The black stuff is set to send a fan into the final frontier as Ireland's iconic stout marks its 250th year.

Guinness has announced three once-in-a-lifetime experiences, as part of its celebration.

The brewery is sending someone into space, another to the depths of the ocean and a personal performance from The Black Eyed Peas.

The space experience gives one person the chance to become one of the first non-professional astronauts to venture into space with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, the world's first commercial spaceline.

After training in New Mexico at the Virgin Galactic's home at Spaceport America, the winner will take a flight through the Earth's atmosphere at almost 2500mph - three times the speed of sound.

The winner of the sea experience will travel to the Lofoten Islands in Norway with two friends where they will venture to the depths of the sea and plunge into the black stuff in a deep sea bar.

The final winner and two friends will get an exclusive live performance by The Black Eyed Peas at a recording studio as part of their forthcoming world tour.

Meanwhile, Guinness is also to mark the date with an advertising campaign entitled To Arthur, which pays tribute to Arthur Guinness on the 250th anniversary of the signing of a 9,000 year lease on St James' Gate Brewery.

The ad, produced by Saatchi and Saatchi, centres on Arthur in 1759 and follows him as he travels around the world.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Are you some form of cybernetic being? Guinness is amazing.

I'm not really into the Black Eyed Peas, but damn, any one of those 3 things would be badass, if only to bring a couple of friends along for free beer and be able to tell people afterwords that you did it.

Going into space would be awesome, going into the ocean depths would be awesome, scary for me but awesome. Black Eyed Peas would be, meh.

And Guinness is ok, I like its more expensive variant extra stout I think it is.

Maybe Guinness is different in the USA to what we have in the UK and Ireland.

I don't like Guiness but I'd love to go into space.

But I wouldn't drink it to try and win it.

Black Eyed Peas peas are one of the few 'Urban' acts I really quite enjoy. But they seem a rather Bizarre choice for a Guiness promotion, are there no decent Irish bands these days?

I'm not much of a fan of Guinness, but I've been told by a lot of Guinness fans, including a few Irish ex-pats, that they've never really gotten the export stuff to taste the same.

Meanwhile, that's a really harsh competition to come third in. Fly through space, go to the bottom of the ocean... or the Black Eye Peas.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Agreed. If the beer doesn't chew like a piece of caramel, then its not putting hair on your chest. Oh beer wars.

If there were a beer war, I'd fight for both sides.

I was actually about to mention those two bands, except that they aren't Irish (Boston and Chicago, respectively).

You know who I would love to see live while drinking (free) Guinness? The freakin' POGUES. (Yes, I know that you can't understand a word Shane says anymore.)

By the way, if you can mistake it for piss, it isn't beer.

If your piss looks like Guinness... you're doing something wrong.

Forever alone

Why the Black Eyes Peas? Isn't the average Guinness drinker a middle-aged pot-bellied balding man alone in the pub?

At least, that's what I've seen firsthand.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Not in the US. In the US Guinness is the "I'm trying to be a badass by drinking dark beer" beer. It's a stout for people that don't really like stouts. It's actually quite popular with the college crowd.

The Great State of Texas

I’d like to point this fact out. Reference point-the syrup used to sweeten snow cones. If you don’t know what snow cones are, you live in a cooler climate than here.

*If you add cherry syrup to rum, you have an awesome drink.

*If you upturn the bottle of syrup and take a direct chug of it, when you regain your vision, you’ll find yourself several hundred yards from where you were and have an uncontrollable desire to see if you can run faster that that car that just passed by. Then you’ll want to lie down for awhile. Bees will be hovering nearby, saying “See. We toldya. Once you try nectar you never go back baby. BZZB.”
