Subject: Non-Brits - A quick question...

Enigmatic Sorcerer of Chaos

I had Fish n'chips (that's Fush n' chups to all you kiwis out there) for the first time in about a year on Wednesday. It was some of the worst I've ever had in my life. For some reason, there is the stars n'stripes indicating my location on Dakka instead of the Hinomaru/Meatball that should be there. I assure you all, I am oscillating my atoms in the archipelago Chipangu, not stateside.
I went to Tokyo last week on Tuesday and made my way to an"authentic" British pub in Shibuya. I had a pint of p155 and some Fish n' chips. The pint was okay, but the fish n'chips were ghastly. A handful of fishsticks deep fried to a golden black and 11 chips. 11 exactly. Prime number of 11. indivisible except by itself and 1. The food was around 1000 yen or $12 US and it was total gak, pardon my french.
Ethnic food isn't hard to come by here, but good ethnic food is. I think they even import Diet Coke now.

I know why - it's because you're a bloody genius!
It's worth pointing out that Fish and Chips in London are fething terrible. It's a northern invention (Bury? Could be Preston, can't remember), best enjoyed north of Birmingham IMHO. Manchester and Blackpool have a few decent places - but the best overall standard is in the North-East (Whitby Cod!), as far as I'm concerned.
Now, Pie and Mash - that IS good in London. There's a fantastic little place that's a couple of hundred years old ( IIRC) near the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. Can't remember the name of it though.

It's not proper unless they serve it in an old newspaper.

I've had beer that tasted like old newspaper (and don't ask me what newspaper tastes like).

CaptainCommunsism wrote:Fish and chips on the east and west coasts of canada are ubiquitous. and very good practically anywhere you go. granted, I haven't been to england, so I can't compare them, but I likes 'em. A question: do you brits serve fish and chips with coleslaw or is that just a north american eccentricity?
Yup especially on the East coast, some still do the English style news paper wrapper ive heard about or seen in films from the UK (no idea if its a standard in the UK) From what i can tell you, the east coast of Canada has great fish and chips, one place, 'Lords' in Saintjohn NB in perticular is to die for. best there is to offer on the CEC

I've never had Fish and Chips in newspaper. In fact, I don't think they've done it since the 70's! Wouldn't exactly comply with food hygiene standards....

Late 80's in Scotland was the end of Newspaper wrappings!
English chippies really do not compare to Scottish chippies I'm afraid.
We cook in Lard, not girly vegetable oil. Batter is crisper, chips are fluffier, and the crowning glory of Chippy Sauce.
Though I was quite taken with the Chips and Gravy I got from the Diana down Cardiff's Chip Alley. Shame the girl dumped me, I could have eaten those more often!

Mmmm... Haggis. Let's turn this into a Haggis thread. Now.
