Seriously, I'm suprised if I go looking through more than 3 consecutive threads and not find some Yankee rednecks talking about their flashy new boomsticks.

It's a fething gun.
Get over it. I don't know which is sadder, those who are pretending to have a gun and be all manly, or those who DO have a gun so that they can pretend to be all manly.

I'm sure this thread will either end in an all consuming ball of redneck rage-hate or sadly trail off into a conversation about boys and thier toys...

Its hard to explain why people in the US love guns. I do hope you realize that just because you own a gun doesn't mean you are a redneck, but if you are a redneck you most definitely own a gun. I guess since I was raised around them, they are very fun and social, but always treated with deadly respect. Have you ever gone shooting? It really is a blast, no pun intended

Yes, I have been shooting. But that was with a rifle in the desert, and not a fething semi-automatic that many here on Dakka brag about owning.

I was not blasting people for owning guns, I was blasting them for talking about it so much on random threads. This is the attidude that many dakkers seem to have toward guns.

As a fellow Australian I understand where Emperors Faithful is coming from and kind of agree in a sense to the points he makes.

@JEB, I have some guns in a gun safe [complying with Victorian gun safety, which seems to go far beyond most of what America requires for gun safety] and have gone hunting from rabbits to bores and larger animals. I will agree that it has some fun attached to it, but I have discontinued hunting for a number of reasons. I dont have the urge to go out hunting or even have guns. I understand the culture difference but I must say that your 2nd Amendment is really wearing thin, and survivalist groups and self defence claims are unjustified.

I agree there is a place for guns in a social aspect, but there has to be a line drawn and I feel that is Americas down fall.

Im not looking to pick a fight or offend anyone, just curious.

How is the 2nd Amendment wearing thin? I don't quite get what you mean. I personally love guns because I think they are very fun to go out and use. I don't know anyone, other then one of my former roommates, who isn't extremely anal about gun safety and training. And trust me, if they are that anal about it in Texas, its even more stringent everywhere else.

I dislike how its legal to own a firearm, while i do believe how it could be helpful it has more cons then pros.

To clarify what I mean by the 2nd Amendment:
Any American [since no other country can] claim they have "the right to bear arms" as stated in your constitution, and go out with no training, gun safety or purpose for owning a gun and by one for the sake of just having it.

It's jist that (and I'm sure Squig_Herder will agree) that Aussies hear a bit too much about people in America either acidentlly blowing each other up or having some freak go on a mad killing spree. I take it that one such as yourself HAS seen Bowling for Columnbine?

I will neither question nor insult your dislike of firearms, that is your right. I do not, however, find it appropriate to label gun-owners as "rednecks" simply by ownership of certain private property.
I do agree that some of us "yankees" get a bit riled up over the issue and that is mainly due to the anti-rights activists out there and their abuses of law-abiding citizens.

I hope we can all remain civil.

I've said before, and I'll say again that this is aimed at those who consistently trail of in perfectly good threads about the love of thier man-toys ( ) and how big it makes them feel.

I understand completely how many feel compelled to own a gun. I also feel that a lot of people are simple not turstworthy with such a lethal weapon, one that will result in accidents. However the main point of this thread was to ask others to stop going on about thier boomsticks so much. If you like it so much, make a thread about it and stay there.

Just a theory, but I imagine the people who have gun obsessions would merely have obsessions about different things if guns were illegal or undesirable. They are obsessed over because they are available, and like cars, appeal to the male mindset.

No, its anal. As in 'anal retentive'. What is this word 'einal'?

Never mind that Michael Moore films for dramatic effect, and not factual accuracy.

Yes, that is true, but that is all part of personal liberty. You take the good with the bad...

Of course you do, those stories make good news and better stories. I am sure the news doesn't report how for every idiot who owns a gun there are hundreds of safe, intelligent gun owners. Yes, I did see Bowling for Columbine. While I thought it was mildly entertaining, I wasn't overly impressed. I think it is overrated.

Yes, I know, everyone bow to Michael Moore. I think he is clever some of the time, and a jackass most of the time. Trust you guys are gonna wish you had guns when these are set loose by Kevin Rudd...

When you refer to anti-right activists, are you referring to people which wish to change the constitution to fix the loop hole [no offence, but the 2nd Amendment seems to be one of the biggest American legal loop holes] of the 2nd Amendment?

Also, I wish to add, that I feel that the NRA needs to be stripped of its political power, much like the KKK or Builders labours union[?][IIRC, this was an organisation in Australia that gain too much power over infrastructure and politics and was disbanded and outlawed].

I see your point, Emperors Faithful, it is inappropriate to derail threads. Also, I agree that a small portion of Americans (I am sure other nationalities as well) should not have firearms. It is, however, already illegal for felons and the mentally instable to own them.
Violent behavior, as you know, is also strictly prohibited.

@Dogma:

I'm not about to loudly proclaim Michael Moore's godliness concering accuracy. Far from it, I realise that he's no saint. He's not up there with Ghandi or Mother Teresa. (Or even *shudder* Al Gore) But the guy does raise some valid points. And even the media prefers drama to accuracy, no?

BTW. Who told you about our secret? Next they'll be finding out about the crack core troop drop-bears.

Squig_Herder, it is no loophole. It is the right of free Americans to keep and bear arms. Nothing more.
When I refer to the anti-rights groups, I mean any person(s) who wish to strip the rights of others, any right (speech, religion, arms, all of them I hold sacred)

The NRA only works to preserve the right to arms, nothing more. The libel and slander that they have suffered is unfortunate. Needless to say, I support them.

Out of interest, why do you consider the right to bear arms sacred? Is it because it is your right, or because you think it is important to bear arms (if you can see the distinction I'm trying to make)?

I must say that I personally feel that the NRA is almost liable for each and every civilian shooting in the USA. This is because of there complete objection to complete, solid and heavy enforcement of gun control. It seems to be almost no-existent from where I sit. Simple gun checks and proper arms dealers [legal gun suppliers] in the USA would reduce the frequency of the shooting there.

I feel they are abusing there power.
