I don't play fantasy, never did. But I know a source for cheap minis when I see one.

I heard yesterday the new fantasy will break all precedent and come with Orks vs VAMPIRES.

But then I found out I misheard and it's Orks and Empire.

Anyone know for sure?

I don't know.. but a starter box with lots of easy to get empire troops would be quite attractive imho ;D

I heard Orks and Empire. That is the standard fantasy flagship I think. Orks vs. Vampires would be unprecedented and awesome. I think they choose the empire and orks because they have the average stats and no rules that are too funky. I do not think demons or undead would ever be in the starter box because they ignore too many of the core game rules.

Big enough to have a fall down template. Yup, that's me!

Is this about the new edition starter set?

I do not think demons or undead would ever be in the starter box because they ignore too many of the core game rules.

And because they are too threatening for many parents just contemplating getting their young kids into this hobby. Orcs and Empire have been starter armies before and they still make sense.

My guess is Orcs vs Empire, as it's one of the more common themes. In the very least, Orcs is seemingly likely in the starter set (seeing as often times Orcs is one of the first new Army Books out, and it helps to give the new edition momentum if the starter set also comes with a new book). If Orcs are involved, I could see them making:

1) Orcs v Empire.
2) Orcs v Dwarves.
3) Orcs v Beastmen.
4) Orcs v Skaven.

Orcs v Empire and Orcs v Dwarves because they're pretty common. Orcs v Beastmen because it'll be a "new" rulebook when 8th Edition comes out. Orcs v Skaven because it might still be considered new enough / this might be when a "second wave" hits shelves.

I dont think GW will make them bad guy vs bad guy though

Though i can dream about new High Elves in starter set ... ( i dont like the current plastic spearman or archers )

Forever alone

I think that Orks vs Empire would be the best mix. You have a human faction and a monstrous faction, as well as a good faction and an evil (well, more Chaotic Neutral) faction.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Orks/Empire.

It's like Orks/Marines - simplest forces in the game, easy to learn the game with.

Orcs v. Bretonnians.

Yeah. I said it. You get an infantry heavy army facing off with an elite knightly order.

Slap in the Seven Knights scenario and a plastic trebuchet kit in there--bam. You got a best seller.

They've done Orcs VS Empire before. This time they need to do something different, like Wood Elves VS Beastmen.

I don't really see Wood Elves and Beastmen, just because of the fact that Wood Elves would be kind of a difficult starter army to do well I'd think.

I'm guessing the latter,

I've heard rumors of plastic Boar Boyz in the box as well.

Imagine getting this and Skull Pass.

Orc and Goblin Army in 2 boxes.

I want Orks just for plastic Arrer Boyz.

Starter sets are all about pitting two iconic races against one another. Empire versus Orcs it is once more.

As long as the Boar Boyz are released in a separate box as well (unlike a certain Deff Kopta unit), my Snakebite friend will be happy.

That's where I've always felt GW dropped the ball.

Making starter sets with each iconic race pairing, with plastics and a mini rulebook?

I'd be very surprised if that DIDN'T sell like hotcakes.

I mean, it really wouldn't be that hard. We've got:
Beastmen/Wood Elves.
Dwarves/Orcs
Warriors of Chaos or Daemons/Empire
Skaven/Lizardmen
Dark/High Elves
Bretonnians/Vampire Counts
The only two that I can't really think of, off the top of my head, are Ogres and Khemri.

The thing is Empire vs Orcs is a obvious "good vs bad" and the two sides look different. Dark/High elves are too similar, Beastmen/Wood Elves isn't quite good vs evil enough. Dwarves vs Orcs is good, as is Chaos vs Empire. Skaven vs Lizardmen isn't "good guys vs bad guys" enough as both sides are pretty monstrous. Bretts vs VC could work.

It's far better to pair off two factions that people can recognize and that are easy to incorporate into a tutorial scenario or two. Blocks of infantry, cavalry and the odd warmachine work better than armies of skirmishers.

#the prbolem with that is its already been done, id be more excited if it were something new. vampires, tomb kings, beasts of chaos, etc. the only reason i ever buy the box is for the cheep minis. and though i have a empire army (dont heckle so loud) im not to intrested in a new box unless it comes with steam tank and or hipogriff (witch will never happen.) as for orcs, pretty much the same, ive gobos, but im not intrested in orcs unless its cheep feral orcs, and that only because i would want them for fans, not for myself. at this point the smatest thing i think GW could do forthe fans (not its pocket) is release eh box set with an army thats coming out also in 2010. not good buisness practice but great for fans. (so it will never happen)

I am REALLY excited about plastic boar boyz! Finally!
The starters keep getting better too, so this should be good. We'll see what the empire stuff ends up looking like, I might paint the knights for the fun of it.

BFSP was the dream starter for me because I played both armies, but seeing as it seems three in a row cater to my greenskins you'll hear NO complaints from this Warboss.

mind you im looking at it from a vet perspective, and really the boxes are targeted at new people coming to the game so i guess orc/empire will be ok, but it will mean i have no use for the box.

The problem is that then everybody can get the better part of a full army for the price of a starter set (trade the other army for a second set of your chose one.)

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

Ogres will be done pre-8th edition.
Tomb kings are either last army of 7th ed, or first army of 8th ed.

The big rulebook will be released before the box set (So TKs are unlikely to be in the box set)..

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also problem for Empire is that apart from the cannon, mortar combo, the knights and characters they have the entire line in pretty decent plastic.

Your chicken bones are 50% correct

For the Empire i'd expect simplified versions of current releases and the new knights will be up to the current Chaos knight standards.

I 'm really hoping for the basic empire infantry / crew etc. that they bring back the poofy shirts!
The lack of poof on the state troops was saddening.
