It's really disapointing but I am finding myself losing intrest in the 40k hobby. Over the past few months my passion for the hobby has been waning and I now find myself wondering if I want to continue with it. I took a break from modeling for a few months (I hardly do any gaming) and when I tried to start back up I didn't find sitting around painting little toy soliers as fun as it used to be. This really saddens me because I still love the models and the story behind the game but I just can't bring myself to sit down and paint and model when I feel there is so much more to be doing. When I sit down at my modeling desk all I can think about is "right now I could be golfing, or going out with some friends, or playing rugby, or going to a movie." I want to be involved in the hobby but I find it becoming more and more dull for me. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

It happens dude.
If you do decide to flog your stuff off, do take the time to see if there's anything you're really proud of. Hobby interest waxes and wanes for most people, and if you come back, you will sorely regret selling off your favourite conversions etc.

Agreed with above post. What helps keep my interest is getting in regular games. Even just once a week helps. I too am a little burned out on the painting and modelling but am slowly getting back to it.

it happens and it doesn't necessarily need a fix. my friends and i played the hell out of 3rd edition with 1-2 games per week for several years. by the end of that, we were all kind of tired of 40k and each of us slowly over about 3 months decided to just take 4th edition off. i restarted this spring and i just talked to a few of my old buddies 2 weeks ago and they were itching to start playing again. one of the few good things i can say about GW is that at least they'll still be there if you decide to take some time off and come back later. you can't really say that about plenty of other minis gaming companies...

I wouldnt sell your stuff. I know a guy who lost intrest and sold his models he got quite a lot about £400 but after that he started to regret it and when his little cousin wanted to start collecting he got back in and really reggretted selling them especaially as he had to start all over again.
Also if you do want to sell them, wait. If you have any quite old classics they could be worth loads inthe future. I bet the WHFB 25th bday model- harry the hammer- will be worth a lot more than £15 in a few decades.
To get back into painting i would start painting a few single models, characters etc. (but not units unless theyre small, thats too muchwork) and perhaps enter one in a Golden Demon, that might spark the hobby flare again.

Best bet I reckon is a clean break for at least 6 months.
You seem to have a fairly busy social life outside of the Hobby, so put the Hobby on the back burner. Indulge the Golf, Rugby, Movie and Socialising side for a while.
Never force yourself to do something you cannot be arsed to do at that point. You only put yourself off it even more.

Well, the GW hobby isn't like working a job, or even regular exercise. It's really ok to step away for a while or even forever if you're not having fun any more. Consider staying involved in the aspects you do enjoy: reading books, posting here, what have you. Many times, something will bring you back in, be it a new edition, a new army, whatever.
To reiterate the above advice, don't sell everything. Do a "No BS" assessment of all the stuff you own. I'd keep anything that's fully painted. I'd get rid of anything you know you won't get to within a a few years. For the rest, keep the stuff you're most invested in (be it emotionally, the most painted) and sell the the stuff that you care the least about and/or can get the most from. Honestly, it's no big deal. I stopped doing Warhammer for like 6 months.
Just take a break, and when you come back, you'll be back into warhammer with a renewed vigor. That was for me, at least.

The lack of gaming could be what's making you lose interest, I haven't played a game in forever because I decided I'd take a break until I got some stuff painted...and I haven't and I've been losing interest more and more myself.
I say just take a break. I wouldn't sell anything, just put it away for a while and do something else that interests you.

Try some other wargames. 40K isn't the only game in the world.
Buy a copy of De Bellis Antiquitatis and two matched armies in 15mm. That will set you back about £40 to £60 depending which armies you choose.
15mm paints up really quickly.
If you hate the game, you can sell them. If you love the game, you can think about moving on to bigger Ancients games, and just expand them.

People take breaks from it. Shoot up until recently (within the last year) I hadnt played or touched 40k in almost 2 or more years. It was just that box that sat in my closet. Itll come back to ya, it always does. At least for me.

Don't force yourself to model and paint. That is a one way ticket to complete killing of interest in the hobby.
You have to want to do it. Like Vindicator 9 said, just play some games.
Or start Apocalypse.
That always seems to keep people interested in the building big armies.

If you hobby just to hobby most of the time, then focus on smaller projects
rather than entire armies. There are lots of "showcase" quality miniatures out
there that you could paint just for the heck of it.

change it up, play a different game, or take an official break. most likely you will regret selling your stuff.
lay off it for a few months, i do that alot, and i always come back. im in a 40k lull as well, like painting it, not so much playing it. itll come back to me in a few months, it always does.

The game has the opposite effect on some people. At least when you hobby you can
imagine how cool it would be to use those models in a game. If you don't like the
ruleset for that model or that game, playing the actual game can be a deterrent.
I've met people who enjoy historical armies, for example, but not necessarily historical
gaming. So they have lovely painted armies, but they do not play the various games
systems that support that army's historical time period.

You could always try going to tournaments but I took a break for a good 2-3 years before getting back and I'm finding myself a lot more serious about the game and liking it a lot more.
Gaming with friends casually is also a great way to stay into it, if you are just doing everything by yourself it can get quite tedious and overwhelming.

Since there are parts of the hobby you are still interested in, maybe you just need to change your painting technique to some more quick and dirty so you can spend time in the other aspect you enjoy.
Or paint with friends, not just other hobbiest (they can be weird).

Try to play on a regular basis, if the does not work you might need a break. DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR MINIS. I have seen time and time again. People leave/come back and they always regret selling their minis and have to buy the stuff all over again.
