Loving the OSL on the power weapons, will be something I try when my new airbrushes arrive next week, maybe mix it up with my new lighting effect over metal blades. How many Stormravens you planning!! I think we're all going to be following Tom's photoshop mods though!

Yeah, I never changed much when I moved over to an airbrush. I actually built my own spray both using a large opaque plastic bin with a hole drilled in the end and a large 120mm computer fan installed to pull air out but been too lazy to set it up everytime I use the airbrush. I'm not too keen on the new storm raven and with all the models I still have left to paint, I'm going to hold off from buying one for now. I'm definitely picking up a dreadnought kit though so I can build a death co dual talon dread! Tom's photoshopped version is definitely looking better than the stock one so once I do buy the kit, I might try and build it like in his pic.

Quick update for tonight...finished off the sergeant model by doing the 2nd company banner on his back. Some of the proportions are a bit off but overall i'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Banner looks great, as does the sarge. I would maybe suggest though that you think about doing the wings with beige/brown or grey shadows instead of blue. Or even give them a go in black! I find blue is very tough on white in terms of transitioning from one to the other, whereas the other tones are more forgiving as they look more like natural shadow if you know what I mean?

P.s - downloaded the dread vids, AWESOME! And thanks for the pics of your set-up, I feel much more at ease about doing it in the house now!

I'll look into doing a different base colour for the winged shoulders in my next batch. Glad to hear you like the dread tut, it's got tons of great airbrush techniques as well as intro into using oils for weathering. Also, the airbrush indoors is only good if you're doing it in small quantities and using acrylic based paint. I have ran into the problem of getting red soles on my white socks once in a while after a long painting session but my furniture seems fine.

Some great work here.

The colours are nice, clean and crisp and that banner seems to have come out well.

Good to know bud! the only fabric things I have nearby are the seat covers on the kitchen table and 1 chair, the rest is leather and wood, but thank god you mentioned it so I can cover them up just in case!

btw- http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/342341.page

Any advice on an iwata studio power lite vs power pro?? I am sold on having a smaller, quieter airbrush specific compressor after our conversations...

I've ordered an Iwata Studio Smart Jet, based on noise and size (and they have to ship it to Peru), the advice I had was that it was the best for my requirements, living in an apartment, not too much space etc. I'll let you know how it goes, should arrive next week.

@ Eggroll - like the banner a lot, nice details

I'm hesitant to butt into a discussion between such painting greats, as I'm still fumbling through the slow process of learning the airbrush, haha I received a Smart Jet compressor for Christmas though, and I've got to say that it's definitely small and quiet. I can hear my TV at a reasonable volume when I have the thing running, and I live in an apartment and have had no complaints. It's certainly been powerful enough to handle everything I've demanded of it so far, but again, my knowledge base so far as that goes is pretty limited.

I like the sergeant quite a bit, however, i'm confused about the OSL on his backpack? Is the skull meant to be glowing or is there a piece that isn't yet attached?

I've also grabbed the miniature Mentor vids on your recommendation, can't wait to try them out, I bought their first one (the rackham wolf) and loved the content and quality

There's no OSL on his backpack. It's just metallics so it's probably just that and the lighting that causing it to look like it's glowing. Enjoy the MM vids, definitely some of the best instructional vids out there.

These are beyond stunning Eggroll. They're quite simply the best marines I've seen in a very long time. Each and every single marine is jawdropping, but what gets me is the quantity you put out. Normally it's either quantity or quality, but you're the exception to the rule.

It's like an assembly line of awesome of which I am very jealous!

More please

I just finished up the miniature mentor vid, awesome sauce, very nice recommend and something I'd push on anyone looking to learn hobby airbrushing.

BUT

I hate it when they don't finish the model. They did this for the Uncle Meat sculpting tutorial too. They show a finished piece and you expect to see it all the way through, but they end up stopping before the end without really telling the client that beforehand.

That being said, it did cover everything I wanted to learn from it, just would have been great to see him work freehand and 'normal' painting too!

BTW I'm pretty sure the Sarge's power pack is overloading

Thanks vent! Glad you like it. I always recommend getting an airbrush and learning how to use it if anyone's interested in doing the same in terms of quantity and quality.

Ah, did you get a sub to MM? I had one a year ago so I never saw anything past the Festus tutorial. After you see a few, they're mostly the same though I'm thinking about getting the speed painting one which looks really interesting.

I just realized the pic of the backpack and the blue glow in the centre. That's actually from the lighting and the glare. His backpack is perfectly normal

Finally managed to finish off my whole squad and take pictures. I'm happy with the end result though I think I"m going to stick to doing blue eye lenses for yellow helms from now on instead of greens which doesn't have as much contrast. I'll also post some pics of my whole army up to this point soon!

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

The yellow doesn't have quite as nice a finish as the rest of the model, I know Its a difficult colour but it lets down what are otherwise truly beautiful figures! Sorry if that sounded harsh...didn't mean it to. Keep up the great work though!

Looks fine to me - in fact, looks MORE than fine!

The contrasting helmets on Blood Angels don't sit well with many, but I'm a big fan!

I'm with imperial monkey. The yellow just seems to bright/crispy and out of place as the rest of the model is pretty muted. I think it draws away the atention from a otherwise supergreatomgcool model.

Yeah, looking back if I were to do it again I'd try to get more contrast between armor plates and detailing items. Oh well, I'll keep that in mind for my next assault squad. Thanks for the feedback.

As promised, here are some army shots. Took me awhile to take everything out of my display case and setup. I still have a ton of models to paint. My display case right now has 3/4 levels taken up by my BA army. Might have to buy a new display case soon for the newer models.

Truly a spectacular army. I'm feeling inspired to ...copy you basically

It's a shame you dont dig the Storm Raven - i'd kill to see it painted in your style!

Regarding the yellow helmets earlier in the thread - I dont mind them personally, I think they look nice.

Fantastic work, I've actually bookmarked the thread just to come back again and again to see it.

Ps - you weather the vehicles but not the marines themselves, right?

Pps: are you doing edge highlites on the marines?

I doubt there is much if any blending going on. Eggroll uses and airbrush for the reds and the black on the Death Company.
