I got a third servitor for my savant/scribe's personal retinue. He's probably my favorite of the three.

And another EBay find that I am indescribably happy about...

I went to a warlord games con in okc, got some cool stuff in the swag bag (some doctor who minis and some wwI figures) and stumbled across a cool game called counterblast (which I picked up a mini from, I'll post a pic), I also of course found someone selling some 40k minis and picked up some orks for next to nothing, I think I may have enough for a skirmish game or I may just use them for dioramas...

In any case, I picked my three favorites and did some simple conversions.

Camkierhi wrote:So you finally bought some proper models!

Proper indeed. They are going to be fun. I looked through the recently acquired ork models and bits more closely and I have enough for about 23 different minis.
I told my wife I need to go buy some green paint and she looked at me like I was crazy, so I then had to explain that the twelve or so shades of green I already have aren't quite right for ork skin

Here are the minis I got in the swag bag from the local Warlord Games Con

Some Daleks and Cybermen from the new Doctor Who game Exterminate! (http://www.warlordgames.com/new-exterminate/)

And some WWI minis, a doughboy and General of the Armies, John "Black Jack" Pershing.

And here's the Counterblast mini I picked up at the convention

I loved all of the minis from this game and had a really hard time choosing one. You can check out some more of them at http://store.bombshellminis.com/counterblast/

I also wanted to spend my every last dollar on minis from this game, Arena Rex (https://arenarex.com/)

Nice first piece man! Planning a board in this style? It's kinda WW 1 ish

Yes, I'm planning at least three more pieces in this style. As you guessed, I am going for a sort of ww1 mud hell, bombed out feel for the majority of the field but there will be at least one tile with a fair amount of greenery and I'm going to attempt some varied, unique stuff on each piece.

Well that is a great start bud, really nice natural feel to it, good tones, though could go a bit more scorched in the craters. Grass is looking brilliant, nice little touches.

To add to it, maybe some small tufts of longer grass, but certainly not necessary. You will possibly save for further build, but a tree stump might go well.

Brilliant work bud, you want to enter the next round of the LoER comp. Always lots of hints and tips there.

Thanks cam, giving the craters a more scorched appearance is a great idea. So is a tree stump, I'm going to look into options for how to do one. I'll definitely join in on the next round of LoER.

Nottingham (yay!)

Good touch excavating the craters a bit. I'd recommend getting a bag of gravel and scattering a few rocks on the texture medium when still wet - and give them a brush with PVA before painting.

I grabbed a few more things for terrain projects today...

and I also came across a few items I wanted to ask you guys about. First of all I am looking for some foam cutting/burning/shaping tools and would love some suggestions. I came across this and wondered if it might work for some applications...

I also came across this stuff today and wanted to know if you guys had any experience with it. Seems like it might work great for blood/slime stringing effects...

Thanks for all your feedback!!

Oooh exciting! like the boards, you've got the knack right off the bat! only thing I can suggest which was mentioned earlier is some different size rocky rubble and maybe some muddy water effects but that's probably because my head is all about the water effect at the moment lol!

Not where I should be

Great little haul of materials.

On heat tools:

I have this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOT-WIRE-CUTTER-FOR-MODEL-MAKING-CRAFTS-DEPRON-EPP-POLYSTYRENE-NEW-/132205816079?hash=item1ec814a90f:g:dpoAAOSwnDZT33o5

And a normal cheap soldering iron, which I modified the tip on, the one you have shown is a little pricey because they are labelling it "craft" and you are getting a bunch of tips you may or may not find useful.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60W-60-WATT-ELECTRIC-SOLDERING-SOLDER-IRON-c-w-FLAT-CHISEL-TYPE-TIP-STAND/361190790366?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D43782%26meid%3D67969ab5d7124cd490f160a7cea9597b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D151217227129

I also have one similar to this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Butane-Gas-Micro-Blow-Torch-Lighter-Welding-Soldering-Brazing-Refillable-Tool-UK-/112235824629?hash=item1a21c6c5f5:glsAAOSwnHZYT9U0

Hope that helps, it is not exhaustive and there are are many alternatives out there. Others may have some better options.

Thanks cam, I definitely want one of those cutting tables and I have one of those torches actually, though I've yet to try it out. Good to know about the soldering iron.

Also, I've prepped some trees and vines!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words.

I added a bit more "wet" mud, tried for a scorched look in the craters, and added a small (limb-stripped, likely dead) tree to my first board. I carved a sort of beveled edge on this first piece, which I think looks nice but of course I have since realized that this will make for a very poor fit with the other battlefield boards. So, I guess this one will just be a first go/display board.
