I've noticed that the newer non-slot bases have a dimple in them and something that looks like a serial number on the bottom. Any idea what/why?

The central dimple thats usually got flash poking out the top?

I guess so.

Plastic Injection point is all. No longer cast on the sprue.

I miss the old bases, I find the new bases very *insert homophobic and anti-semetic slander here that the forum tough guys like to use*.

The new bases also seem to be less stern than the old ones for some reason. I can't jam slightly larger tabs into the slot anymore without the base tearing.

They changed over to a different moulding system for the bases a couple of years ago. I believe (going by something posted at the time) that they were outsourced to a company in china.

They're cast individually, instead of on sprues of 4, with that central dimple being the injection point.

I suspect that the intention was to enable them to provide the correct number of bases with sets, rather than the old system that required them to put in bases in multiples of 4. Although if that was the idea, it was a fail, since they seem to be putting them in in pre-set bags instead. I opened a SM Captain box the other day, which included a bag of 10 (seriously, 10???1?) bases.

Interestingly enough, the Space Wolf battleforce came with bases on sprues of 4 again... but these ones have the slot moulded in, with a flat top surface similar to the 40mm and 60mm system, so you just cut out the top of the slot if you need to use it. So it would appear that they've at least partially changed back to the old casting system.

I really liked the old non-slottas.. I could glue a penny or nickel in there for stability. Now, with the dimple, the coin refuses to lie flat and pokes out of the bottom side.

I have switched to using washers.. which cost 7 cents.. aaarrgh! It is a PLOT to cost me more in basing!!!!

I miss the old round bases that had a not-so-wide slot as the usual bases. They usually came with those starter painting sets, but they were great for those special models.

Pick yourself up a small flush cutter (looks like a normal wire cutter, but with the blades perpendicular to the handle) to cut the dimple off on the bottom.

I usually glue a few scraps of something heavy down below, works just as well.

I dislike the bases that have no slut cut in them, but supports for a slot molded into the bottom. Really makes it hard to fit a nickle in there.

The newer bases are quite annoying when it comes to sticking coins in there to help balance a model. It can be done, but not as simple as the old days when there was nothing inside there.

Personally, I blame Jervis,

This is why you should base your models, lol, unless the dimple is so bad it messes up the basing

No sluts? I didn't know they had sluts in bases...

Anywhoo, I also notice that some of my 40mm bases have these holes that are obviously meant for the little peg on the model's underfoot to go in, but by placing them there they look horribly based.

Um, that's what they're talking about. The dimple sticks out at the bottom where they
tended to glue coins to weigh down the base.

This is why my Marines are going to have dark skin. Tired of seeing palefaces all over the Imperium!

More on-topic, I haven't had a problem yet with models falling over so I haven't had to think about what's underneath the base. All the bases I have, minus the Dreadnoughts, have slots, and the Black Reach bases were all in fours. I guess when I can afford to start buying new models I'll take a look at the bases and see what I get. If there are extras, yay ... I'm short a bunch for my Tac Marines!

Not sure what you mean by that... horrible how?

Candroth wrote:...and the Black Reach bases were all in fours.

Yeah, so far as I'm aware, the round slottas never stopped coming in 4s. Some of the fantasy slottas switched to the single cast, though... The Skull Pass minis all had singly cast slottas.
