Yeah...It's not even that i want uplifting exactly. What I like are lively and strange stories filled with strange creatures, and 40k is a deliberately oppressive setting where it's hard for those kinds of stories to take place. I mean, this blog alone should show that my heart lies more with the silly and the lighthearted. Maybe I was a bit to harsh before, it's not that 40k is bad exactly, it's just not for me. And there's one other very big thing: I don't really want to tell stories in a setting where genocide is the norm.

It's part of why things like blackstone fortress are more appealing to me, these stories that take place in the wilds of the galaxy where the imperium is barely a thing. But when it comes down to it, I'd rather have a setting without any imperium at all. So like i said, maybe in the end 40k is just not for me. Which leaves me trying to figure out where to go next.

I do have some infinity figures, but I'm not sure i like the pinup-esque style they use some time. Still, here's a couple of them with some lively and strange plants!

Next.... Something new? I do not know yet.

You could explore Age of Sigmar, lots of nifty units (some with pets!) in there.

Non-GW, I'd suggest something like Relic Knights and/or Bushido.

I’ve always quite liked the brutality of the Imperium. To me it’s sadly closer to our nature than say Star Trek. I too though am liking the other aspects of the universe and looking forward to getting stuck in to BSF.

I’m not sure of other gaming systems, briancj most certainly knows more about that than me! Others in the 40k setting seem less inclined to commit genocide. I can’t profess to know their fluff very well but Eldar and Tau seem more amenable to me. Perhaps some exodites will have pets, I’ve mostly seen them with reptilians though. Tau and their “greater good” clearly has to be said in a Wes country accent thanks to Hot Fuzz, so could easily link to having swans... that’s not too tenuous right?

I do have some AoS stuff, i actually love the gryph hounds, especially the tiny one from silver tower. Don't know much about Relic knights or bushido, but i'm always willing to try new things.

I don't really agree about that, though i don't think star trek is either. For me if I had to choose a science fiction writer who got things closest i'd go for Ursula Le Guin, but I might be biased there because she's one of my favorite authors period.

I have sometimes considered trying the tau, and i've even picked up some figures here and there... but for some reason i found the basic infantry just a pain to put together? There's nothing horrible about them, i just found them to be a slog. Kroot are fun, and i keep thinking it might be nice to make something with them...

But until then! How about some heresy? How about a quickly kit-bashed alienish guy who somehow got ahold of space marine gear?

Like everything i do he needs a lot of work but getting the idea down is the most fun part for me. Maybe this is what i need to do, just do what i want and make aliens, mutants and other such strays. i like 'em.

amazingturtles,

While I like the grim dark of the 40K universe...in the earlier editions there was always strange and bizarre things from Rogue Trader and in White Dwarf that were funny or comical. Like issue 105 when they introduced the first Land Raider model, they immediately did a story about the Harlequin's nabbing one and throwing on a garish paint job and adding tassels and ribbons. Driving the Space Marines who saw it nuts.

Now you can always just do what you like with your 40K figures...paint them, sell them, etc. My warning is that if you sell them, if you get excited again it costs even more now to get them back. Perhaps focus on some of the smaller games like Necromunda or Kill Team rather than collect large armies. Then you can individualize your models more and paint at a slower and free pace that suits you.

Hope that helps,

CB

Who cares about the official fluff and models when you can kitbash a sweet rat-minotaur mutant alien! When your that big and heretical you probably don’t even ask the space marine to borrow his gear!

I'm definitely not planning on selling any of the ones with pets! Or the ones i've kibashed. I have been looking at trying a little more with kill team,

Right! Here's another one, just for that.

These guys have actually been pretty fun to put together, whatever i might end up using them for aside.

Yes please!

I have been waiting for more hope to see more of you in action soon turtles!

I love the alien kitbash - can you tell me what parts went into it?

I feel you on the positive/engaging/fun storytelling side of things. I've lately thought about running a side-campaign with my DnD group that takes place in a sci fi world inspired by my favourite parts of 40k/star wars/dune/blade runner so I get to build & use some badass sci fi minis in a world that I get to shape however I like.

Given it's been 6 months since we had our last "weekly" game, though...

Hello little animal friends, I hope you find a nice home with your marine pals! Reaper minis make some nice animals too if you are looking for more, and if you get the Bones/soft plastic ones they are super cheap as well. I have bought a couple of familiar packs from them for use in DnD. There are some flavourful ones around like octopi and meerkats that might be up your alley.

Yeah, they do need work in that area and a couple of others. Sadly I'm not getting much done, i've been sick for... two months, on and off? And now i have mild pleurisy which is one of those fun medieval sounding things but it's getting treated and i've been told should clear up with only mild treatment. Such fun!

So, once again trying to get back into the game (figuratively and literally) Here is some manner of alien cow beast!

What manner of beast and so on.

The next goal i have is to try out the wargaming bingo card which was shared around here (i feel bad, I feel like it was one of you who comment here who shared it but i can't remember who exactly)

This thing:

Spoiler:

I figure this will help me with... motivation!

Aslo, I'm probably just going to post everything from it here, whether it's space marine or sci fi or whatever.

Also, you have my sympathies regarding health kicking hobby time out the window.

It's an HO scale cow! I have this vague future dream about making a train layout with all strangely out of place critters.

Scenery is a major weakness of mine and it's a bit off putting to me too, but i'm trying to see it as a way to work on something i'm not good at? At least that's the idea

Feel free to steal it, i did too! thank you for the sympathy.

here is my first entry though! "paint a model from an army or faction you don't own any painted figures for" well, i didn't have any warcry stuff until just recently, so here is one!

A bit rough, but i was trying to get the scheme down

Well, not on the subject of the bingo thing, but i bought something today, something i've wanted for quite a while in one form or another

Spoiler:

I don't know if i;ll ever get anymore, but still. i've already come up with a backstory, they're the order of the bad neighbor* and they drink tea and are irritable ladies who like to annoy the authorities. canon? i care not an ounce for canon. i may need to figure out a way to make at least one of them actually have a cup of tea though,

The one pulling the grenade pin with her teeth looks to be your most likely candidate for a cup of tea in that grenade hand. Also the cherub with the swingy incense ball could have a large cast iron tea kettle too. Always on hand for a warming top up. And that reliquary should be the tea trolley filled with a full afternoon tea service, crumpets and cakes.

So you're saying you're going to need a Seth Rogen figure?

Nope! Far too recent and also known. The reference is to the classic Peanuts movie "Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown! (And Don't Come Back)" where Chuck and co stay at a place called "the chateau of the bad neighbor", something that has been stuck in my head ever since seeing the movie when i was like, 8.

Thanks! I'm feeling pretty good about it right now, we'll see how i feel as the year goes on.

I've been looking but it's tricky! doll house size might be a bit too big, from what i can tell. I need tiny tea cups!

needs some filling in around the neck, i think, but i think it came out pretty good. I'm not sure what to use him for, since lizard eldar aren't really a thing... But i think this counts for the convert a model space on the bingo thing! I'm counting it anyhow. so that is two down!

Lizard Eldar and the Iron Golems look great. The helmet of the Chaos Dwarf Golem doesn’t look big enough for his beard ringlets though.

The quick look I did for tea sets mainly found doll house ones, still they might be useful as religious iconography? All hail the Tea Emperor!

in interesting news, a friend of mine sent me a doll house tea set! it was very kind of her and the scale... doesn't really match.

In the Grim Darkness of the far future there is only... oversized tea cups! I agree with ChaoticMind that the teapot has to be the Standard Icon. Maybe the cups could be shields? Unless the set came with saucers, then they have to be the shields! They could also be made in to holy relics to fight over! Can you tell how much I’m loving this idea by the rambling ideas?!? Keep the magic coming turtles!
