Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is going to be released on July 15th (this wednesday). Any other Dakkaites going to be there for the premiere? I have a friend who's going to sleep outside the cinema so she can be first in line, but that's not my style. I'm really glad I booked online, because if Transformer's line stretched from the cinema to the mall (half a kilometer!), then what will this line be like?

My ribs hurt. Curse my filthy sense of humour!
I'm going to wear my Twilight-bashing shirt, just to mock the frenzied teenage girls who want New Moon to come out and stare with undisguised hate at the Harry Potter posters.

I've seen previews and I must say that the graphics have me interested. [I mean, who goes to the movies for 'plot-driven' movies.] I'm going to try and make it on Wed., but if it messes with my weekday routine, I won't get around to it until Saturday.

I like going to movies when there will be a big crowd, usually but since I'll be alone, I will probably wait. Don't want to be mistaken for a creepy middle-aged guy scoping out the kiddies.

I'm pretty sure all three of the main stars are 19 now, although my search-fu may be weakening.
And of course the game sucks, but who cares? It's a straight rip of the movie into game format, so naturally it's going to be bad.

Yes, they are about 19 and they are playing 16 year olds.
The last book is going to be split into two films so it will take 2-3 years to finish everything.
I think the age gap is acceptable given they wanted to use the same actors from the beginning, when the characters were 11, to the end.

Considering they normally use 20 somethings to play 16 year-olds I think it is just fine to have 19 play 16. My brother was a big fan of the books and my wife enjoyed the movies so we are all going to the midnight showing.

Can't stand Harry Potter myself. Not that they're written badly, just that the concept makes me want to either fall asleep or stab my eyes out, depending on how intolerant I'm feeling.
I think the series sort of screwed itself over from the beginning. The villain was killed by a baby with the power of love, at that point it's kind of hard to set him up as a legitimate threat.

The subtext is more interesting, though.
Voldemort's power derives partly from his ability to harness the selfish ambitions of other people and largely from the fact that the majority prefer to ignore the signs. "Evil will triumph because good men do nothing. " or whatever the quote it.

To be fair thought, the same can be said of pretty much every Hero/Villain novel ever written. It's generally accepted that the good will triumph over evil, with the good guy surviving. The interest comes in how this is achieved.
And don't forget, these are kids books. Whether great works of literature or not, J K Rowling achieved the seemingly impossible, and got an entire generation reading. That in itself is worthy of great respect.

It'd be awesome if it ended up that the bad guy Voldemort(?) kicked everyone's posterior. Now that would be different. When was the last time a comic level bad guy just stomped the team of good guys?
Voldemort
'You cannot defeat me!'
Potter
'I'm going to stop you!'
Bad guy step up behind him and caps him with a 9mm.
Voldemort
'guess not...'
Scene ends with Voldemort powering up his evil bad guy death ray, and laughing like Ming the Merciless. Excellent.
James Bond: Do you expect me to talk?
Auric Goldfinger: No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die.

I have never read nor seen any of the films but from reading the plot on wikipedia (of the whole series) it just reads like a predictable summer blockbuster film. i.e. All's well, gak happens, more gak building up to climax, big ol' battle, all's well again.

The magical KKK subtext is a little hamfisted at times, but turning a blind eye to an evil organization out of fear isn't a bad theme. It's more the execution that I'm not a fan of.
Mad Doc Grotsnik wrote:To be fair though, the same can be said of pretty much every Hero/Villain novel ever written. It's generally accepted that the good will triumph over evil, with the good guy surviving. The interest comes in how this is achieved.
The problem is that's usually the climax.
It doesn't usually start out with the hero killing the villain, and then having to kill him a second time, when he's weaker, but with it still inexplicably more difficult to do so. A lot of the drama is lost when the villain was already defeated by the hero.
And don't forget, these are kids books. Whether great works of literature or not, J K Rowling achieved the seemingly impossible, and got an entire generation reading. That in itself is worthy of great respect.
Well, I said myself they were written well. I think as children's books they're great; I just think when the series attempts to get more serious it finds itself chained to the children's book concepts it began with. When people in the setting eat Chocolate Mobblewomps and Bernie's Booger-Flavored Beans it's hard to take it seriously.

If you want a fantasy children's book with a bit more philosophical meat in it the 'His Dark Materials' series is pretty good.
Let's face it, though, a lot of supposedly adult literature is just anodyne crap with a bit of sex added.
