I'm gonna start playing Warhammer. But I dunno either fantasy or 40k I'll be interested in.
I have selected Vampire Counts or Space Marines, they are very cool.
But I dunno which one is more funny in battle and cheap in price.
Plz give me some opinions, thank you.

Welcome to the hobby The question you have to ask is whether you want to be an undead lord or a commander of superhuman warriors in the distant future ;p Space marines are a good choice and one of the cheaper armies to collect. Also fairly easy to paint, depending on what chapter you choose. Quite forgiving to play, too, compared to other races. I can't offer any opinions on WHFB, though, cus i don't play it :S Sirius42 wrote:Both is where the sensible money is. Eh?

I have selected Vampire Counts
Play Vampires. There are loads of great lists out there, so you'll be winning games in no time.

WHFB: More complicated, Though still great fun. Tactics often focus on maneuvering.
WH40k: Less Complicated, Smooth Flowing. Tactics often involve combo units. (I.E. Lash+Oblits)
I'd vote for Fantasy, only because I love the game so much.

I agree with John here.
Not only that but they have some really nice models, some good lists (as said before), and an army that not everyone uses (whereas THOUSANDS of people play Spacemarines).
I hope you enjoy playing Warhammer
PS, Welcome to dakka.

if you want to play a game based on intellect, precision, and maneuvering play fantasy...
if you want a game based on making the nastiest list you can and stomping people with it, 40k is better...
whatever you choose, just make sure there are people who play the same system where you live...
i play both vampires and marines among other armies, both are a pretty solid selection for their games...

LOL.
You play Vampires, one of the most broken lists in the current environment, and claim that Fantasy requires intellect.
Then you play SM, which are blah, and claim that it's about nasty lists.

Can we not do this EVERY time?
WFB is often described as more tactical, but whether or not that's true, it's also more limiting, both in movement, and in deployment.
Terrain is almost irrelevant in WFB, and rarely used. Cover is central to 40k.
Also, in WFB, once you've fulfilled your quota of Core units, there's no incentive to take more. 40k is more based around Troops, the equivalent.
If you want a Rank and File army, ironically, play 40k.

Ok,
I don't see why being more limited has to mean less fun. Yes, movement is slower, but if anything, doesn't that make it more tactical than 40k? You actually have to think about unit place and try to calculate your opponent's moves in advance, rather than having the ability to move freely. 40k is more about combos, as it doesn't matter if I have a masterstroke move, I can still be lash'd and blown up by plasma.
Terrain isn't irrelevant. Skirmishers, Cavalry, etc. can use terrain to either hide in, move through and out-maneuver the opposing force. Hell, Wood Elf players practically love forests.
I'll give you the Core Choice, though in an Orc and Goblin army/ VC army you'll have tons of Cores.
I don't like to think that either game is better, but both are equal, IMHO.

It's also funny as he plays as VC, who don't care at all about precision, Maneuvering or intellect. Just forward your zombies for maximum death!
OnG, on the other hand...

Exactly.
Now, if he actually played an army in which:
- movement was limited each turn to just the movement phase
- units could only lose models and wounds
- psychology mattered
- break tests were taken
then the claims about precision, etc. might have some meaning.
But VC negates *all* of that.
And of course, if he were a real man, he'd play an army with a further psychology challenge that needs to be dealt with, such as:
- O&G (Animosity)
- DoW (Paymaster Panic)
I'd make more fun of him playing an army of all 4 stats and 3+ saves, but that'd just be too much.

wow, calm down folks, stick to the OP.
I play both fantasy and 40k, almost 80% of my fantasy games were against VC (I play orcs/goblins) until my brother just traded his army. I can say that vamps are very fun to play with/against. Sure, 90% of the time I got rolled, and every draw I treated as a solid victory for me, but they were fun games. In 40k I can't say much for the space marines as the closest I've played is Chaos space marines, but just from what I've read, generic marines are kind of too bland.
If I had to pick between 40k and fantasy, I'd go with 40k atm, just because I've just gotten started with it and it's still all very new, but fantasy is great great fun, and every army actually HAS CC units! (looking at you, tau, boo kroot)

Although it breaks my green, warty heart, I'd also suggest 40k. Fantasy is going through a kind of power imbalance right now.

To be honest, I think its unfair to even compare WH40K and WFB.....
Imagine taking a god like view of time and space....in this god like state you are told you have an enemy, and you have to beat this enemy.....in order to battle your foe you can either march armies across a landscape firing rocks and arrows until you finally meet where you then hack each other with swords, magic and clubs! or, on the other hand you can orbital bombard them, drop heavy attack tanks and fire laser cannons clear from one end of the battlefield to the other.....what would you chose?
WH40K is to WFB what modern warfare is to "The Battle of Hastings".....as a player, in a god like state, you can chose what sort of genre for war interests you most.....talking about tactics and war lists is all secondary.....you're not going to play a game with elves and goblins if you like space age robots and killer aliens with claws....

I'd say start with whichever one is available in your area. If both are then I'd go for 40k first. A year ago I might've said it's 50/50. Right now the movement rules for Fantasy are too complicated and it takes forever to move through or around terrain, which is why your rarely see a lot of it in Fantasy. Whereas in 40k movement through/around terrain is much easier to accomplish (i.e. no wheeling of units).
The other thing that 40k has over Fantasy is the importance of individual models in units. In 40k, every marine in a unit can fire his bolter/fight in melee in a turn. In Fantasy only the first row gets to fight. The rest of the unit just provides extra wounds and rank bonus. It's pretty disheartening to look at a 40 clanrat skaven unit and realize most of those rats don't actually do anything in a fight. Sooo .... why bother putting all those extra models together? *shrug*
Don't get me wrong, I like WFB. But the rules need some serious tweaking right now.

I reckon you should look at your preferences. If you want to wait for tournaments to play and a few practices here and there then go for the least played one - or look at which game has the biggest prescence locally and go for that. Or you could look at which genre you like better - space wars or swords and shields. I realise this has all been said, but this is just a summary. Also, you should try the intro games and see which you like more. Good luck
