1. Dragonforce (Sega Saturn) - Greatest RPG I ever played. The first game that realy introduced the concept of armys into an RPG husk. Awesome, classic.
2. Final fantasy 6 (SNES/PS1) - The best Final Fantasy bar none. Epic story plot, long game, tons of characters (by far the most playable of any FF to date), best FF villain ever, and the first time a moogle was playable!
3. God of War (PS2) - Probably the most epic action game of all time in my eyes. It reinvented many of the basic gaming conceptions we had for action games in general, introducing cinematic elements into damn near everything you did. Boss fights felt so huge it was awe inspiring, and the story was breathtaking. GoW 2 overall was better, but GoW 1 stands out for me as the step that took action games where they need to go (I mean tons of games have taken ideas from it!)
4. Shining Force 1 (Genesis) - My first true RPG, a classic for the ages. Great story and character depth, and the difficulty was just right. I also loved how many characters you got and how many secrets there were to unlock! I want SF4 damnit :(
5. Xenogears (PS1) - My favorite PS1 RPG, its a crime that Xenosaga was so terrible and convoluted. Had the best battle system I've ever played, the most game play in an RPG since FF7, animation was tight, and the adult/psychosomatic storyline was top notch. So many twists and turns are woven into the story!
other honorable mentions;
- Metal Gear Solid Series
- Disgaea Series
- All other Shining Force games
- Fallout 3
- Oblivion
- Neverwinter Nights
- KotOR
- Baulders Gate
- Starcraft
- Warcraft 3
- Super Mario RPG
- marvel vs capcom 1/2
- Guilty Gear X
- Castlevania SOTN
- Robotrek
- Ogre Battle
- Ogre Tactics
- far too many others to keep going ;_;

Ugh, a top 5 is not doable, I think I'll list the games that got me hooked to a certain genre.
Civilization: Turn based strategy love genesis. Followers were the other Civilization games, Masters of Orion 2, Ascendancy, Romance of the III Kingdoms 2, Axis General, Alpha Centauri, Colonization
Zelda: First of the action based adventures. Others are the other Zelda games, Secret of Mana, Diablo 1&2, Kingdom Hearts, Jak & Daxter
Final Fantasy 2: Here the love for adventure games started, epic music and story for its time. In this category also fall the other FF games, Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1/2/3
GTA 3: The inception of the popularity of todays host of sandbox games, I got immediately hooked to the genre.
Dune 2: RTS where it began. I'm not the biggest fan of the genre (I like turnbased better) but I really liked C&C, Mechcommander 1&2.
Top Gear: This in retrospect crappy racer got me playing Mario Kart, F-Zero and other great racing classics (also comes back in games like GTA)
U.F.O: Deservedly in many people their top 5. Action point based squad shooters, love'em!
I'm sure I'm not mentioning loads of games here, things like time-flow strategy games like Europa Universalis 1&2, the hard to place Ogre Battle, oh, Mechwarrior games, my great love for the shooting genre. I'll even throw in a few FPSs like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark.

5 - Resident Evil 1 + 2 - Reason I went out and bought a Playstation
4 - Final Fantasy 7 - Good way of using the PS hardware.
3 - Modern Warfare - Never interested in playing online games, but clicked in the wrong are once. Thought while I was there I might give it a try. Game over.
2 - Fallout 3 - Oh. Good. God. - Talk about a day waster. This is my new obsession right now. So much to cover and find. Follow the story line or go out on your own. Do good things or be evil or impartial. Makes me think back to the good old times of...
1 - Diablo 2 + Exp. - Now that is a day killer. Looting, saving and do it again. Just to see what I can find. I know the story inside and out, but hoarding to find something new is just so much stinking fun.
I pray that DIII is just as good as 2. Here is to hoping.

Final Fantasy 6
Simply the most engrossing FF game i have ever played, and i will always come back to it
Chrono Trigger
It just an amazing game. I spent hours playing it on a snes emulator only to find that the rom was busted so the main story could not be completed, I could always just go and beat up lavos but never saw the point. recently when they released it on DS I rushed out and bought a DS, only to realize none of the stores in my area stocked it, or were likely to stock it. then i wandered into a small game exchange place and saw it. Needless to say, my money left my money faster than light.
Crash Bandicoot 3
An integral part of my video gaming childhood as the first game i ever really played. and played I did. Plus it was the pinnacle of platforming on the playstation
Metal Gear Solid 3
IMO the best in the series (although i haven't got around to finishing MGS4) although MGS 2 moved me more, the gameplay meshed the combat with the stealth, plus hunting.
Fallout 3
Just love it, had it for months, only just did tranquility lane, can't wait for the GOTY edition so i can play the DLC's on my PS3

2. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (favourite multiplayer game)
3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (as above)
4. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (brilliant single player mode)
5. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (The level on the VSS Valhalla almost gave me nightmares, that's how good it is)

Threads like this make me feel old.
5 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - you can keep all the N64 and beyond games - boring as hell. The SNES version was wonderful fun.
4 - Mega Man 2 - Just because.
3 - Resident Evil 4 - amazing experience, best in the series; I have played since RE1 was released in 1996
2 - God of War series - I imported Devil May Cry in 2001, and this genre has been good to us. DMC, NG, and GoW are the crown jewels of third person action games. They all play a bit differently (with regards to combos and cancels and tanking, etc), but I give GoW the nod for having the most complete package. DMC is deeper and NG is tighter, but GoW is richer and more epic. (As an aside, Zid, DMC set the stage for GoW 4 years earlier: orbs, upgrading moves, big boss fights - DMC was the third person action game that built the genre conventions - GoW just polished it up, simplified it a bit, and gave it a worthy story).
1 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - personal favorite. Art direction and gameplay like butter.
Honorable mention: Metroid/Super Metroid, COD4:MW, Goldeneye, Panzer Dragoon and PD Zwei

I love console games and if the list was larger I'd throw in titles like Goldeneye but PC is where my time is spent mostly.
1. Half Life 1 including Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike mods : Really got me into FPS and online gameplay.
2. Starcraft + Brood Wars : Best RTS of all time, so good that I can't see how SC2 won't be disappointing but Blizzard has yet to disappoint me
3. Half Life 2 including Team Fortress 2 and CS: Source : Like Blizzard, Valve doesn't disappoint and these are two of the best PC game companies ever
4. Command and Conquer series especially Red Alert 1 and 2 : I was a LAN/online RTS nut!
5. World of Warcraft series: Imo a great game series especially with IRL friends and a good virtual community to back it up.
Honorable mention: X-Wing Alliance - Really the only flight game I got into and the amount of scenarios you could customize was awesome not to mention the single player was a Star Wars fanboy's dream at the time.

Here are some of my faves, no real order:
Bushido Blade (PS1): Best fighting game EVER. One hit kills, the closest to true melee combat in a game. IT was GREAT.
ChronoTrigger (SNES): Best RPG ever.
Final Fantasy 3 [American Version(SNES)]: Second Best RPG ever.
Burnout 3 - Takedown (Xbox): Most enjoyable driving game made by mankind.
Need For Speed - Hot Pursuit 2 (PC): Best of the series, I played this game for hours ata a time.
Mechwarrior Games (PC): I'm a Battletech nerd, I will play any of them, any time.
Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past (SNES): Was there anything bad about this game?
Halo 1 (Xbox): The first is still the best.
Rock Band 2(Xbox 360): Only game I could play with my brother, wife and MOM. Wonderful fun. Watching the mother-in-law attempt to drum is also hilarious.
Castle Crashers (Xbox 360 Arcade Game): 4 player, side scroller that is just FUN. Everything a co-op arcade game used to be, but modernized and very funny.

- Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I just love that franchise and Brawl is just fantastic. - Zelda: Twilight Princess. To me, TW is the better Ocarina. It takes most of the things that were so great about the N64 Zelda and makes them better. Link is badass, you get a real sowrdfight with Ganondorf, the boss battles are amazing etc. - Final Fantasy 7 it was my first FF game and I have very fond memories of it. I just wish they would finally get working on a remake. - Jak 3 The Jak & Daxter series is one of my favourite franchises and the 3rd game not only had great gameplay, but I really liked the story as well. The plot twist really hit me hard and there were few villians in a game I was so eager to get my hands on. The 5th spot is difficult. There are so many games I love and it's hard to pick just one. - the first GBA Fire Emblem - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, which I find to be much better than SotN - Conker's bad fur day - Batman Arkham Asylum
