Does it seem that a lot of gamers(including myself) tend to have the tendency to hoard things? I have been unloading a lot of stuff over the past year and it feels great to have free closet space again. I know that I have seen gamer friends that seem to hoard all kinds of games, from board games to miniatures, that they will probably never paint, and boxes and boxes of terrain that they may never get around to using.

I suspect this is a common trait among gamers.

Do we have the hoarding gene?

Considering how I still have a NES, SNES, Sega genesis that I haven't played in at least 5 years I'd say Yes.

You know, my atari(from early 80's), is still on a shelf at mom's. I suspect it may actually be worth something by now. LOL

I think you're probably pretty dead on. Hobby gamers, be it role playing, war games, ccgs, etc. all seem to have that collector gene as well. I know I have way more 40k than I'll ever be able to field at once.

I for one am certain i have the "hoarding gene". I'm always wanting more, yet i know chances are slim i'll ever get it all done and painted.

I have at this moment awaiting my attention around 2500 points fantasy chaos mortals, 1750 points 40 k eldar, 1000 points 40k tyranids, 800 mkI cryx, full orc bloodbowl team, and i have just started collecting flames of war.

As you can see, way too much too paint. I can't help it.

I had a fully painted 1750 witch hunters army, 2000 points fantasy Tomb kings and previous edition 3000 points chaos mortals + deamons wich i got rid off.

I WILL allways hoard stuff, it's a disease.

Guilty as charged I am afraid.

Although I don't tend to horde un-opened boxes, my main pleasure from the hobby is assembling the miniatures, so I end up with huge, very well put together, grey armies!

I also find it almost impossible to part with a book once I have bought it. My dinning room is more of a library than somewhere to eat.

After getting rid of 3,000 pts of Lizardmen, 2,000pts of Ogres, 2,000 pts of orks, 2,000+ pts of nids, 2,000+ pts of ultramarines, 2500 pts of imperial guard, 2500 pts of eldar, 2500 pts of vampire counts, 2,000 pts of dwarves (all painted - except for the ogres and dwarves, and orks). I also sold off a menoth and cryx army(patially painted), mordheim warband, a ton of 6mm GHQ WWII minatures, and quite a few avalon hill style hex board games. Not to mention the 200 or so heroclix that I sold.

And I still have some 54mm historical stuff to get rid of.(sheesh!)

All of that selling makes for a clean closet and a nice bank account. :-)

I have since started on a raven guard army, 2,000 pts(assembled but not painted), and an ork army 2500+(partially painted but hope to finish next year). And that's all. I am NOT GOING TO BUY ANYMORE, until I finish painting what I have.

GG

edit.. yes I forgot about the books. I am in desperate need of a book shelf to start a library so I can rid of the books in boxes.

I really don't have enough money to have whole armies still in boxes. I don't really havce the money to buy whole armies at once, or giant paint sets even though I would only use about 15% of the paints there. But because of that I keep everything that I have and everything left over (even empty sprues, those actually come in handy for making Cities of Death) so I suppose, yes, I have the hoarder gene.

I know when I got into 40k years ago I HAD to get every chapter approved, White Dwarf, 2nd edition game book, 3rd edition codexes, etc. that had fluff in it to add to the cool dark and gritty universe I wanted to play around in. Now, as they stare at me from my bookshelf I keep thinking "where can I fit another Valkyrie or landraider?"

Gamers do = hoarder gene. If only it were just models...

I have a box of orkz that have to be assembled and painted. From that I learned that I'll never buy full armies again, everything will be done piecemeal. Doesn't help that a friend gave me his box of orkz...

Other then that, I'm more of a procrastinator then a hoarder. I just put off the cleaning up. I have no problems with doing it.

I used to be a hoarder, but in the last year, I've gotten rid of a lot of crap, mostly styrofoam that I sincerely intended to use for making terrain, but never really was going to, three Warhammer sailing ships (30MM scale!), two crappy scratch-built titans and a hundred non-white dwarf magazines. I still have to sleep on the couch, but that's a matter of putting everything in some semlence of an efficient order more than not having enough room. I still am a slob and a procrastinator.

True enough, though I am having to be pretty ruthless at the moment, as I will be moving house before long.

Old army books from Fantasy, old Codecies, none of which are of any use nowadays (previous edition, not older 2nd Ed era) are getting chucked, as are the bits I cannot see myself using.

I've been a hoarder for years, and I haven't been into wargaming for nearly that long. I would always hoard materials for my various craft projects. Sometimes it was wood, sometimes plastic, usually it was metal (either sheet for projects or interesting chunks to form projects over).

Now I hoard for terrain. I have a massive pile of cardboard and foam, not to mention the bins and bags of non-GW gubbins I've scavenged and meticulously stored away, probably never to be used. With all the crap at my place and the stuff I've left with my parents, it would take me years to use it all. By the end of it, though, I could probably cover every table at Games Day.

I am begining to wonder if GW's business model depends on hoarders. I mean if we only ever purchased 1 army at a time and finished it one at a time, they may go out of business.

I guess I'm fortunate - I'm too broke/cheap to hoard.

I do hate getting rid of stuff though. I'll happily GIVE things to friends and family, but getting rid of something is stupid hard for me. I can always come up with some sort of use I could see for keeping some bit of rubbish or scrap. Every couple of years I manage a purge of one sort or another and always feel better for it. It's always inevitible that I'll need one of those things I got rid of within the next 3 months after disposal.

My Dad's the same way. He's about to do one of his annual purges and I have to stay away or I end up with stuff like Occiliscopes and random walnut wood scraps. It's all just so neat : /

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.
