I was thinking of actually starting to purchase my own instead of using a friends Why is the eldar love so lacking on this forum.
What do people not like about them?
What do people like about them?
I mostly want to play the army for aesthetic reasons ; seems fun to paint.

I love eldar
Pros
Eldar miniatures have a very cool range
Competitivity ranging from Cheesy competitive al the way to friendly and everything in between
Farseers, coolest psykers in the game
Cons
Many eldar models are expensive
All aspect warriors have metal models
Eldar armies often find themselves outnumbered
Eldar have an outdated codex
People like to paint eldar because of the vaying paint schemes, not the same bland color scheme for every model...
I personally didn't get around to painting mine yet...

Yep I also love Eldar. Dont think their codex is outdate tho (at least i dont dare say it due to all the necron etc players).
I bought my Iyanden Eldar army purely for the looks and fluff. However I did check that I could at least win a few games with the army before buying it. Would get boring to never ever win with an army no matter how fluffy or nice it is.

Also, I honestly just want them to pain and mess with Marines are kind of boring to paint.

Eldar certainly aren't outdated. They have a lot of awesome builds and some really cool units. I suppose since they aren't super easy to pick up and play there aren't as many players out there but I still see quite a few and I haven't seen much of this hate you are talking about.
I would want to play Eldar as my next army. Wraithlords are so cool!

-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

Eldar are great on the batlefield. Theyre good in the game and they look striking due to many different colour schemes. Eldar also have a very rich backroung which a lot of people like.

Fear the skittle army! But I think one of the other reasons why people may not like eldar is due to learning curve unlike say SM if you leave your units out in the open or use them against the wrong target you will suffer for it.

I've been playing Eldar for the better part of a year now, but I've liked them ever since I started playing 40k (waaay back in 1995). I guess the primary appeal of the army is the miniatures. They're very slick and futuristic, but also organic-looking with all of their curves. They also look nice painted in bright colors, which you can't say about every army.
Playing the army is lots of fun since you generally have to think about coordinating your units. The units are so specialized and they're very fragile so you can't just throw them at the enemy willy-nilly. However, since everything in the army is so fast and (generally) powerful you can get good results by picking the enemy apart piecemeal.
The main thing I don't like about the army are the point costs. Generally speaking, every unit costs about 10 to 20 percent too much, which is especially galling for the troop choices. 12 points for a Dire Avenger? 8 for a Guardian? Ugh. At least the Fire Prism is nice and cheap.
As for the general fruitiness of the army, my opinion is: if you've got it, flaunt it, baby!

I just like eldar, i dont know why
I hate high elves, wood elves and all other forms of elves, but i like eldar.
I think its their less kiss-ass background
and their less gay models (but still gayish)
and the awesome concept of aspect warriors
People hate them because of their arrogant background, and their fickle and manipulative nature
and the utter homosexuality of guardians. But even i hate that.

Eldar is the only army I really care to play, hate typically comes from...
- Gay jokes due to graceful space elves
- Cone head jokes
- Last minute eldar wins that players never saw coming (36" Serpent moves and 24" Jetbike moves)
- Cover saves out the arse
You get the picture

While I enjoy my Eldar army, I think as a whole they are overpriced (points-wise).
However, I think that my experience with Eldar discussion on this forum has been different from the OP's. I've seen lots of Eldar talk, but it's usually not from extremely competent list-builders or tacticians.
I've seen waaay too many threads on the "banshee vs. scorpion" debate, when neither unit is particularly valuable to most Eldar armies.

Eldar get love, but most people play several different armies. Like many said, eldar are typically outnumbered, and due to terrible ballistic skill the shooty-elves are a lot less shooty than they really should be... But eldar are far from a bad army, a mech eldar army with walkers and wraithlords and things is a beautiful (and painful) thing to behold!

Ive played eldar for the last two years. Went from all infantry walking aspect warrior list, to falcon rush, to walking army centered around wraithguard, to my current list. Right now I run a mech seer council army that looks something like this at 2k. As you can tell, we have lots of armor heavy armies where I play. eldrad yriel 8 locks in serpent 2x5 dragons in serpents 3x5 avengers in serpents with bright lances. 2x3 war walkers with scatter lasers. Im not bothered by jokes about eldar armies, why should I be? The fat greasy neckbeard who makes a point of waddling over to my table just to make gay/conehead/3rd grade jokes about my army can go back to eating cheetos and drinking mountain dew. Least I get laid on a regular basis. My army is pink and silver for gods sakes, I could care less about the manliness of a miniatures game army. And theres a good chance I would crush him if we played. This isnt to say im some god of 40k playing, but the people who run their mouths tend to be the worst players. I find eldar are generally enjoyable on table top. I think they suffer in 5th from a number of issues, primarily overcosting of transports, reliance on transports, and overcosting of troops keeps us from being at the absolute top of the list. However they are an enjoyable list that when played right can dominate people. Ive seen quite a few people play linear 'line up and run at the enemy' 40k against eldar, mine or other players. It rarely ends well, normally with the eldar army dancing around the table, trading blows, and suddenly swinging the game last turn. My dragons and council rarely get out of the tank til turns 4 and 5, and often the longer my opponent thinks they can win the worse its going for them. This sort of setting someone up for a perfect kill playstyle is what I love most with eldar.

I play Eldar as well (started a month or so ago), you must have just missed them
Its like Witch Hunters, Daemon Hunters and Dark Eldar players, once you claim they're rare and so few many of them show up seemingly out of nowhere.

No love for Eldar?
Well, GW is slow updating codices.
The Eldar codex came out shortly (= GW time scale) before the 5th ed arrived.
Its a fact that Eldar was more competitive in the 4th ed than it is now. Automatically Appended Next Post: My Eldar army hits the shelf at the moment.
I'll reconsider it when a new 'dex arrives.

Eldar have some glaring weaknesses in the 5th ed.:
1. Weak scoring (troop) units.
2. Skimmers got nerfed.
3. Random game length in objective based missions.

@Wuestenfux:
1. I wouldn't say weak, but far too costly. Rules-wise, they are pretty decent.
Maybe less than a handful of stat changes.
2. Sort of, but they are still the rave. In addition, Energy Field on the Serpent is getting alot more use since many are taking melta like weaponry these days...pretty much eclipsing the HoloFalcon.
The only 'terrible' change was the change in defensive weapons, but that's not an 'Eldar' only change.
3. Well...it's not so great for last turn rushes, but I for one like it.
It adds so much to the game. Risk/Reward with Eldar is harder, but they are still capable.

Are Guardian squads with Bright lances worth it? point wise they seem expensive. I dunno yet though what I am going to play although Jetbikes for my troops are something I wan to try.
I usually start off with a "core" army and build that compliments that.
Currently the core consists of
Farseer ( fortune , jetbike, etc.. stuff)
Autarch of whupass 165
6 Man Jetbike Squad w/ 2 Shuriken cannons ; Warlock w/ Avenger ; witchblade @ 200
6 Man Jetbike Squad w/ 2 Shuriken cannons ; Warlock w/ Avenger; witchblade @ 200
4 Man Jetbike w/ Shurican , Warlock w/ conceal
