So from what I understand, the only thing that has happened thus far is that people have written about things that happened in the 41st millennium. What am I missing? Can anyone provide me with a chronology?

Somewhere in south-central England.

You'll never see real change in the 40K universe, I reckon.

There's this thing about the "Ending Times" in the 5e rulebook, but the previous two rule-books used to bang on about the human race hanging on by its fingernails when it is the largest empire in the galaxy, has millions of worlds and trillions of people, and has been chuntering along essentially unchanged for 10,000 years.

That's not quite the edge of oblivion as I understand the term.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Nothing. Were all stuck in 999M41. Every single codex/rulebook......

A very very long year.

(Tonight we're going to party like it's 40,999!)

So, if the 42nd milllennium has rolled around and the Emperor hasn't stepped off the throne or anything, what is keeping GW from letting us know what's going on? Instead, we've got the (admittedly great) HH series. One wonders whether there won't be some contemporary timeline progression by the end of those novels.

40K's problem is that it's "Warfare in the Dark Millenium" or something like that. Changing the date in 40K would be like releasing a wargame named 'WWII Strategic Battles' or something and then releasing a WWI expansion. It'd be chaos, confusion and brand dilution!

Hmm, all the codexs (including the new Wolves codex) and rulebook all seem to stop at 999.M41 it just seemed like they dont want to go into M42, cause then the games name should be Warhammer 41,000 or 41k for short. Not as catchy! If it weren't for Cain there'd be no M42, and it seems that all the references are like in fantasys Gotrek and Felix where it talks about his book being published in the future, so you know the character will get the book published. Seems thats what its done, and its all from the same file/book. So thats basically the company not saying 'Dont go into M42!' but theyll probably re-fluff it so it couldnt of been M42. Same for Medusa V, it was just a summer campaign, doubt they put much effort into making it canon for the timeline. They'll soon be ratified!

They could move on easilly without changing it. Only problem is that to fight DE you'd need a time machine. You already need one for Squats though

They probably will go to M42...but nothing much will have changed. Emperor's chair still failing, DE still without a Codex and another failed crusade by Abaddon. *le sigh*

There'd be no 40k if Adaddon won. It'd be Nids vs Chaos. Tau/Eldar/DE etc would be over run easily, same for Necrons who'd probably just crop up now and again. Pretty boring -__-

Tend to agree, I always saw "the end" as being Chaos vs Nids, although I cant see the Nids really venturing into Chaos territory since there isnt a lot of organic material, and if there is its horribly mutated and possibly lethal to them.

On the other hand Nids dont have any suscptible psykers (to open new rifts/portals etc) so after all other races had been subsumed by Chaos, their territory would effectively stagnate.

So a big stand off until the Nids have finished eating and move on to another Galaxy.

Hmmm, ok actually Chaos then wins.

When it first was announced, the Medusa V campaign was alluded to happening post-13th Black Crusade in the timeline and thus in the 42nd.

I have a theory with the Hulk which isn't supported 100% by canon but I like my idea better. If you pushed Bruce Banner off a cliff, before he died the Hulk would 'turn on', thus saving him and maybe if the Hulk wasn't even conscious about the death, like a sniper bullet coming towards him from behind, I'd like to think the Hulk would turn on the second the bullet hit his skin, as a sort of reaction.

Whats this got to do with anything? I believe like the Hulk, getting stronger the more angry he is, I believe Orks get stronger the more you kill and fight them. Orks grow massive if they survive fights, so I think if you ever got close to killing off all the Orks, theyre'd be a few giants left, but ofcourse their spores will just keep making more. A never ending war with Chaos vs the Orks, but the Orks, with alot more room to spread their spores, may actually outnumber chaos!

Edit: I've been playing for 10 or so years and I've never known the 13th Black Crusade was 'present-day'. gak, that just threw a whole lot into perspective. What a weird move for have GW to have wrote that years ago, but its at the same time as the stuff theyre writing now. Even though theyve wrote stuff before this time in the years between 13th BC and now....*brain goes fuzzy*

TL;DR - Orks Win!

I meant in that, Eye of Terror was like, 5 years ago or something!
I thought 999.M41 was only introduced in 5th ed. The fact the 13th company aren't written about in the Space Wolves new codex, even though a date in the codex timeline is 999.M41 which is the same year as the 13th Black Crusade where they've found the 13th company fighting out in the open of the cadian gate fighting Chaos, so theyre atleast, if not Public, Space Wolf knowledge. So the writers have pretty much ignored the fact the 13th crusades going on at the same time as this codex is set. Same as everyone else has forgot.

Im guessing 2010 will be a fantasy campaign so hopefully in 2011 we'll have a 40k summer campaign or maybe a winter campaign in 2010 (highly unlikely) that'll start off M42 with a bang!

Bring on Warhammer 41,000!

What would be awesome is if they actually released some major fluff. Like the eye of terror expanding or something. Similar to Eldrad/Black Stone fortress scenario but with more OOOPMH!
Or even better, they could intergrate Lord Seanron's thread into real fluff.

"And what are the achievements of your fragile Imperium? It is a corpse rotting slowly from within while maggots writhe in its belly. It was built with the toil of heroes and giants, and now it is inhabited by frightened weaklings to whom the glories of those times are half-forgotten legends."

I agree, your fluff is FTW but seriously I doubt GW will move forward the timeline, WH 41K just wouldn't work.

Maybe one of these days the old guard at GW will retire and some new guys will come in who realize that with the canvas of an entire galaxy, and an Imperium of a million worlds, they can afford to have some change and progression without it meaning that they have to stop selling miniatures.

I mean, so what if the imperium loses a fight or five? They won't immediately crumble or anything - it just makes the setting more interesting.

On that note, I will say that it bugs me when people jump all over Abaddon. The write-ups say that he HAS broken the Cadian gate. Most of the systems surrounding Cadia have fallen, and even though Cadia itself still stands, he has had at most a year or two to bust through. Even the comparatively tiny wars of our 20th century often take 5-10 years to see conclusion. If GW ever gets off its fluff duff ( ) then I think they'll have to admit that Abaddon will bludgeon his way through - and the spectre of looming Chaos can ONLY make things more interesting.

Actually, that's 100% supported by Ultimates Canon. It happened in Ultimates 1 Vol 2 fighting the Skrull. They threw Banner out of a helicopter.

@Platuan4th Sniper bullet though?

Anyway, despite the coolness of Dark Lord Seanrons fluff, it is unnacceptable. Pure heresy. The Emperor dead?!? HERESY!!!

Seriously though, it's not gonna change to 41k anytime soon.

As was asking your opinion on the matter, not trying to attack your statement. I honestly have no idea if Bruce Banner would survive a round to the head.

I think Banner has to know it's coming for the Hulk to have any reaction(especially now that he's more in control in both Ultimate and regular 616 Universes). I have a feeling Marvel thinkss this way, too, as they've never attempted it as far as I know. Everyone going for him always tries to either capture him(which he always comments is a mistake) or confront him head on because they actually WANT to face the Hulk. I've yet to really see any other approach(except that one Initiative kid's attempt at psycho-analyzing Hulk with his fear powers to beat him).

So your average psycopath could kill the Hulk on the condition that Bruce Banner never saw him coming?

If your average psychopath could sneak up on Bruce Banner completely silently, yes, I'm sure he could attack Banner. Whether Banner would actually die before his change(which is actually nearly instantaneous now if Planet Hulk is any indication) kicked in and Hulk's healing factor took over is another matter entirely.
