Ultramarine Land Raider Pilot on Cruise Control

So, after the astonishment of last months WD tactics article containing actual tactics, I assumed it was back to business as usual this month when the 'Space Hulk advert issue' dropped through my letterbox.
Imagine my astonishment then to find that after the inevitable reviews, adverts, painting guides, 'mission report' etc was done with to find not one, but two tournament articles.
Yes - that's right folks, tournaments. One was a review of the doubles tournament explaining how a pair of WD staffers had their asses handed to them, followed by a battle report. WFB Orcs vs Dark Elves. By two UKGT finalists with their own armies.
It took some time to pick my jaw up (although I did have to snigger at the inevitable aside about how tournament play would not be to 'everyone's taste') and realise that this was a genuine matchup. The armies were not studio armies (as evidenced by the converted hydra's being used in lieu of cold one chariots), the players were serious and the battle was not littered with stupid unit choices and dumb tactical decisions.
About this point I entered an alternate reality, as I even found myself going 'hmm, that's nice' at an Ultrasmurf featured army - also, so the painter claimed, collected for tournament play. In my defence I can only claim that the darker blue used worked much better than the standard 'eavy metal shade.
So, what do we make of this? Is GW finally making WD better? Are they going to start taking tournaments more seriously? Have I lost the plot?
All will be revealed...
...and we'll probably all end up disapointed. Its the GW way.

More importantly, turns out Jervis himself organised the first GT. At least according to one of those little sidebats in the first few pages.

He only organised it as a way of drawing out potential arsonists and future bank robbers. And speaking of illegal acts, did you know that tournament gamers are 8 times more likely to go onto kill someone than a casual game would and 14 (yes, 14!) more times likely to engage in some sort of serious criminal act before they turn 30. They also produce more deformed children. The more you know... This message brought to you by the Dakka Casual Gamer Mafia - 'Our Way is the Only Way!'

All that means is tournament gamers consider murder eight times a day more than you, so every time you consider murder, a tournament gamer *spits* is considering murdering 8 people - most of them probably casual gamers, which is a pity as us casual gamers are the bright sparks of humanity, the paragons of all that is virtuous in the world, a true apex of creation, if you will. Without us, the world is darker. They need us.

Obviously this is some sort of sinister plot in order to get competitive players to purchase subscriptions to white dwarf. Once that happens they will have your address.
Expect the stormtroopers to burst into your house any moment and take you away for thought crimes.

All i have to say is bring on next month's White Dwarf were we will finally get a decent look at space wolves. So i can gleefully plan my wolves.
Although personally as a newer person to the mag, have been playing but never found it worth while, i have felt it has slowly been improving in the 6 months or so i have been back, lets just hope its new and improved quality continues.

I think there was a vague mention in part 2 of the rok of ages campaign (there was certainly a bastion in the picture of the sallies army) but that was it.

Ok. As I thought. Come the release of the Space Wolves Codex I'm certain the mention of 'Planetstrike' to GW employees will get mentions of " Huh? What's that?".

The true Jervis Johnson was consumed by a white, shambling monstrosity that has plagued the minds and nightmares of men for time immemorial. What is left is but the husk of humanity, the inner workings of which are naught of this world. He whispers dark things to the cold midnight air and worships profane gods in the protection of his subterranean fortress from wince he poisons the mind of man with his magazine articles and ghastly tournament organization.
He is waiting. He is waiting with the patience of eons.
That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange eons even death may die.
I must go now, for I have spread my madness on to you. The void calls to me...the void...

I read somewhere that WD has dropped to about 10,000 circulation in the UK, which is about the limit of viability.
Perhaps they are worried about falling sales and have changed editorial direction to stop the rot.
