I keep wondering if maybe GW has plugged a leaky hole. For every release we're seen for 5th edition, including 5th edition itself, we've had droves of information, concrete information, well in advance to it's release; Assault on Black Reach, Codex Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Planetstrike, Space Wolves. We had images, stats, rules... Yet here we are only a month away from the Tyranid Codex and we have only the cover art, some fuzzy pictures of a few new models and vague gossip of what we 'might' see in the codex.

So what are your thoughts, do you think GW has plugged the leaking hole(s)?

They did, definitely.
I can't remember exactly how they squashed the leaks but over on Warseer (where most rumours and early pieces of news originate), they've had a couple of discussions about it.

There's still the odd hint to find but this way by the time things are actually released, they don't seem like old news.

Which of course, isn't a good move on GW's part. The playerbase wants to actually know whats coming out. It's not like the videogame industry. You can't torrent a sprue of 'guants. I can't fathom what they gain by being so secretive.

If they did tell us well in advance, it might serve as a form of advertising. Personally, if I was given a timeframe for upcoming releases, I'd set aside a budget so I could buy the models i wanted as soon as they came out.

Some of the leaks came out of play testers, some from foreign translators.

I remember before the IG book came out everyone was psyked for a special rule called TAAAAANK! (the TL one).

But when it came out it was called Bring it down!

I would guess GW put out copies with subtle differences to different people so they would know that if the internet was buzzing about a TAAANK! and not BRING IT DOWN! they could tell where the leak was.

What they gain is more hype, more discussion, and more mystery surrounding it. If people weren't bveggin left and right for information, less people would be interested in the new codex, and less people would buy it. It's almost it's own form of advertising.

This is yet another thing I don't understand about the "new and improved" GW.

Why on earth would a company that's in the business of selling minis "hide" those minis from the target buyers of said minis?
It just seems like a really bad business practice to me.

I think its a bad move by GW. I have no real interest in the new nid codex, this is the first time I've felt this way about a new codex release...

Imagine if film companies did the same, would you bother going to see a film if before its release all you had seen was the poster and heard a few rumours what it might be about, no clips, nothing?

It might of worked with Space Hulk but that was a one off special release, big failure GW...

Perhaps they are also concerned with other companies producing similar models or models to fill the gaps prior to release of the new army?

I don't know, because I think that the release of greens photos and a playtest release of the armybook 3 months prior to release would get far more interest in a number of threads and so on rather than just an amalgamated rumour thread with a blurry picture and some vague references... But then GW don't seem to 'do' the internet or want to.

GW is still making stuff? It's been so long since I have seen any codex/army book rumors that I though they went out of business. Too bad I didn't have the lead time to build up the cash to even buy the new book. However, Forces of Warmachine: Khador is coming out in March I think and I'm already saving my change so I can get the book on release day.

Oh wait, isn't that kind of what my sig is about? I guess I better not use that on SuckupSeer.

They must have cracked down hard alright. Seems a bit pointless to me- I'd still buy things as I wanted, but I'd be able to put money aside for the stuff I REALLY wanted to get if I knew what was coming. I'd say it's partly to do with them wanting to clear out old stock before releasing new stock though. Privateer don't have that problem because they're still a young enough company.

I'll echo the wierd busness practice thing, (what a surprise (is their a GW hater of the month award?)) and add that the more you antisapate a product without knowing whats in the product, the more likely you will dislike the product when you see it due to the let down of building exspectations.
how many have looked at a movie trailer and thought wow!!!! only to see it finally and go, RIP OFF! its the same kinda thing. an example was cloverfelid, it had huge hype, but no info, and was a ok movie but a bit of a let down when it finaly was in theaters.

a few leaks, a few confirmed rumors would work wonders instead of the Iron Curtain.

Er, I disagree. I see like, no hype. I see we have a couple of threads on Dakka here but its minimal.

I don't feel particuarly enthused to buy a new codex or army simply because I don't have any information.
I figure I'll just wait a couple of months after release to get the Tyranid codex so I won't end up getting a copy with typos in it.
This will also give me a chance to find out if I should buy any new units in the codex or if they are just garbage.

I am sadly playing Nids in adepticon this year, so with the codex coming out in Jan, and the tourney being in march, I need to get it right away to tool up my list.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

I will be getting some new mdoels and the codex.

Eventually.

If I had some info, I would be saving copiously for the codex and new models, in addition I would be buying old models I thought may be a good addition with the changes.

As things stand, I will just buy a little bit over a long time, instead of a medium amount in preparation and a large amount upon release.

Honestly, the only reason I will be buying anything is because I already have quite a good force of 'Nids. Even then it will probably be "Book, Trygon, be back in a month for more", as opposed to if there were more rumors, it would probably be something like "Gaunts, Carnifex, Warriors, be back when it is released."

It's understandable how leaks can come from play testers and translators. I just hope that GW doesn't get so wrapped up in keeping things locked down that rules don't get thoroughly play tested. Imagine what codex creep would be like without thorough play testing.

I agree. Building hype get's everyone excited and can increases sales. Nothing like releasing a product no one knows is coming and then wondering why it's sales numbers are horribly low. GW does not have any viable means of putting "the word" out there to its customers other than it's website and WD. Rumors and leaks create buzz in the entire community. Solid rumors = Free advertising.

After thinking about this a bit more, I wonder if GW puts the lid on things so that it won't have people being dissapointed in the actual product when they find it isn't the all powerful blow 'em all away army or unit everyone said it was.
Maybe they figure on making up the profit on a new product a month or two with word of mouth on the actual product after it comes out.
Kind of out there as an idea, I realize, but maybe.

Hi

When I worked at GW, Marketing tended to get the year in advance (Calendar Year). Even they could only give confirmation for the next 3 months as sometimes things changed quickly or drastically.

There was a number of times that things got bumped for months or longer.

We were also not supposed to talk too far ahead of possible releases. One mind set was that if everyone was getting excited or holding back their cash for something coming out 6 months or a year from now then the newer releases would suffer.

Mind you I would like to know at least 3 months in advance what is coming out as it does make sense to at least promote what they can. I have been shocked at how little I can find on the Nids.

I can kinda, sorta see why GW holds things back until they are absolutely sure on release dates and pricing. Hell, many of us were giving FFG flack for the delays of Rogue Trader and other supplements. If we know about it in advance, and it gets pushed back, we bitch just as much.

So really they are screwed either way.

That being said, it wouldn't hurt to throw us a bone every now and then.
