Subject: Tau Super Heavy Suit (looking for feedback)
|
 |
Resentful Grot With a Plan
|
I have been working with a friend of my, on a Tau super heavy battle suit, in the likes of Gundam.
We need some feedback on his stats and rules.
we were thinking to make him 400pts.
Let us hear your thoughts, what do you think of it.
WS BS S Front Side Rear I A
2 4 6 12 12 10 2 2
Type: Super Heavy walker
Structure Points: 2
Weapons and Equipment:
2 shoulder mounted weapons:
- 2 twin linked rail guns
2 arm mounted Weapons of the following list:
If a weapon is chosen twice it becomes twin linked.
(or 1 arm mounted twin linked weapon of the following list)
- Heavy Fusion Blaster
- Heavy plasma rifle
- Heavy Missle Pod
- Heavy Burst cannon
Weapon Range STR AP Special
Rail Gun 72'' 10 1 Heavy 1
(submunition) 72'' 6 4 Heavy 1, Large blast
Heavy Plasma Rifle 36'' 7 2 Heavy 1, Blast
Heavy Fusion Blaster 24'' 8 1 Heavy 1, Melta
Heavy Missle Pod 36'' 7 4 Assault 3
Heavy Burst cannon 24'' 6 4 Heavy 5
Disruption pod (as in codex tau)
Special rules
- Deep strike (as rulebook)
- Acute Senses (as rulebook)
-Jet pack (as rulebook)
- (nameless rule) an adjusted version of the jet pack movement rule in the assault phase.
In the shooting phase the heavy battle suit may divert some of its
energy from his weapons towards it's jet pack so it can choose to either:
- Fire all weapons as normal, and don't move in the assault phase or,
- Fire its arm weapon(s) only and move up to 12'' in the assualt fase.
We are looking for proper C&C
Is it worth its points (400)?
Should it cost more? and why?
what about it's weapon options? should we go for 1 twin linked arm weapon?
or go with the tau suit fluff and give the player the choice to pick 2 different or one of the same?
what do you think of the special assault phase movement rule
Thanks for any feedback, it's much appreciated.
Cheers!

You might look at the Eldar titans from Bell of Lost Souls' "Lords of Battle" rules they put out. At first glance, he seems really over priced. AV 12 with two structure points means he falls over to autocannons and the like, and lascannons just rip him to peices. I would recommend AV 13, which probably would make him worth in the 350-400 point range. I might also make him WS 3 with 2 attacks, with the option of having a titan CCW instead of the weapons on one arm for a bonus attack. I always liked the gundam with swords

Tau have shield generators for suits, so I'd think a super heavy would get a void shield, or a force field of sorts. I agree that he's underpowered for 400 points. For 250 points more, you should look at the stompa and mek stompa that orks get for comparison, the ridiculous array of firepower that it has, transport capacity and everything else.

I'd drop the jet pack and just make the vehicle a skimmer, since jet packs are an infantry option. You might just model the whole thing on the Eldar Revenant, only with Tau system names and effects that are within reason.
If you really want the special move-shoot-move rule that jet packs give, then it might to better to think of this SH battle suit as a Gargantuan Creature, and drop the AV for a high Toughness and low Armour save.

Yep. A Revenant by a different name can be a Tau “Intervention” Suit.

Thanks for all the comments,
It's to small to be a Revenant,
In size it should be something like the digga stompa, Knight titans, bright stallion...
I based most of the rules on those eldar ''mini titans'' , the ''jet pack'' is Tau's version of the Agile rule most titans have.
It should not into a sword wielding close combat orientated super heavy suit...that's just not Tau.
The Disruption pod should grant him a 4+ hull down save, unless within a certain range.
We Based it's cost on the other mini titans, more expensive than the Knights, and digga, but around the same price as the Eldar Stallion.
Should we consider taking Front armor 13 side 11 rear 10? together with the 2 structure points and 4+ hull down he should survive long enough.

Should try to go for Macross for a model rather than Gundam. Tau look more like old Macross Rules seem alright, I don't know why they don't actually have any Titans yet. But, if they're mostly taking their ideas from Macross it's probably why. They're about the size of fighter jet planes and can transform between the mecha form, a half-half form and a plane. But giving the weapons and how you wanted it to be Gundam-like, I guess the Verde Buster will probably be the best for it. Obviously you want 1/100 it's the best size for them if you want titans. My Avatar has a few 1/100s in it with some 40k stuff so you should be able to get the scale from that if you're unsure.

I always did like the old Orgus fighter, yet Gundam is my favorite.

Have you thought about allowing it battlesuit upgrades from the armoury? Perhaps giving it X amount of Shield drones to represent it's shields better since that would give it a better ablative armour and take it away from the eldar needs to move to get it's special save. That way it remains a filthy xenos thing with it being unique to the tau

I picture FW making somthing like this someday. Not in the near future, but someday. They seem to like making all sorts of battle suits i'm sure they will one day make a titan sized one.

I think you can find the tau suit on coolmini, thatis where I remember first seeing it. The creator actually auctioned it off.

I'd say AV of 13/12/10 with 1 or 2 void shields. The Disruptions don't help against deep striking chain fist terminators, which seem to be a very popular super heavy killer.
Would help it last a little longer.

I always go for melta/chainfists when facing a super heavy, they're just more reliable than trying to blast at it (with the exception of strength D weapons).
