Just something for people to discuss whilst I'm away.
Not entirely sure where the concept came from, as it just sort of screamed from my mind. So like all good Memes, I'm seeing it's passed on...
So, what is this?
Create a Tournament with army books created by the organisers. Thus rather than Orks, you could accept 'Feral Orks' etc. This of course requires a lot of work, but I reckon it could be good for a laugh, provided you can convince the competitors to convert up an army especially for?

The codices would be have to be made well in advance.Yet I would worry about them being a bit overpowered(then it again GW does that already).A novel idea though, and it would be really fun to see a diverse range of converted armies. It would take awhile to convert them, thusly why the codices would have to be made well in advance.
OT:I miss my feral orks PDF codex, mechanical boars, squiggoths as heavy choices and orks that could accually shoot.I miss them so.

An escalation league with final tournament/campaign weekend could be the way to go with this.
Feral orks vs ?????
The writing of both codexes and background for the escalation/campaign would have to be v good!
It would probably work better within a smaller community.
Ask people what they want to collect and write the story around it.
Could work.

You could always just tweak the existing army books. For example, Specials and Rares only (OK...thats WFB) uhhh, Heavy Support and Fast attack only along with HQ choices. Upgrade every weapons AP by one point. Bring back old weapons like the Gravitron gun or Hallucinogen Grenades.
Even though my ideas might not be ideal, I imagine that vein of thinking would be a lot easier than attempting to rewrite codices. You could also have opponents switch armies.

There is actually a group that holds tournaments with their own modified army lists in nottingham, the name of the group escapes me, but you have new eldar lists, admech ones, etc making it in.

The concept of "Hobby" Tournament isn't too far from "Casual" Tournament that's been (briefly) discussed on Dakka before.
As I conceive it, a Hobby Tournament is can be a regular RTT, but with a very different focus on scoring:
40% Theme & Concept
30% Painting & Conversions
20% Sports
10% Battle & Comp
+5% Players Favorites
Reshuffling the scoring like this means that baby-killer lists to score big Battle points simply aren't needed and players can bring wierd, wacky, fun stuff.
Keep the points small, max 1500 pts, and maybe even trim the FOC back a bit to take the pressure off players trying to build lots of stuff for the army. Plus, Hordes are likely, so fewer points per game helps keep stuff moving.

And that's because, as we we all know, Tournament Gamers don't have souls. Why don't they have souls? Because of the Devil - obviously - the entity that Tournament Gamers so often pray to.

What about atheist tournament gamers?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Nah, it's just a different focus for each:
- "Casual" Gamers are the guys focused on fluffy lists and Sports.
- Hobbyists are the guys focused on unusual themes, modeling conversions, and painting - you know, *hobby* activities.
- Tournament Fighting Gamers are just focused on winning games.
But nice job in derailing the thread, guys...
I wasn't aware that baby-killing Tournaments were the only way to play. I thought that the GW hobby was large enough to do things that might focus on the hobby aspect or the casual aspect instead of always on the same no-holds-barred no-comp tournament-style gaming.
If you're not going to help the OP with the notion of doing something different, please get out of the thread.

DD has it.
By Hobbyists, I mean those who tend to heavily convert and scratchbuild their armies, and put the elbow grease into painting their army.
So it's more of a 'Fancy Pants' Tournament.

Grotsnik - There's no Dakka Casual Gamer Mafia? You mean to say that the exaggerated fictional group that I invented isn't actually real? Say it ain't so Grotsnik!!!
And while I know that there isn't a real DCGM, what is real is the holier-than-thou gak-don't-stink attitude from a number of 'hobbyists' here who claim some level of superiority because they don't play at tournaments, or those that lambast 'tournament gamers', instantly labelling them WAAC players and power gamers/cheese mongers (John does this all the time). And considering that this deplorable section of the hobby tend to be more vocal than the hardcore 'tournament crowd' (who seem to be far more willing to live and let live), I choose to parody them with my intentionally over-the-top DCGM broadcasts.
It does take a rocket scientist to figure that out...
This "casual gamer" vs "tournament gamer" thing has to end. John's definition is bs as it implies a level of mutual exclusivity (so there are no 'tournament gamers' who play for fluff), and how exactly do you play for sportsmanship? Is that like not playing to win? But then again, you'd expect a nonsense illogical definition from DD because he's DD, and he lives on a different planet to the rest of us, a planet where 'logic' can get you arrested.
A "casual gamer" would actually be someone who plays irregularly, someone who plays only when they get the chance to do so. The idea that a casual player plays for 'fluff and sports' is just false.

I haven't labeled anybody WAAC in this thread, so perhaps conspiracy boy ought to start learning to read or work on his comprehension.
I mean, holey carp, you can't have an event that does something differently? That rewards something other than Battle as the highest weight? Gawd ferbid...

Not in here boys. Do it over PM or something.
I do appreciate it's fictional H.B.M.C. and I was sort of mucking about. Suppose a smiley might have helped like.
But yeah, the idea is a Tournament which appeals to those who enjoy all the aspects of the Hobby, but particularly those who like to convert and personalise their force. The idea is that it's a chance to show off the creative side of your Hobby, as well as get some unique games in to boot.

The OP's idea sounds pretty fun especially if you tie in a narrated campaign with the custom codices. It'll definitely take a strong community to make it a reality but if BolsCON and its website are any indication its definitely possible since people seem to like their custom codices.

I think the international community is strong enough for such an event to succeed. I mean, people already travel hundreds, perhaps thousands of mile in some cases to attend their favoured tournaments and this one has the additional draw of getting to show off and compare skills with other conversion nutters.

It would be right up my alley. I'm converting and painting my exodite eldar and using dinosaur models for my grav tanks. As it stands now, if I choose to enter a tourney, I'll have to field my list as a footslogger because my "tanks" aren't lizzie stegodons. Nothing against the model, but I like the variety using classic dinosaurs provides. In a tourney like what Mad Doc proposes, I'd have a better chance of putting my models into the "competitive" arena and having them be accepted.

You'd essentially have a science fair.
"This is my crazy army! Killer volcanoes!"
People would need crazy lead time to get this stuff together. Also, part of the appeal
of doing a crazy army just for the sake of it, is that it's still playable outside of your
game group. A crazy-go-nuts centered event is asking people to spend hundreds of dollars
and time in order to fit a one-off situation.
What does this event offer to someone who wants to use their army regularly?

We ran something like this for WFB at our FLGS a few years back before they went under.
Rather than the standard tournament scenarios/composition scores, we used the Skirmish book that was available at the time, with the skirmishes altered to lead in to the campaign ending with a climatic finale of whoever was left
It was quite fun, starting my Wood Elf army with Shadows in the Forest, then Woodland Ambush, then getting a modified Baggage Train scenario against a Dwarf army.
It ended with me getting my ass kicked assaulting a Dwarf army, even with them having limited shots for the cannons, -1 to all their combat resolutions for being underfed and constantly ambushed, and somehow they got a giant by the ambush...
But damn was it FUN!
