I think the power armour is a good move, the other guy was cool but this fits better with fluff. But maby im just more of a fan of big suits of armour than big mutants

Yah, I did spend a long long time on that particular mini' so am equally reservered and reluctant to retire him. But, as you said he didn't really fit the gangs profile and he is awkwardly tall 2 inches + and in Munda rules that qualifies him as "large target"...bad mojo.
I'm sorry. Was your unit too awesome looking to survive for long on the battlefield? Are you new to the hobby or something like that?

Ignore that comment. I lose most of my games anyway.

Wow, the armoured suit is a really good idea.

I might steal that myself, :-) although the Orgyn is ace. I never seen anything like it before. I would keep it if I was you. Just use it as a renegade unit or something like that.

Also, if you need a different kind of suit ... there are some nice armoured suits in the Incursion / West Wind range that might fit the bill.

So, as promised I dusted off the old SLR and took advantage of the 5 mins of sunlight that this miserable Melbourne day had to offer and came up with the following:

Kommandant

So the big guy is based and ready for a shelacking! Unfortunately the weather down here has been gak so actually painting the guy is delayed until I can catch a break. Or is it worthwhile forking out for a painting light? If anyone has one laying about gathering dust I would love to sort something out.

Stuka - Heavy Stubber Extraordinaire

Stuka is your entry level heavy, for those who don't play any of the munda flavours the Heavy Stubber can be a total tide turner - that is of course if it doesn't jam, and man do they jam! The model is a Kasrkin Flamer that has been bored out using the dremel and fitted with the heavy stubber from an imperial army tank sprue. I pondered the idea of making more "assault flavoured" by shortening it, but I became quite fond of how heavy this heavy looks. The ammo roll on the back is a grenade launcher drum that has had the bottom half smoothed and notched to match the one loaded, I also used some green stuff to make straps to hold it in place.

And now for something a little more expensive...

The new toy! I picked this baby off ebay.com.au from a trader named "princess trade" for about 150 all up, that includes retractable line (great for keeping moisture to a minimum) dual action airbrush and air compressor with tank. I don't like promoting people without getting paid for it, but as a seller princess trade have been one of the best I have dealt with. Ordered on Wednesday, paid on Thursday at my house on Friday. Which is totally ninja.

Basically, I did some heavy reading before picking this up and without going into specifics (because there are scores of guides here on dakka) you need to make sure your air compressor has a tank at least, this ensures a constant and manageable stream of air which the single compressors simply cannot do. As I said I will avoid the technical babble, but feel free to drop me a pm if you have any queries about the setup.

Needless to say my weekend has been spent going over the tutorials available here and on the many users blog sites. I never had an appreciation for how rich the knowledge base and talent was on this site until now. Thank you all sincerely.

Stay tuned for updates and take care until next time.

Regards,

Archibald Jack

Thank you for the kind words. I have just spent the last few hours at the local Bunning (Hardware Store) buying up simple green, plastic tubs, extraction fans and micro drill bits for the next big project.

I am going to attempt to make a budget spray booth that will pipe airbrush overspray out your window! Oh, that and I am going to try simple concetrate for the first time to strip back some AT-43 figs...could be interesting.

Jack, it's good to have you posting again! Your gang is easily one of my favorites on Dakka. I love how the overall gang looks is very uniform across all the models, yet the work on the individual figures obviously has alot of detailed work. I know I commented previously, but the Kommandant is maybe one of my favorite conversions ever, at least as far as human models go. I'm glad to see you added the barrel back on the shotgun. Looks great! While the finished product is totally different, one of my favorite gangers was inspired heavily by your Kommandant. You can check it out here if you like.

Now that the high praises are out of the way, please accept a bit of criticism. I really, really think the heavy stubber barrel is too long for the model. I can appreciate you personally like the look of it, and that's ultimately all that matters. However, I feel I should give my honest opinion, so take it for what it's worth. I think it would look much more aggressive and suitable for the model if the stubber was a bit more compact.

Anyway, I hope you keep posting updates and I'm excited to see what you do with the new airbrush setup!

Browsed through the topic and have to say I like it greatly! The concept, parts, sculpting and painting - all are top notch. Makes me look at my own as rough and crude =/
I have some questions 'bout them if you don't mind:
- on the guy with 2h axe you used some material other then GS to make visor and spine plate - whats that?
- how do you paint this awesome googles!?!?!

That is an amazing concept - absolutely love it. You have made me want Ogryns for the first time ever. Also - hellgast eyes pulled of perfectly

Love the chief too, I think it was cool when he had a cigar, only the most awesome person ever smokes a cigar while wearing a gas-mask. Normal people can't even figure out how it would be done, but he knows, cause he's just that awesome.

Your juves have too authorative (sp?) heads IMO, they look like officers, not expendable chaff.

Ahem.

I know it's a few months on, and some of you may not need the answers to these questions any longer - but here goes.

Your juves have too authorative (sp?) heads IMO, they look like officers, not expendable chaff.

I totally agree with this point. Even before painting them the heads resembled the Kommandant's way too much, so I sourced some new heads from SOTR (Secrets of the third reich) from West Wind Productions. It is still a field officers cap but they have no breather or mask. So, that in turn should add another level to the Hierachy of the team in that when you're a juve you get the hat and splash mask, then as a ganger a helmet and breathing mask then finally as a senior a breather with cartridge.

- on the guy with 2h axe you used some material other then GS to make visor and spine plate - whats that?

That stuff is Milliputt. It dries much harder than GS and unlike GS can be sanded and filed down although it can be tricky to work with and needs to be kept wet when sculpting, similar to potter's clay. As a tip, if it gets stuck in somewhere it's shouldn't be it's best to remove it with a wet bamboo skewer (or toothpick)

- how do you paint this awesome googles!?!?!

So, you start with a nice base colour like blazing orange, one dry you accentuate the red tones in the corners using a thin coat of watered down red wash - then once dry you add the bright yellow centre using a piqued colour like bad moon yellow.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade and Killzone should be proud !

Thank you so much for the kind words - I borrowed very heavily from both these visual themes so it's worth noting that this team is more of a homage to Jin Roh and the Helghast than anything else.

So, how is the current status of your project?

It is still very alive an well. Some models are being retired, such as my first Ogryn, Ahab and the Armored Walker. Unfortunately as much as I like them individually they fail to make grade for varying reasons. The Ogryn is simply too massive for Necromunda - that and his presence in a crew such as the Hunde De Kriegs seems out of place. Ahab is similar - that and a Van Saar who strives to engage in hand to hand is not a Van Saar at all. And as for the walker the model whilst very funky is a really, really poor cast - I believe when Rackham took to cheaper option of casting vinyl painted acrylic they cheated themselves out of that crisp detail and finish that resin and metal provide. Unfortunate really, but probably a major contributor to AT43 taking on water and capsizing.

Consequently, if anyone has any interest in taking up or finishing any of the above projects shoot me a message and we'll talk shop.

Did anything ever come of 'Joe's Salvage' and 'Nico Rex'?

I will be submitting the basic outlines of the snap together towers to be CNC'ed by a cat over in Bayswater, who fortunately is also a tabletop player (so he cuts discounts for tabletop projects) from there it'll be a few more months of plasticard and detailing until I have them rotocasted. I am researching a DIY option for a rototmolder and am very excited about getting into terrain molding - so much so I created my own site to document the process and hopefully once I have all my ducks lined up will be able to sell the pieces to people in need of affordable, practical and professional looking terrain solutions.

The URL is still in a beta stage but there is a brief about us, and contact us section up and running should any of you require further info. Click on the link to visit Spire9

Additional projects include:

A new Ogryn - this one however is an AUGryn, it is in principle exactly the same as the AT43 walker, but is a converted incursion HMG ape, which I have been told are a gem to work with, and are of a much higher cast standard. Which is all that counts really. I am yet to receive the model from the UK but am keen as mustard to get working on that. So stay tuned for pics.

A new Heavey - Lascannon! whilst excessive and totally impractical it is still a sweet piece of kit to have for base attacks, and does come in handy when it's a scenario where you need to knock out a building, Ogryn or other High Toughness Beasty. That and it's a sweet piece of kit! Check it out:

Well that's all from me at the moment. I will be keeping you all in the loop from now on in as I as I will have alot more time to work on these projects over the next few months.

Thanks again for tuning in.

Literally was thinking about this today. It's always nice to see your blog updated, it's a real inspiration. Shame about the Ogryn and Ahab, you really did put a lot of time and effort into each of them. Of the two, I feel the Ogryn's a greater loss, he had so much character, and so much time put into him. Ahab I liked the concept of, but I never felt he fitted into the gangs aesthetic. As for the armored walker; I never warmed to it in the first place, and am looking forward to see your take to the APE's.

If I may give some constructive criticism about your heavy there; I assume he's still a WIP, but one thing that's really standing out to me is the size of the trigger hand. It's huge, and looks ungainly when compared to the rest of the miniature. Maybe if you integrated it into the arm, you could pass it off as a 'one size fits all' bionic hand.

Glad you're back, your necromunda always brings a smile.

Thanks for the welcome back. Yeah the lascannon is still very much a WIP - being it was salvaged from a Space Marine he still has one of those uber mittens attached. I will most likely burr it down and start a new with a padded Cadian hand for anatomy's sake.
