if the off-topic forum was destroyed and put into smaller forums (e.i. World news forum) then dakka would not be completely destroyed form lack of use.

If the Off-topic forum was gone, Dakka would face a shortage of posts, and the death of well-known users.

I almost once posted a "cyber hook-up" thread. I had three different substances in me at the time and even then realized what a horrible idea that would be Alas, only select forum crowds get to experience my loving touch.

This thread is now pointless. As a polite reminder, we'll be hitting OT threads with the mod warning system a bit more in the near future to help cut down on the crap. The april fools joke was born out of the continued discussion to get rid of the OT board and it has been interesting to see just how much support there is for that amongst the userbase too.

Offtopic discussion is the purpose of this forum, not threads bragging about relatively dull events in individual lives 'wow I got new shoes', 'technique for eating an orange', 'I just got a driving license', etc. If you see these kinds of posts, use the mod alert button and type 'banal thread' in the alert box. They will get locked, the thread starters and some repliers will be punished and the quality of the OT forum will increase for all. Random noise is not discussion and there are plenty of other sites on the net for that.

Most of the threads here are good enough though so OT gets to stick around. Help make it better though
