You would think they would research to do an article on their own figures.
The bit about the first appearance of the Legion states the photo shows original plastic marines painted as LotD where as they are in fact original metal figures that I'm sure were released to be used as such (I still have a couple of them...).
Can anyone else remember them and confirm this or has my memory gone with age?

The original LotD were a paint job on the original beakies, way back when. I think actually, it may have been just someone mucking about with painting bones and flames onto a beaky for blanchitsu/Eavy metal.

I'm fairly sure the early LotD had bits of the old plastic skeletons glued onto the plastic beakies too to add to the skeletal/flame theme, but yes they were just someone messing around with the plastic marines. The metal figures came years later

That pic shows a few plastic beakies and a few generic metal models mixed together and painted in LotD colours.
I've got a slightly larger, clearer pic from a Predator advert from issue 112.

Excellent, yes, the metals in the pictures, like the last guy with the Elvis quiff and skull shoulder, were part of the range of metals, which included a lot of weird and wonderfuls... I used to have a little metal beakie from that range who had two powerfists and was crouching down like his piles were acting up, also a marine with a shuriken catapult and one with a weird hood and powersword.
But I deffo saw LotD looking marines before that article.

I'd agree with MGS here in that I'm sure they were in an article in WD when the main SM minis available were the original beakies and it was just a paint scheme. I may even still have the issue in the loft somewhere. This was probably in the days of WD being a generalist hobby magazine covering all kinds of stuff rather than just a GW sales pitch.

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman |

Not sure, they painted a mix of metal and plastic figures in LotD colours but they were not specific scuplts for this purpose. Perhaps you are thinking of the range done for 2nd edition seen here.

Check out this page- http://www.solegends.com/citrt/rt101spacemarines.htm (hope link works as doing this on my mobile phone). Its the new Space Marine ad from the same WD as the original LotD article, although it doesn't say some of them are actual LotD figures it certainly made people want those figures to use as them (me included) due to the way they were painted. (I still have Meredith and Newmar)
