I've seen this in some documentary it uses nanotechnology to construct materials, clothes, cars etc... By using another matter's atoms and then rearranging them into another matter atoms. They say that this will be in commercial use by end of 20th century(21th first for you who count 0th century as a 1st century).Anyway that's a great tech.

Hail to the creeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!baby Ask not the moot a question, for he will give you three answers, all of which will result in a public humiliation.

I thought that in 1999 the moon would have gone flying off with moon base alpha to explore the universe (with flared trouser uniforms and all), stopping off strangely long times each week despite the fact that they must have been going faster than the speed of light to cover so much ground in between shows...

Damn you reality for letting us all down!

Just as happy about that considering all the idiot drivers there are.

Well the Zentraedi were already supposed to have attacked and wiped out the earth by now, so I for one am ok with time delays.

As for the OP, I'm sure the theory of making a Fabricator is around, but actually making one that works at our current level of technology is beyong our grasp and will be for a good while yet. And even if/when we can make them, they certainly won't be for domestic use, they be used for military and commercial purposes for weapons, fuel and technology. It won't be soup of the day after a long days work.

Judging from how our technology is exapnding quickly, the end of the century may be a feasible deadline for such a thing, but I wouldn't personally hold your breath

The problem with nano tec is that it works on such a small scale (obviously). But the environment at those scales is totaly different to the macro environment that we exist in.

Which means that nano machines are exposed to all sorts of stuff which will attempt to tear them apart. Not to mention the obvious scale factor again... even in their trillions, nano machines will take a long time to build something as big and complex as a car from a pile of junk.

The cumulative effort of many machines will be great for drug production, etc, where the products are only a few orders of magnitude larger than the machine itself, but where you have something which is many orders larger, you are firmly in the relm of science fiction, certainly in terms of the near and even mid-far future.

WEll it-s near future so it is not science fiction(mostly).

I believe that is actually a quotation taken out of context. If memory serves, he was referring to a specific, very niche machine.

Was still wrong about that though

And these machines are going to make hiding the bodies even easier! Don't bury them under the patio, turn them into the patio!

The children of our current generation will have ideas we think is crazy. My daughter thinks touchscreen devices are just a part of everyday life, and plays with them every day. 10 years ago, I thought there was nothing that could beat the quality of Digital Versatile Disks. In high school, a terabyte was a theoretical hard disk capacity. What I am saying is this:

Don't say "no" to things you can't understand. Say maybe. Be skeptical, but keep an open mind.
When my daughter said she wants to make tiny robots (and she has, but that was when I was scratch building mah deffdred, lol), I didn't tell her to "turn off the Jetsons and walk around outside."

I try to foster her creativity, because who knows, my daughter may find a cure for cancer. I am not going to deny that to the world because it is unprecedented.

I apologize if I am extra snarky today.

I am a damaged individual screaming random obscenities into the internet, sorry if I upset you.

Isn't all chemistry already taking one material's atoms and turning them into another material's atoms?

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

No, Chemistry is taking One materials Atoms or Molecules and making them into different states of the same Atoms or Molecules.

Chemistry is taking Water (H2O) and making Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2).
Physics is taking Deuterium (H2 or D2 depending on what school of thought you belong to) and turning it into Helium (He)

I didn't mean the type of atom would change; the material the atoms compose would have changed.

After all, he said rearrange atoms, not rearrange subatomic particles. Although I suppose you could rearrange the subatomic particles within the atoms, and say that's rearranging the atom.

Hurr... Thank you for that preamble
Most people think I can't take a joke. I just like to know when the feth people are making jokes on this silly place we call da intarwebs. Context is key, but, sadly, it gets lost in text messages. As a QA tester/level designer, establishing proper context is part of my life... YMMV
I guess I don't help the situation when I post about my kids... I am just so damn proud of my progeny.

I believe there is a big difference between not giving a gak and making a joke (See: Dave Chappelle), and making a joke at others expense and not giving a gak (See: Carlos Mencia).

If they said that this will be in commerical use by the 2100s then maybe because that's a 100 years of development of that technology.Rmbember ENIAC that vas some 55 years and look how quickly have the computers developed. And we aren't Adeptus Mechanicus we aren't stuck with same tech for some 10k years.
