i, for one, applaud this change. in my short forays into the morass that is the off-topic forums, i did notice that it was populated exclusively by fascists and anarachists. the only posts that were completely objective and level headed in the entire subforum were mine and i don't come here often enough to give it the credibility it so desperately needs. good riddance!

This isn't a small change. The Off-topic Forum is one of the most used forums on dakka. In fact, I have the Off-topic forum number two below my chain-fiction posts.
Of course there is annoying spam and that spam is most of the off-topic forum. More mature members will generally have less spam in their off-topic history, including news things, and other mature-like news things.
THEREFORE,
if the off-topic forum was destroyed and put into smaller forums (e.i. World news forum) then dakka would not be completely destroyed form lack of use.
Another problem-fixer would be to ban stupid stuff, such as my Hobbit orange thread.
If the Off-topic forum was gone, Dakka would face a shortage of posts, and the death of well-known users.
