Post your hard learned lessons here, share your years of experience from folly and lessons of trial and error.
For example...
General
Try not to fall back when you are near the edge of the board, especially when given a choice (SM: Combat Tactics)
Never deep strike into table corners.
Eldar
I learned that it is a bad idea to field Wraithguard as a troops choice... and wraithguard at all against a chaos demon army, especially if they have flamers of tzeentch.
I also learned that you get more bang for your buck from war walkers than vypers.
Harlequins are great in close combat on the assault, but fail afterwards... assuming you can even get them into close combat.
Farseer > Autarch power....... Farseer < Autarch points
Guardian jetbikes are fast and can shoot ok, but are likely to fail miserably in close combat and other leadership situations.

The biggest lesson I've learned is:
Make your opponent roll enough dice, and he WILL fail.
Unfortunately, it's usually me on the receiving end.

You can't fire heavy weapons after moving.
I knew this, but sometimes you need to be TAUGHT somethign you know, know what I mean?
I learned this after dropping my shooty inquisitor off next to a squad of guardsmen. None of them survived to fire their heavy weapons.

Never rely compleatly on one squad to either win a combat or kill that last unit.
Never roll one dice when you can roll many.
You can never have to many bodies
Always be prepared to go with the scenario rather than the rules.
And most importantly have fun

WHAT!? You don't think fire dragons are good? Really? I can see a single squad of them losing out to a squad of russ's but seriously if played right they can be down right nasty.

Make something good re-rollable whenever possible. To-wound, to-hit, it doesn't matter. It all works.
Lucius sucks. I cannot reiterate this enough.
|
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Quantity may have a quality all of its own, but when the quality of units you have a quantity of is significantly lower than what you are facing, be prepared to watch 100 boyz get eaten by a single squad of striking scorpions lead by eldrad.
In an army, you need variety if you are going to take on all comers.

Never underestimate anything, even the most humble guardsman or guardian. They can always roll 6s.
Space Wolf Rhinos suck. (Only thing aside from ven dreads we don't have that says *See Codex: Space Marines* instead of their own entry, they cost 50 points and you even have to buy the pintle stormbolter and smoke launchers)
If you have to use two hands to roll all the dice when you assault, something is going to die.
Losing may suck, but being a poor sport about it sucks worse. Play like a gentlemen or gentlewoman, and you'll always have an opponent for a fun game.

Assault Marines will always bring the pain to any Tau or Imperial Guard infantry.

The game has objectives to win and killing your enemy is the most important one only 1/3 of the time.
Many models can stop you from losing, but only troops let you win any game.

using 3 squads of plague marienes in a 1000 point game isnt a very smart idea caqnt do much dmg

Don't worry about whether the unit is good or not; or whether it's going to "get it's points back". Rather focus on what it adds to your strategy and how it fits into the tactics your plan employs.

Eldar: The problem with Dire Avengers + farseer in a Wave Serpent is that whilst you can cast guide on the Avengers, casting Doom on the target Squad is pretty difficult as the Wave Serpent has no damn fire points. Consider replacing Doom with Storm.
Reapers are deceptively powerful, most opponents leave them unopposed for far to long
