After some long hours of work I wanted to show Dakka Dakka a trench system that me and my Father are making for our home games and for our hobby club, it's still a work in progress, but we've got the main structure built, the putty is on, and the wooden trench interior is complete.

Looks like an awesome start. I've always thought the trench warfare theme made for awesome modeling.

It's going to be regular, or planet strike if need be. I'll be posting the painted version tomorrow, and if I have enough time, with Sandbags too

just keep in mind that trench systems are very rarely straight stretches, they are far more often in a zig-zag pattern to avoid the whole defence line being under immediate threat should the enemy reach into a trench. And also that several gun emplacements and smaller 1-2 person bunkers would be located here and there, above trench level, to help defend the reenches themselves.

I'm keeping this advice in mind. I decided to make the line straight for the only reason that they are curvy. Trench systems are miles long, and this is only about 100 yards of Trench.

I did some work on it today, and here is the trench with the wood inked and the trench with a base coat. Sadly it still has so much work to be done.

This is really cool man! To be honest, of all historic warfare, the Great War has always fascinated me the most; the pointlessness of it all is baffling, unthinking exchanges of men and munitions for little/no gain, the way those in charge distanced themselves so entirely from the men they ordered to almost certain death, and the courage of the young men ordered out into the wasteland of Western Europe. (Plus Im Canadian, and Arthur Currie really was a brilliant tactician. Often the accomplishments of The Canadian Expeditionary force are eclipsed/encompased by the British, but nobody could F ck s it up like us; I believe the Canadians were refered to as "Stormtroopers")

Ive often thought of making 3 boards (yea right, I havent got time to build one, but I digress): One for each armies entrenchement, and one for no-mans land. Some films you might like to watch: Paths Of Glory, All Quiet On The Western Front
For inspiration. (Plus they're badass)

Cheers

Malnourished, I will definitely check out those movies, I've never been able to find good Trench Warfare movies anyway.

Anyway, I'm still not done with it, I still have Razor Wire to put up and so much more.

Wow I myself am making a trench board and I am surprised by how different ours look. Mine has two trenches, one on either side. Neither have wood, look like they're muddied and have no sand bags on top of the parapet. Maybe I'll post some of my own pics to show just how different the idea of how a trench boards should look like can be.

damn. That's very large. I've always wanted to try something like that, but I'm too lazy to ever follow through. I haven't even looked into getting a game board yet.

... because that totally makes sense.

I love the concept and it really goes well with the Krieg. It's obvious that you put a great deal of work into this. It's looking quite nice thus far. There are a couple of criticisms that just don't quite make it come together for me, though.

1) Your trenches are SO straight and orderly. Look at WWI pics and you'll see that trenches as long as these were nowhere near as parallel and uniform.

2) The back walls of your trenches (not the wood-covered edges) are too smooth and straight. Where the walls meet the ground and the corners are basically right angles and the wall's surfaces are smooth like some Engineers took a putty knife and sandpaper to make them all slick and even.

A great example would be in this pic:
Avrik_Shasla wrote:

Look at the corner behind the second guy in the middle trench. If you look at the heavy team, to the guy in front of them, then up one guy, then directly behind him. Not sure what they used to dig those trenches, but a standard entrenching tool won't get you that precise.

Aside from those two niggling things, though, it is some good work. Honorable mention for your tenacity with all those sandbags.
