenadier, and Vox Caster
1 Leman Russ Battle Tank with hull mounted Heavy Bolter, Heavy Bolter side sponsons, pintle mounted Heavy Stubber and Battle Cannon
1 Chimera with Multi-Las, hull mounted Heavy Bolter and pintle mounted Heavy Stubber

Next up:
3 missile launcher heavy weapons teams
3 mortar heavy weapons teams
2 autocannon heavy weapons teams

I like your scheme, the Chimera looks good and so do the troops.
On the 2nd pick of the tank, there are some brown/orange smudges that don't fit IMO.
Overall good looking minis.

Yeah, I see what you mean about my attempt at highlighting the top of the battlecannon's bore. Unfortunately I haven't quite figured out how to highlight barrels very well yet and being that the battlecannon is such a large, dominating feature of the Leman Russ, it draws a lot of attention to my poor efforts. The color is really bestial brown, which is what I've used to highlight all of the scorched brown portions. In addition to generally being poorly executed highlights, the flash also makes them look worse than they really are.. Any tips on how to make them look a little less like random smudges and more like actual highlights?

jackinthetank wrote:Very nice painting scheme there- magma world guards?

Actually, I'm painting them for a friend who's paying me in miniatures. The only thing he told me was that he did not want them in a camouflage pattern and that he thought red uniforms + black armor would look good. After a test miniature, I decided there needed to be a third color and tried to pick something that matched and was more unique than what most people used. Personally, I don't know much about the fluff for the army itself, but I would wager their colors are used similarly to Space Marine Chapters' bright colors in that their bright colors are to warn the enemy of their impending doom and that they'd rather their opponent see them coming as they're some type of feared shock troops. Although, I find the thought of "small, elite fighting force" as the anti-thesis to IG, but it's not my army so whatev.

Looks pretty good. Personally though I am not a fan of the extreme white highlighting - grey would look better, in my opinion.

Gorgeous neat paintjob.

They catch your eye even from a fair bit away.
Any chance of getting some closeups of the infantry guys?

I actually tried it out and initially didn't like it until I finished. It gives them a kinda anime feel that I like. It's not the typical dirty, drab beaten-the-hell-out-of IG that everyone's used to seeing. Painting this army though really makes me want to start a Tau force of my own, lol.

After working for a few hours on the weapon teams I decided to get a start on a commisar and what started out as a small break from working on "normal joes" turned into a 3 hr painting session focused on one model Anyways, here's the result:

Just a little something to whet your appetite. Now, back to the weapon teams..

Well, after completing approx. 70% of 2 autocannon teams and a missile launcher team I decided to reward myself by painting an officer with power sword and plasma pistol. Here's the pics below, I think they came out pretty good.

Not entirely sure if I like how the power sword came out.. It doesn't look great and it looks even worse in the pics, especially the ones with the flash. Oh well.. I was trying to find an easy way to make it stand out and look good. I guess I took to easy a route with it..

Good looking officer and heavy teams!
Maybe drybrush the brown over the tank barrel or thin it down into a wash.

Welp, the paint must help because I caught a thorough trouncing at the hands of these guys and the rest of their army (who're still barely assembled, much less painted). The game ended with me only having 2 baal predators (which we used despite my use of the new space marine codex.. the dakka dakka is too tempting), a banged up razorback with no weapon and one sole land speeder surviving out of my squadron of 3. It was a good game though..

Actually, they're from a planet with dark, nutrient-rich, black potting soil... Not buying that one? Oh well. I'll get around to it eventually

I tried dry brushing, it just didn't look right to me.. I'll prolly try again later highlighting it a different way.

While not really finished in any way shape or form. I thought I would show that I'm done stagnating with my pal's IG by showing the Leman Russ Vanquisher I converted out of a salvaged Russ chassis and a Basilisk barrel:

Just finished assembling my pal's Company Command Box Set. I do have to say that I'm partly impressed and partly disappointed in the kit. High points include lots of customizable bits for making up to a 5 man command in several configurations. Low points are the obvious cheapskating on GW's part in the design of their special weapons(the flamer is identical to the one from the infantry platoon box set and both the meltagun and plasmagun are direct copies of the space marine weapons just with an IG arm already attached and a small side peg added for the second arm to attach to). Also, it would have been nice if there was an option to NOT use the bionic arm if you wanted to equip a member with a power weapon, but oh well.. Anyways, here's some pics of what he wanted assembled:
Heavy Flamer, Meltagun, Plasmagun, Medic and Officer with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon:

Here's some pics of a freshly assembled Valkyrie and Penal Legionaires:

I never imagined the Valkyrie was nearly as large as it is. It's like a Land Raider with wings. Makes me wonder where you'd try to hide it to avoid fire, given 5th ed. LOS rules.. but it's still a very cool model.

Due to not having an official model to represent these guys I had to get creative to give them a look that wouldn't be easily confused for normal guardsmen. Most of the conversion work was directed at the penal custodian and his kill switch for his underlings.

Well, I'm painting them for a friend and the only stipulation he gave me was that he did not want the typical camouflage style most people paint their IG with. So I took a couple of random colors and put them together for their equipment. Whether they're Imperial or traitor I know not..

Well, my painting log has definitely fallen to the wayside for the time being since my pal got his IG for the Ard Boyz tourney and hasn't had a chance to give them back for me to get anymore painting done. BUT, I do have a brief update here. It's a conversion based on the left overs from a Basilisk I hacked up to convert his Vanquisher for him. I've spent the past month puzzling over what the hell I was going to do with it, so I decided to use it to experiment with plasticard work. I have to say, for my first attempts with the stuff, the results are pretty good.
One of the things that annoyed me the most with 40k tanks is that they have 0 resemblance to real tanks. Something that doesn't matter too much for some factions, but for one like IG, that's supposed to be analogous to our modern military it's earned a top spot on my 40k pet peeves.
First off, I replaced the circa WWI wrap around tank tracks with something more modern. Then, I filed off all of the pointless rivets, because as far as I know the Imperium hasn't forgotten how to weld. Also, I raised the side armor up a bit to provide some ground clearance on the road wheels, which are now exposed as well. In addition, I hacked off a lot of the excess side armor. I scored the plasticard at regular intervals to look like easy to replace armor paneling, whether the effect came off as desired, I think I'll have to wait until I paint it to be sure. Another change was that I cut down the gun platform and lowered it into the hull of the vehicle to reduce it's profile. I had intended to enclose the hull around the gun, but given the IG rules, I figured it would cause confusion over whether it had an enclosed crew compartment... I may still add one.
Now I've come to the main problem with using it in a game: What kind of ordinance piece is it? It's missing roughly 3" of barrel that a Basilisk would have and it really doesn't resemble the drawing of a Colossus or Medusa. It may work as a Griffon, although I would rather field it as a Colossus.
Anyways, here's the pics:

Here's another long awaited update to my plog. It originally was a chimera, now I'm not fully sure what it is. Before anyone says anything, YES I know it's missing a top hatch.. I just can't find the bits for it, I guess I'll have to order them separately from somewhere. That being said, once I get my top hatch and a heavy stubber, I intend to run it as a Chimera with heavy bolter, multi-laser and heavy stubber. (a great value for only 65 pts).
I feel like the sides are barren, but maybe once I start slopping some paint on it, it will look better. I still haven't decided if I like how the chassis came out.. I may abandon this project and instead turn it into a trukk for my ork boyz. Anyhow, outside of the most drastic change (the hull), I replaced the multi-laser's barrel with an open barrel.
The theme I'm centering this army around is of a lost regiment forced to survive millenia on a planet without aid of the Imperium. This of course led to a loss of technology and knowledge. So, they've stopped putting the imperial aquila all over their equipment and also have lost the manufacturing capabilities to produce any laser weaponry that requires any level of miniaturization. This has led to their lasguns and multi-lasers being replace by varying calibres of autoguns. I also increased the length of the hull-mounted heavy bolter as I always thought they looked a whee bit to snub-nosed for heavy machineguns. Then, I added wheels to give it the appearance of a lighter APC and also to spare the tread bits for my heavy weapon drones. Anyways, here's what I've got so far:

Here's yet another belated update to my extremely slow moving plog. It's the beginnings of an infantry platoon I plan to field.
Here is 1st Squad

with close ups of a Sergeant toting an SMG (counts as a pistol and CCW),

a grenadier using a breach loaded under-barrel grenade launcher

and an autonomous heavy weapons drone armed with an autocannon

as well as my first attempts at battle damage on a rifleman I call "Cpl. Die Hard"

Also, my Infantry Platoon's Command Squad:

Thanks for the positive words of encouragement. I really haven't seen too much activity on my Plog for some reason.. Anyways, I'm currently at work putting together my first squad of Catachans who I plan to use as an infiltrating veteran squad. This squad will also show my first attempt at converting lasguns to shotguns, so in the next couple weeks I should have those up, but with the holidays and other insanity it may not be very soon.

Just recently finished this veteran squad and haven't had a chance to update the photos. This unit will be unique to my army in that it will be the only Catachan models in the force. Their lightly armored appearance lends to their background as scouts and sappers. They are led by a converted Space Marine scout who represents Gunnery Sgt. Harker and are equipped with meltabombs, a demolition charge(which can't be seen in the pictures), 3 flamers, shotguns and a heavy bolter drone providing them with a wide range of capabilities. Without dragging this out further, Here we go:

I really like everything about this army, with one exception.
The wheeled APC just does'nt feel right to me.
I feel the wheels are either too few or too small.
Considering the size and wieght of the vehicle, I think there should either be more , or larger wheels.
That aside , I think your troops are great, espeacally the rocket team. Having the loader bracing the gunner was a nice touch.

Thanks for the positive input. I'm not really very fond of the APC myself. I feel as if I need to make some sort of change to the front and profile of it, but I can't think of any easy changes... I may scrap it and turn it into a trukk for my orks, I don't know..
