There have been a few discussions about alternative games to 40k recently following the usual price rise unrest. I thought it might be interesting to see if anyone gets even close to 40k amongst the Dakka crowd?

I've allowed multiple answers, so people can put down more than one option if they wish.

I've tried to cover as many popular (and not so popular) games as I can think of, but of course this list is in no way comprehensive (particularly concerning historical games), so feel free to mention anything that makes you tick the "other" box. Apologies if I've overlooked your personal favourite game!

And I have left the definition of "Favourite" open. I'm not bothered how active a player you are, more what your preferences are at the moment.

Signal Close Action (Napoleonic Naval)
General Quarters (WW1 and 2 Naval)
Marechal de l'Empire (Corps level Napoleonic)

I should be surprised if one other user of the site had ever played any of these.

Woohoo, glad that Aeronautica Imperialis is on the list. Other than that, plain old 40k and soon maybe a new campaigning season of Mordheim.

Well, we know. But it might be interesting to see by how much. And in any case, it may be that as there is the option to tick >1 game, it may not have quite such a commanding lead.

In any case, this isn't a warhammer forum per se. Yak has been keen to promote it as a forum for any wargame. Although I am aware that 40k has the largest posting contingent.

And also, I apologise for any Impetus players - I seem to have listed their game twice! Sorry! My bad!

Cheers

Just me for Anima Tactics? It's an awesome skirmish game. Granted it's incomplete, but it's still awesome.

Warhammer Fantasy for me, on account I've not played any other game in at least 3 or 4 years!

Though looking at an IG army for 40k, and with the new Gaming Club, I dare say there will be others tempting me before long. Just not PP. Not my bag, my style, or my taste I'm afraid.

Gota plug WFB here, I havent played 40k in months and i'm not sure I want to for a very long time. I don't know lately I just derive no enjoyment from the game anymore.

I am interested to see what other people go for in regards to non GW games, I am looking to get into something new so i'm going to be watching this thread closely.

Dakka isn't a Warhammer forum. It's a wargaming forum that has a lot of Warhammer players.

Kilkrazy, I've heard of General Quarters, but haven't played it. Does that count?

My current favorites were all on the list - Flames of War, Hordes, Battlefleet: Gothic, and Battletech. I probably should have ticked Urban War too, just to give it some lovin'. I haven't actually played yet, but I have the rules and enough minis for three different warbands (Viridians, Triad, and Gladiators - thanks for those Black Friday sales Neil!). Some of the Urban War minis are absolutely great I think.

However there's one I want to try that didn't make it on the list: Rocket's Red Glare. It's a War of 1812 ruleset.

Although my group also has a 30's themed pulp Cthulu game we run.

Battletech, first and always.

Although the "Any Editions" thing is really a misnomer. Most "editions haven't changed much. The latest version, Total Warfare, has the most changes, and it probably isn't more than 5 pages of different rules and more equipment.

The current edition of General Quarters is a bit expensive to try out on a whim. The original GQ1 and 2 are still available for about £4 each from NavWar and are good little games.

What scale is it, Kilkrazy? Or are there multiple scales? About how many ships do you need per side for a decent sized battle?

Heh... these days, I'm pretty much exclusively playing Star Wars, Axis & Allies: War at Sea and Heroquest.

I would be playing 40K, but the group I used to game with have all thrown it in, and keep getting busy when the 'local' club meets.

@jgemrich: That's the 1/600 scale Man O War knockoff, right?

I tried it but wasn't impressed to the point of wanting to buy.

Note: I already have BFG to satisfy any naval desires, plus our group has plenty of BFG ready to play.

US players usually play with 1:2400 GHQ models while British use 1:3000 NavWar models.

The range of naval guns is huge, so you need small models and lots of space. The scale in the game is reduced otherwise you would be shooting six or seven yards across the table.

A fun cruiser battle can be fought with maybe five ships a side. I have hired a church hall and fought huge battles with dozens of ships a side.

Yep.

Did you play with the card decks? I find the game is a little bland without these. I'm not saying the game is the be all end all.... but I have a great time playing it. Dirt cheap to get into ($20 for a dwarf starter and you can get most of the rules online. The book is almost outta date w/ some rule updates, point updates and stat updates.

Nah, we didn't get into the card decks. I agree that the starting price is good, and that they should have done some playtesting before release... (what? who does that?!?)

If I didn't already have loads of BFG (and Pirates CSG), I'd be a lot more interested in U.Seas. But one of our group has it, so I'm sure we'll give it another go sooner or later.

I didn't see it on the list but I remember playing a mini's game called Warzone a while ago. I still have some of the models which I'm using in my Guard Army. Is that still around? I know they made a movie not too long ago involving that universe (Mutant Chronicles). Tom Jane, Ron Perlman, and John Malkovich are all in it. I was surprised.

Also, secondary post:

I saw Battletech. I used to play the card game YEARS and years ago. I remember there was some form of a board game of it out also before the card game. Did they update to different editions and stuff of that with minis or still just a card game? Also, who publishes it as FASA went out of business.

It was a board game WELL before it was a card game. The CCG died many years ago. The board version is till kicking, now in it's 25th year.

The current publishing set up:

Topps owns the rights to Battletech.
Catalyst Game Labs licenses those rights to produce the game.
Iron Wind Metals has licensed the rights to produce the miniatures.

Field of Glory - I was not into historical rules much until this set. Great game

Flames of War - 40k without the wonkyness, just have to make sure both sides use the same period of the war.

Mostly into boardgames now. 6 player deathmatch of Doom from FFG is awesome, especially using the "Hail to the King, baby" mod.
