It's these kinds of blogs that really inspires and furthers our hobby. Fantastic work all around and it's very motivational. It amazes me that after 20+ years in this hobby, the thought of using an airbrush for these models only occurred to me in the past couple of years. It's amazing the level of quality that can be achieved with this piece of equipment.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Thanks kenny and the Baals are on the way. I built and magnetized a full Baal kit a few pages back in this blog. I've yet to start painting it though. I have another Baal still unbuilt in the box which I might assemble before painting the two of them. I'll get around to them eventually

It's a shame you dont dig the Storm Raven - i'd kill to see it painted in your style!
Regarding the yellow helmets earlier in the thread - I dont mind them personally, I think they look nice.
Fantastic work, I've actually bookmarked the thread just to come back again and again to see it.
Ps - you weather the vehicles but not the marines themselves, right?
Pps: are you doing edge highlites on the marines?
Thanks and feel free to copy what you see. I've copied various methods and painting styles from other fantastic painters as well and eventually come up with my own style. I think I"ll do a Storm Raven eventually but right now my blacklog of models to paint is too big so I'm going to finish off what I have at the moment and then think about buying and painting more. Yup, I only weather the vehicles right now though I'm starting to do a bit of dry brush around the feet of my marines when I'm doing the bases to simulate a little bit of dirt there. For edge highlighting I use sparingly since I'm not a huge fan of the effect. I used it a bit more in my DC since their armor is all black though.

I doubt there is much if any blending going on. Eggroll uses and airbrush for the reds and the black on the Death Company.
'What is it exactly you think the airbrush is best at lol? Here's a hint, starts with 'B', ends in 'lending'.
Heh, yup Tom's got the right idea.

Thanks Sarigar. I think it's mostly past the last few years that the artistic part of the hobby has really grown and expanded. I'm always amazed by the difference in paintjobs and model details when I look at the older models from the 80's and 90's and compare them to what we have now. The technology for model making has definitely come a long way since and with that the painting techniques and methods has as well.

Thanks! Small break between painting and decided to build some models tonight. I ended up doing a honor guard squad for Mephiston...more details below... But first, here are some models I built before that still need priming and painting Chaplain w/ Jumppack, Terminator Chaplain, Librarian Sanguinary Guard...I still have an unopen box of these to make 10 in total, think I'll wait to build the other 5 before starting on the whole group. I'm also leaving their wings off till the end. All the armor I've been slowly building so here's what's included - 1st box: fully magnetized baal pred, landspeeder, bike, attack bike; 2nd box: lascannon pred, autocannon pred and razorback. Finally my honor guard for mephiston. These are from the DA veteran squad box and since Mephiston wears robes, these guys will work well with him. The banner is from the fantasy empire general box which fits well here for the honor guard for the lord of death. Did tons of chopping to put it in the hands of a marine with a somewhat proper pose. I also used a spear head from a dark elves on cold ones box since the empire standard originally came with the grim reaper holding sigmar's hammer. Had to chop that off, drill and pin the spear. Was nerve racking trying to drill a hole in the spear banner pole that's maybe 1mm bigger in diameter than my drill bit. Also had to scrape off the sigmar's comet from the shield as well. Also spent a long time cutting off all the DA specific iconography though some areas with just a general sword symbol I kept since it's more universal.

Altough the honour guard look very cool, I'm afraid that Mephiston can't join them dude. He's counted as infantry, not an independent character which means that he can't join any squad at all. You must always have him as a single model/"squad".

Thanks Lenny though the poles isn't my fault, it was designed that way I swear! Actually I had to double check the pic on GW's site and it seems it is the way the kit goes together. Anything of mine that doesn't look right is solely the fault of GW's.
Thanks usukgoose. An airbrush kit doesn't need to be that expensive and I'm quite sure there are some cheaper kits on ebay that would work just as well.

Yup, that's fine. I just wanted a reason to include the DA vets in my army without it looking too out of place and their robes seem to fit Mephiston. I don't actually play the game so it's all good to me if he can't join them.

Good stuff! Glad lots of people are getting into the airbrushing side of things as I'm sure it'll improve your enjoyment of the hobby. For a creamy white it would be tricky, you can try a white primer followed by a medium brown and then a creamy white with white highlights?

Yup though since I don't play, it's not unlikely to assume that I didn't know. Anyhow, I listen to a ton of podcasts while I paint so I did know awhile ago when people were doing the BA codex review about how he can't join squads.

Hey Eggs,
First, a suggestion, I really think a few tufts of green static grass would really help contrast the minis, really minimal though, just a touch. I have a similar if more terracotta basing scheme, I really like how the greens/dried yellows interact with the red.
Second - How long would you say it takes you to complete a piece, squad, tank? If you could, an estimate on the airbrushing and then brushwork after. I am very curious as you seem to be able to pump out a completed squad a week, I'm wondering what that timeframe actually represents in hours, as I assume you also manage to go to work and make eye contact with your GF once in a while lol!

I actually thought about adding some grass to the bases but I personally don't find static grass very appealing or easy to work work. Also, since the BA's homeworld is suppose to be Baal which is more of a harsh barren world, I figured the less grass the better.
For the squads, I think they're around 3-4 hrs per model? I started the two ( DC and assault) back in early Dec and managed to get a lot of painting in during the xmas break. For a tank, I can do it in about 5-8 hours depending on amount of detailing. I'm pretty good at managing my time and my work hours are the standard 9-5 so things are good and I do do more than make eye contact with the gf

Glory to the Twelfth! Glory to Angron!
"Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls. The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Thanks. Your terminator looks great, wish I was able to pick up a set of Space Hulk when they were out. For the Sarg's sword, It's airbrushed starting from black to enchanted blue to ice blue to white with some variations in between. Then the reverse on the blade edge. Finally the edges where picked out with a brush in white.

Thanks. There's plenty of good video tutorials on youtube that goes over basic operation of the airbrush. I also recommend the dreadnought tutorial by miniature mentor which is $25 download but totally worth it. Make sure to post your progress!

Ha, don't melt your BA! You can always strip it and start over. My first models weren't that great either but persistence and practice paid off and got me to where I am now. I'm sure if you spend the time, you'll see the improvements.
