Toowoomba, Australia

Finally after years of rubbish battle reports where we get 2 game turns with 1 pic and a few notes or maps at random intervals and ridiculous scenarios, WD this month finally did a WHFB report where they pitted 2 tournament players, with (alleged) tournament lists (even in Composition score heavy Australia they would definitely be seen as uber weak) of their own choosing.

Sure they had a couple of added rules but they didn't play much part in the game.

Best part though was 1 clear map with what was happening per player turn. then a pic or 2 of important events and decent notes.
For the first time since the Oz WD was killed off and the 'homegrown' Australian excellently done battle reports disappeared I have been able to easily follow a WD battle report.

WD has had a lot of problems but finally, finally they have done a decent battle report.

Create-a-mission not in WD. Think it will make its bow on the GW site.

I concur with WG: This month's White Dwarf was the best I've ever seen. Granted, I only started playing last year, but still.

Mission Report for Space Hulk was fun to read, got me to try the game, which I subsequently loved.
Battle Report between the Tournament guys was fun to read: Even if they were kinda scrubby, it was a huge leap up to see them actually using the sort of choices everyone uses at tournaments. They had a Goblin Dart!
Call me a softy, but I loved reading about the WD guys at the team tourney. Sounds like they had a blast.

3 articles out of a magazine that I actively enjoyed? Some sort of record. The only thing I could have liked more was a design philosophy interview about the upcoming wolves codex.

Seriously, great job GW!

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Hi all.
So people are going to praise GW for putting actual content in thier magazine?
Wow , can you praise me for doing all the stuff I am SUPPOSED to do while you at at it?

(If I messsed up my work as much as GW messed up on WD , I wouldnt have a job!)

After years of mindless low brow marketing aimed at insulting the intellegence of 'da kiddz'.
And circulation dropped to a quater of what it was.
They realised that just pimping the latest releases does not make for an interesting read.

(And the studio were allowed to revert to the old format.)

It was a good battle report but other than that the magazine had no other high points. WD is nothing like it was three or even two years ago. I think we were lucky to get a real batrep for once.

Thats what i was wondering at first as well....

So one battle report makes the whole WD good? ( or are the fans trying so hard to believe ? )

Considering BatReps are a main feature of the magazine, yes, that greatly improves it, but the real kicker is that it might be a sign of good things to come!

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

The Battle Report was a vast improvement, not just for the use of non-Heavy Metal armies, but also for the maps where the key actually made sense. Got really, really irritated by regiments/units being referenced by a random number or a letter rather than say, a Tactical Arrow (Tactical Squad) or an Orc Skull (Orc Boyz Regiment).

Would add that painting articles have also been very good over the last 6-12 months.

Now if they'd only get shot of LoTR...

Well I'm sorry I missed that battle report. I finally stopped buying the magazine 4 months ago after they jacked the cover price to $9.00. GW wouldn't let my local independent retailer order them at subscription price for us, and I got tired of the lack of content. In fact with the exception of 4 people no one gets WD anymore at my local shop. They all canceled their monthly order after the price "adjustment". It's just too expensive for what you get.

I still have mine from around the Storm of Chaos era, but stopped buying them shortly after that and haven't seen a reason to pick any of the newer ones up since. Maybe one day they'll hook me back in. They have plenty to fix first though.

Lol, scrubby?! One of those guys is ranked no. 1 in the uk at the moment, having captained our ETC team. The other is top 20.

Tho to be fair, you might note that England finished mid-pack in the ETC.

If GW really wanted true "tournament" play, they'd need an Italian, like Cavatore.

That said, I can't wait to see who they showcase the new Skaven against. I'm hoping it's against Daemons, as proof positive that WD batreps are hopelessly canned in favor of the new army. OTOH, if Skaven win on their own merit, well, I guess we're seeing confirmation of a new power level in WFB overall.

Look the reason why this issue of WD is the best one in a long time is because of the absence of LOTR, thus feeling old school and who doesn't love old school?

Just amazed that no one has actually consciously noticed this yet!

Maybe that's becuase it's utter nonsense and just a cheap excuse to flaunt prejudice against the what is considered by many to be the core game GW has going for it atm? Seriously, I'm not kidding, at my local club WotR gets played more now than 40K and WFB put together. It's certainly killed my own desire to collect anything new for WFB, whereas I'm picking up bits for 3 separate WotR armies. I realize that my anecdotal evidence is not true evidence but I've spent allot of money with GW collecting these forces and to suggest that I'm not a proper hobbyist whose money is worth less than yours and thus less deserving of a slice of WD is plain ludicrous.

Anyway back on topic yep WD is certainly improving, it's not quite at the level I'm considering renewing my subscription just yet.

The reason people despise LOTR is because to older players it comes across as a specialist game that will not go away. Can you imagine if they dedicated a third of the magazine to Gorkamorka every month? LOTR is laughably dated now to the point where it's embarrassing. It cannot grow in the same way that WFB of 40k can. Also, the general concensus is that it is mainly played by 11 year olds.

If people holler at me about it being oh-so popular then it should have had its own publication like WHQ or Necromunda did. As it is; it was bolted on to WD and its toxic prescence rammed home the point that WD was, and is, simply an expensive joke.

Gonads review is inspiring; lets hope it's the start of a bright new age. I too miss the battle reports of old that included that mystical idea of 'content'.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

I'm afraid, in my experience, nothing could be further from the truth. WotR and LotR are mainly played by Veteran gamers who, for one reason or another, are fed up of WFB and 40K and found LotR/WotR to be a refreshing change with clearer rules, more subtle tactical challenges and a different aesthetic to the miniatures. Certainly the reason I got into the game was because I was pleased to see a GW that didn't revolve around list building. It's also played by many historical gamers, on some historical boards LotR gets lots of praise even from those who mainly detest GW and all it stands for. The days of LotR being bought by Kids are long gone I'm afraid, I honestly can't remember the last time I saw an 11 YO playing LotR, they're far to busy buying Space Marines.

As for the 1/3 of WD thing, LotR has NEVER gotten 1/3 of WD, not even during a major release, in which case it may get 20-25%. Normally LotR get's 5-10% of WD. It's also worth nothing that when LotR was first released the number of pages in WD was increased so space wouldn't be taken away from 40K/WFB. The LotR francise brings money into the hobby and deserves it's slice of the WD pie. No amount sulking by jaded haters will change this.

Actually i was really looking forward to the SH battle report in the latest WD when i realised that first turn straight away the marine player has lost!
2 of his marines moved all 4 AP's then used 2 CP's each to go on overwatch.
this would have worked had he not pulled a 1 as his CP.
shame the game was technically over before it started...

my fave ever WD was 222, it had a fantastic battle report "Last stand at glazers creek" Hordes of greenskins attacking pith helmeted Praetorians in a perfect copy of "Zulu". absolutely wicked

and yes i've been playing that long, in fact i started in 90- although i started WD from around 160 ish

White Dwarf deserves nothing but scor... hold on *reads issue* ... ok that Hulk report was actually pretty interesting. And it's nice to see non-studio armies fighting. Shame about the Realm of Battle Board being used again.

And the Terminators won that Hulk game Melonfish. Just sayin'.
