In followup to this poll/thread:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/235563.page
The current way we handle sigs is to have a 150 pixel verbal limit, and in some web browsers there is a feature that will crop signatures over 150 pixels automatically, but does not require space to be allocated for signatures smaller than that. However, this does not work in all browsers so we end up with a bit of a mismatch of signatures that look different and impair mods ability to manage them somewhat.
To fix the web browser issue in this fashion, you need to have a fixed space allocated to signatures. Having a fixed space of 150 pixels for all signatures is too much space to take up, especially if people are using large images. The 'option 6' in the linked thread is a bit too restrictive in terms of width based on responses to that thread, but the height is ok. As a result, the next release of dakka (coming in the next week) will lock signatures down to a fixed 100 pixel space in all browsers. This will greatly reduce the effort moderators have to put in to getting people to sort out their signatures, freeing them up for more useful moderation duties.
What this means for those of you with large signatures or signature images is that you should cut it down to 100 pixels high. Once the changes go live, anything over 100 pixels will be automatically cropped so you dont have to make changes, but your sig look a bit odd. If your sig is already less than 100 pixels high, which is the vast majority of dakka, then you dont have to worry about a thing.
Apologies to those of you who have made special images that are 150 pixels tall. I hate having to do this sort of thing but it will improve the quality of the forum over the long term so er... take one for the team.
There are a few other nice tweaks and features coming in the next week as well, which I might as well cover here instead of starting a new thread after releasing them. The release will go up some time in the next few days, most likely around the 21st or so. It will see an end to double posts - if you double post, or reply to yourself then your message will be automatically appended to your previous message. This will allow people to edit out their own double posts and will save a lot of moderator time. It will also put an end to a lot of the +1 post threads that crop up from time to time. There are a whole bunch of rules in place to make this useful and not annoying, so most people will never notice it, only when you try and bump threads, reply to yourself or double post within a 24 hour period will it be noticeable. A warning also come up if you try to do any 'in b4 lock' type posts to remind people that we dont allow that. There will be a couple of bug fixes, including that annoying rare one where posts are not shown after replying to a thread (hopefully - might happen one more time after this release but I have tracked it down to one of two lines of code).
The most interesting other feature is that under your avatar, it will soon indicate the number of times you have voted in the gallery, hopefully inspiring people to check things out there and vote a bit more. Most people will have very low vote counts at the moment, so it will be easy to become one of the top scoring users if that sort of ranking interests you.

Only if it was within 24 hours of your initial post and nobody else had replied, and you had not added an attachment to the new post. Like I said, the vast majority of users will never be affected by that feature, but it will stop mods from having to deal with almost all accidental double posts.

I don't think it's necessary to be honest. There are only a few users here who like having painfully obvious and large pictures in their sigs.

How will "posting in your own thread" be handled in the Swap Shop and P&M Log areas?
Those are two where it might be "OK" to do so without it automatically being added to your last message?

If it has been more than 24 hours it wont merge the posts (swap shop), less than that and it prevents you bumping the post repeatedly through the day. The P&M log areas will not append a second message to the first if the first message is already large, or the second message has an attachment. It is designed to be quite fluid (more so than the vbulletin implementation of the same feature) but if there is any major problem it can always be tweaked easily.

I always considered big signatures to be a bit redundant in modern forums anyway. Well, that and a bit narcissistic.
All you'd really need is the avatar image to the left, the tag under your forum name. Maybe a little text in your actual sig for a quote, or maybe, *gasp* an actual signature.
But honestly, a sig goes in every message you post, and to be frank, people don't need to see the same stuff being posed with every single message you post.
Signatures are more an email/mail in general sort of thing. They're not often read one after another and there's usually a delay with them, thus signatures help people stay on top of just who they're conversing with.
With forums, especially big forums, messages are stacked top to bottom and with other automatically generated info.

Also, please can we have some kind of control on how often you can change your avatar/signature? It's very frustrating when certain members *coughlunahoundcough* change their avatar and signature every few days. It's good to be able to instantly recognise someone by glancing at their post and it's really quite irritating anyway.

Personally, I think this is 100% totally unnecessary and rather lame. 100 pixel height is borderline useless. That's a good height/width for an avatar, not a sig image.
Out of all the forums I own, moderate, lurk, and post on (which is a lot), this is the most anally retentive and overly-sensitive one in regards to sigs and sig images (not to mention threadomancy, but that's a whole other rant).
I boggles my mind that a community that is SOOOO consumed with such a creative modeling and painting hobby would be annoyed or irritated by creativity in a digital medium.
I just don't get all the sig hate.
I love all the text quotes. I love to read what people think is funny and I often get to read funny things I missed in the forums. I love to see the release of the creativity in Luna's oft-changed sigs. I love looking at people's Dakka Code. Sure, when somebody tries to add a sig image that's 800x1250 pixels, it blows goat but, honestly, when has that ever happened?
200x600 is a perfect size for sig images. It is still a manageable size on an 800x600 res monitor. It won't resize anyone's browsers unless they are still using that 13" Sun CRT with 640x480 monitor. If that's the case, they should go jump on a sharp stake anyway.
Intentionally or not, this quote is basically how I see this forced sig change.
grizgrin wrote:A little controling, are we? Lord almighty, you just wont be happy until everyone is straightjacketed into "enjoying" Dakka the same EXACT way you see it, will you?
Why not just add an option in the user's profile that allows you to toggle sigs on or off? That way, if 'Joey Nofunguy' doesn't want to hit that scroll wheel ONE extra time to get to the bottom of the thread he hasn't read before posting his reply, he can turn sigs off in his CP. However, King Ghidorah (who is a creative dude that loves creativity) can still get full enjoyment out of the members of this varied bunch. You know, the people's creativity here isn't JUST limited to painting or conversions. It's just wargames minis that we talk about and showcase.

I get where your coming from, but if I can explain a little bit of where a lot of us come from, it might help. I don't care much anymore now that I've learned how to just block images, but the very nature of the creativity of this board means that many of us are here for the content, not the trappings. Yes, some threads become a bit of a coffee klatch, but most threads are pretty OT. A lot of use started talking about 40k on usenet, and images of any sort are creepy to us.

This isn't exactly censorship. It's not censorship for a person that hosts a party to ask guest not to use a megaphone to say good bye at the end of every conversation. You can sort of call it a stifling of free expression, but really, it's a pretty petty restriction on a tertiary aspect of the forum.
I mean, I get what you're saying, but I think of it less as a stifling of speech (since it's not content based, but format based) and think of it more like having a dress code: it makes everything a little classier.
