Fish and Chips - have you tried 'em?, do you like 'em?
I've heard there are a few 'Ye Olde British Chip-Shop' type places in America - do they compare well with the real thing?

Are you counting "non-yanks" in your non-brits?
Or is it just for those colonials who threw off the yoke?
I've had "brit" style fish n' chips.
Prefer my fish grilled though (broiler to USA) - really am not a fan of battered anything.
Chips are fine though. Big chunky cut ones, not those skinny shoelace "freedom" fries.

As a Brit, I've enjoyed fish and chips in the USofA in:
A restaurant on the Baltimore harbour, very nice, mahi mahi fish in a very light almost tampura(sp) batter with fries.
The Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport PA, a good fillet of alaskan pollock with an ale batter and sweet potatoe fries washed down with the local blonde beer, I can't recommend that place enough.
Both fish and chips were great but I suppose a little on the 'posh' side when compared to our own fish n chips.

At least on the Gulf Coast we are into proper seafood with a passion. The concept of fish and chips would make my mother and her side of the family spit in disgust at the insult just given to the fish (not really, but we are serious about the fish and "fish and chips" as I understand it is not the primary method).

I enjoy the occasional fish and chips. I've had them locally (USA style), Irish, and in London. Of the three, I enjoyed the Irish the most. It was cooked with the skin still on, but the bones removed. The London variety still had bones inside, which was a little too authentic for my Yankee palate.

You gotta have vinegar on the chips though, for it to be proper fish and chips.
Fraz: Don't worry, we do fairly good seafood over here too, fish and chips is fast food.

You can get fish & chips at any number of pubs and bars here on the East Coast of the US, at least. Irish and English-themed pubs in particular. The more authentic ones will have malt vinegar and/or brown sauce available. This is my go-to meal at such an establishment. Quality can vary a bit, but it's usually pretty comparable to what I had in London.

We don't generally see fish as fastfood here. Thats kind of limited to the horror of Long John's Silver. Local places may vary. We have one joint that does a nice fried catfish-yea thats pretty fish and chips.

@ Da Boss - Yeah, it doesn't qualify as 'proper' cuisine (well, to MOST people ) and you're spot-on regarding vinegar, mate.
I've never had bones in Fish'n'Chips - can't imagine that being pleasant.

Except for a few cases(Sushi, Crab Cakes, occasionally Oyster), I don't touch sea food. It's the taste and texture. I don't like 'em(especially Shrimp and Crawfish). Now, everyone's gonna gang up on the Louisiana-born boy for not being a true Louisianian.

There were alot in California when i was there, i tried about 6 or 7 places at least. Same as English style usually, but there is a place on the Pier in Santa Barbara that i went past and the people were actually eating trays with fried fish and CRISPS in them!
No gak! Obviously in the USA chips generally are potato chips i.e Crisps to the Brits, and Chips are French Fries.. but that was the only place i saw where it got totally lost in translation!

I've never had fish and chips in the UK, but I've eaten my fair share of it in restaurants in the US, and in British and Irish restaurants in Germany.
It's pretty much all over the place in the U.S., not really that exotic in my opinion. It's certainly delicious, though.

Being from New England for my first 22 years of life, Fish and Chips were a standard fare. And I love em.
But I love all forms of seafood. Cajun/Creole, LA, Texan are among my favs of general "style", to be very vague. And I love me a crab boil.

Fish and chips on the east and west coasts of canada are ubiquitous. and very good practically anywhere you go. granted, I haven't been to england, so I can't compare them, but I likes 'em. A question: do you brits serve fish and chips with coleslaw or is that just a north american eccentricity?

Here in the NW we have several options. Skippers is a fast food type fish shop that does decent fish and chips and a very good chowder. Burgerville has a halibut fish and chips that is very tasty as well.
Then there are a few singular shops around the Portland/Vancouver area that do great fried fish with chips.
