This was my first tournament in about 10 years. I ended up with 2 massacres and a major which got me first place. I'm pretty proud of my orks. They performed admirably. I won't be taking the same list to semis, though. I saw a ton of holes that, luckily, my opponents didn't figure out how to capitalize on. So what was your experience like? What did well at your FLGS?

I got the exact same thing as you with orks...weird. I didn't table my last opponent because it was the table quarter mission and he was back in the corner with IG stalling. It only lasted 3 turns.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)

I didn't table anyone. Game 1 was by far the toughest. He had 5 land raiders full of grey knights. I just couldn't pop the damn things. For most of the game the only thing my lootas had to shoot at was a vindicare assassin that I couldn't even roll high enough to reach most of the time. I managed to hold up his terminators on the opposite side of the board for most of the game. On the last turn I managed to pop one of his land raiders with a nob squad/warboss that was sitting on an objective. Luckily he assaulted them the next turn and I wiped them out.

Second game I was fighting a really slow necron player. We only made it to turn 3. Had we gone another turn I would have phased him out.

Third game was against marines. I probably would have tabled him but his command squad with Lysander didn't deep strike in until the end of turn 4. He wiped out a 30 man shoota boy squad that was sitting on one of the objectives on the far side of the table away from everything else. I knew it was coming and I figured that two turns of shooting from two loota squads would do enough damage that they could at least hang in there till the end of the game. 2 turns of rolling heavy 1 for both squads nixed that plan.

Funny that the 1st place person here was playing Orks too.... I think that says alot about the power of that codex compared to the other codexes out there.

I took 1st place here in a regional match last month, but did horribly in Ard Boyz, I just cant do 2500 points in 2.5 hour, especially with tons of Droppods and flanking, Ill haev to really consider if I want to play next year.

Good job guys.

Bit of a disservice to the winners is it not, suggesting their choice of army might have had more to do with it than their skill? The OP even said he spotted holes in his force, and his opponents failed to exploit them?

I dont think it is beyond the realm of possibility that Orks are quite a bit easier to win with requiring less skill than say winning with other armies like darkangels and their permutations as one example.

So I guess the Orks doing well kind of shows all the "Orks are 3rd tier" proponents that they don't know what they're talking about.

LOL Dark Angels can't win anything. Even the most competitive list out of that sorry shod of a 'dex looks like a wet noodle next to any of the T1 lists out there. Sorry DA lovers. I suggest modding the space marine codex to "counts as" a DA army for now. Just paint 'em green!

I have a sneaky suspicion that that has to do with the fact that some of the best armies out of 5th seem to have had all of their generals kidnapped...

I'll admit it. Orks are a top tier army. Most armies can beat them very handily with the right person in control, though. The biggest problem that I see is that most people are a bit short sighted and don't figure the objectives into their overall game plan. They're more dead set on killing than they are winning. Also, once their plans get frazzled they don't make adjustments. The objectives are just an afterthought that they try and rush to meet at the end of the game. I used to play like that. I've lost a lot of games that I could have won because I didn't see the big picture. Once I realized what was happening I started winning a lot more.

I didn't go because I didn't have enough points to play but two friends did.

My first friend went with a Nid army. He went 1-2.

My second friend went with Ultramarines, 2nd Company. He went 1-2.

The guy that won was also playing Ultramarines, 2nd Company. From the count I got from them, there were a total of 5 Marine players and 1 Ork player. I think the Ork player came in second.

I dont think its a disservice to notice that orks either placed 1st or in the top 3 for the most part when they were present.

It's pretty much common knowledge the the newest codexes are pretty much powerhouses compared to the older ones, its how GW makes the hobbyiest buy the newest and greatest minis.

Oh yeah, IG came in third and the 1st place winner was a Marine player that cheated with his army list and the judges failed to catch it before he took the prize and left...

Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that many TOs ruled that Deffrollas work on vehicles this year. When everyone is bringing mech and you can take cheap upgrades that makes killing every vehicle in the game completely trivial it gives you a fairly large edge.

EDIT: Also, the first round is fairly meaningless. The store I went to only had 3 participants, including myself. Needless to say, we're all going through to the semi-finals.

Like when adepticon submited that ruling gw took it out. All major tournaments are ruling the same why fight it anymore its over.

Who played the Eldar, Steve? Was it one of the James?

I played a Kor'Sarro Khan list with 4 8-man bike squads, 3 Vindicators, a shooty terminator squad, an assault terminator squad and two dedicated transport LRs (one a LRC).

I massacred a mechanized Eldar player, tied with a tough as nails Imperial Fists army (I was cursing my outflank rolls on that one), and massacred a mechanized Chaos Space Marine list. Definitely an eye-opener as to the effectiveness of a White Scars list, and it was a blast to play. However, it's never being pulled out for anything but tournaments, as it's just too cheesy for friendly games. The Chaos player was one of my good friends, and at the end of the game he said "Shaun, I always have fun playing with you, but playing against that list sucks."

There were 3 DE lists, which was quite surprising. One of the players fought the 9 Obliterators list to a complete tie, which was the only reason I walked away with first. Great play by everyone there. The quality of play at the qualifier was crazy. At the end of 2 rounds, there were 9 players over 32 points, out of 22. The top three was over a spread from 58 to 54, and there was a tie for third and fourth. It was that close. Crazy. All the players that came were great sports, and we didn't have any gits come, even with the intense nature of 'Ard Boyz. Overall, a great day of gaming.

I got first with my modified gunline IG. First game was vs 3 lith necrons (24pts), Second was shooty Nidzilla (23pts) and third was horde nidzilla (22pts). Total of 69pts. Lots of variety. Only one ork player and one IG player. My opponets were so fun to play I thought it might have been a competition of sportsman ship not generalship. Wish all tournaments had players like that. Good luck to all advancing. Surprised to see so few guard actually advancing. Seems like orks are still living the dream.

Who's complaining? I simply stated that many TOs ruled in favor of deffrollas working on vehicles and therefore it's no surprise to see lots of mechanized Orks going to round 2.

Furthermore, I personally agree deffrollas work on vehicles by the letter of the rules. I don't think it's intended, but that's how it is written so that's how I would play it. But Adepticon's house rules are entirely irrelevant to GW's rules, nevermind the rulings individual TO's at local 'Ard Boyz events decide to go with. If you ask around you'll find that some allowed it and some did not.

An interesting thing about the Adepticon house rules is that the guys in charge of Adepticon originally decided that Deff Rollas could be used to ram vehicles, and they changed their opinion to match the ruling that John Spencer, a GW customer service agent, handed down stating that Deff Rollas could not be used to ram vehicles.

Oh, the 1st Place marine player was using a Multimelta on his Landraider to kill tons of tanks, he never payed for the Multimelta..... it was a severe game winner in one of his games.

I know we are supposed to look at the opponents list, but for the most part people assume that their opponents are honest or now the rules.

Gratz on advancing to the next round! You gonna attend semi-finals?

The Eldar player wasn't one of the James', it was actually a player from salt lake, as was the IG player. They were both great players and the Eldar guy got massacres plus near full bonus points in each round. I guess they were both buddies of the infamous Stelek but they were great players and added to the tournament alot.

Really? Cheating in this round? When 3 people get to go?

What a tool.

Serioulsy, I think most organizers should have put a little time into just checking the armies. I saw people with cardboard pods (not painted) and a freaking pipe fitter for another called "DA Drop" painted on top.

Now if one of these people won, are they seriously going to the regional with that trash?

What's wrong with cardboard proxies if they are of the correct dimensions? It's a tournament, not a hobby convention.
