best video games you have ever played. Make them games that have effected you the most. No insulting other peoples lists.

5. AGE OF EMPIRES GOLD EDITION(PC). this was the first game I ever played so it deserved a spot.

4. GUITAR HERO 2(PS2). best soundtrack and changed the way I perceived games. Made me try new things outside of fps and rts.

3. GRAND THEFT AUTO SAN ANDREAS (PS2). hands down the best sandbox game I have ever played. Had a huge map and a million things to do on it.

2. ROME TOTAL WAR(PC). If you have played this game before you can understand why this is my favorite rts. A truly strategic game.

1. FALLOUT 3 (PS3). Surely the greatest game of the new millennium. I bought it not expecting it to be great but I was proven wrong. Very wrong.

so what are your top 5?

I can't narrow things down to five, too many great titles.

Fallout 3, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Shadowgrounds, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Sims 2, Phoenix Wright, World in Conflict, Rock Band 2, Batman Arkham Asylum and the list goes on and on and on.

Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

5. Star Control - So simple, so fun! The ultimate Ro-Sham-Bo!
4. Tenchu - Although the later levels were rubbish, in altered my perception of what video games can be.
3. Silent Hill 2 - Never has there been a better blend of story and game. Incredible!
2. Metal Gear Solid 3 - Wow, just wow!
1. Resident Evil 2 - My first game on the PSOne (I bought a PlayStation just for this game) after a several year break from Video Games. Also I love Zombies. Incredible and immersive experience at the time.

Honorable mentions (Yes there is a bunch because it's too hard to narrow down):

Fallout 3 - One of the greatest but only though the reflection of time will it make the list.
Company of Heroes - This is my solid number six!
Vigilante 8 - Ah, so good, so fun!
Madden 92 - The last great Madden game.
Resident Evil 1 - Duh, it's old school Resident Evil.
ESPN NFL 2K5 - The game was brilliant, the price was right. Curse you EA for your exclusive NFL contract! (Tell me EA wasn't scared)
Commandos (Series) - A whole lotta fun!
GTA3 San Andreas - As already said, great sandbox.
KotoR - Do I really need to go into this?

In no particular order:
Civilization (biggest time sink ever)
Command and Conquer (amazing at the time, still great fun even today)
GTA3 San Andreas (best sandbox game ever)
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (best games-are-art game ever, gripping to the end)
Super Mario World (the pinacle of 2d platformers and the entire 8-16bit era imho)

So many strong mentions that I could not even begin to list them, but sonic 2, street fighter 2 turbo, fallout 3 (which might make the list with more time), transport tycoon and R-type would definitely be on it.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

1) Half-Life 2 (and additions) - A fantastic set of physics, graphics and voice acting with a cast of characters that you vaguely care about, mixed in with the continuation of the fantastic saga that is the Half-Life world.

2) Carmageddon - The most fun I have ever had driving. Ever. A fantastic game simply because it is so much damn fun.

3) Wolfenstein Enemy Teritory - I absolutely love team games, and this is one of the team games that I love the most. Not played it for a long time now, but it used to dominate my gaming time.

4) Soldier of Fortune - "The crime: Subway urination - the punishment: Death". I could have bought this game for that picture caption alone (from PC Zone). Limb shooting offily good.

5) Red Alert - I have absolutely no idea how much of my life was spent making horrifically skewed maps for this game so I had unlimited resources and could build whatever I wanted

Honourable mentions:
CoD 3 (I loved to play as the medic)
Halo 3 (best matchmaking system and best user feedback I've seen in a mainstream game for some time)
Unreal Tournament (Used to spend days making levels for this game and I spent my longest single game session on this fantastic game - 4 days without sleep or breaks)

God clthomps your top 5 have a serious sense of nostalgia going on.

It's not just for nostalgia, Honestly the gaming industry has gone to gak.

When was the last time you bought a game that had a good story line and character development? FF3 (6) was the last main stream RPG that had a decent plot great character design (thanks Amono!), and development.

Look at the crap they feed kids today. Its all flashy cinematics, sex, violence, and product placement, the only company that seems to care is nintendo, and then they are trying for a younger market demographic.

And WTF is up with arcade games that don't have joysticks? Really now does every game need some sort of gimmicky way of playing? I went into an arcade recently and couldn't find one single joy stick! (not even on the fighter games)

For the record Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is the best Fighter ever made. It barely missed my top 5 list, and the only reason I didn't include it is because of its gakky music loop on the character select screen. I swear if I hear "I'm going to take you for a ride." for long enough I will snap and kill someone.

There are others that are close, Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 2, Powerstone, AD&D on the Megadrive, Road Rash 3DO and probably a couple turn based Strategy RPG's I can't think names of.

Only five this is way too hard:

1.) Final Fantasy 6

This first game I ever bought with my own hard earned money. I would come home from work tired as heck and play this till like midnight.

2.) Chrono Trigger

My favorite RPG (and maybe video game) of all time. The whole product was well polished and left a lasting impression on me.

3.) Warsong

I swear I'm not copying with Warsong. I must have rented it 5 or 6 times before the local rental store just offered to sell it to me. That's alot of money for a kid to spend on one game. I still haven't beat the game. It's gets ridiculous at the end, and I never let any of the generals die.

4.) Starcraft

I spent way too much time in college playing this instead of doing work.

5.) General Chaos

Play this game with a buddy. It's really one of the greatest two player experiences ever.

If I could list more I'd add:
Lifeforce
Super Mario RPG
Marble Madness
Phantasy Star 1 (for the SMS)
paperboy
Baldur's Gate 1
Last Blade
Fallout 2
Silent Hill 1
Portal
Adventure! (for the Atari 2600)

It's hard to narrow games down to best, because nostalgia plays such a big part. So I figure I'll just think of the games I've spent the most time playing, and accept that it'll favour the games that were around when I had the most spare time.

Fire & Ice (Amiga)
Chaos Engine (Amiga)
Syndicate (Amiga)
Dune 2 (Amiga)
X-Com Apocalypse (PC)
Halo (X-Box)

I just realised that's six games, but I've no idea which one I'd cut from the list. They all had multiple month long periods when they were what I was doing with my spare time, and no other game ever occupied my time like that (Gianna Sisters on the C64 and Baldurs Gate II are probably next on the list, but they're miles behind the six games above).

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
