Subject: Lucas' Legion of the Diddely Damned - First Member: Pedro of the Damned
Hey everyone,
I've been playing warhammer for about four years, but I have a MAJOR problem where I cannot stick to one army so as a result I have never really had an army of my own during this four year period and I can't even say I've completed a squad of my own yet :O
But now it is time for that to change. I've always liked pushing myself to start unique projects and I've never really been content with plain armies. However, this is probably the main reason why I've never gotten anything done :(
While I haven't had much practice painting or converting I like to think of myself as some what of a sculptor so hopefully this will help with my army building.
Enough history on me though, I've decided to make a Legion of the Damned army which I will be using either the Space Marine or Space Wolf codex to represent. I plan to keeep my options open because I haven't really made a list yet. If I do use the Space Marine codex I plan to make a sternguard drop pod army so the first addition to the army is my Pedro Cantor count as.
So here is Pedro: **Still a WIP**
A few notes on the model: I know that he is more skeletal than he should be for legion of the damned since they are supposed to be ethereal beings, but I wanted to add my own twist to the army and they will all be quite skeletal. I was hoping for the look where his chest armour has been blown away and his rib cage is exposed. I'll be painting it in a glowing green. The weapons correspong with Pedro's, but I feel like the storm bolter is a little out of place and could be converted more or replaced. I am aware that there are some mouldlines and large gaps such as the one between the torso and the storm bolter arm, but those will soon be fixed as it is a WIP. I still have to put the greenstuff to him and add in the flames and bone iconography.
Just looking for opinions before I continue working on him.
The bits I used are probably pretty straight forward, especially the body.
Thank you in advance,
Lucas

@Luna - I was going for the "Alas Poor Yorrick!" look, but not that you pointed it out, I really like the idea of it being his own head. Very cool idea. Thanks!
@Munch - Hopefully my jolly thread title wasn't too misleading for the scary stuff in here
@Qualude - Thanks! I really hope so too....:O

First thing that crossed my mind when I saw it was the Yorrick bit. I really like the looks of the model, though I'm curious to see how you handle the chest area. The skeleton looks a bit like it's swimming in the armor at one glance, but I look again and it seems right. Interested in seeing what it looks like all dolled up
I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

@1-Up - Thanks! Someone over on Warseer suggested that I sculpt some flames inside the chest around the rib cage so I might try that out to avoid the emptiness in the torso. Either way I'll be filling it in somehow with greenstuff.
@Nintendoeats - Thanks! Sorry, afraid I can't say I've played any Sam and Max games before.
@Lord Shag - Thanks, I really like your McDonald's orks. Very funny!
Any suggestions on the Storm bolter? I'm not really a fan of it but can't really think of any better options to use as Pedro's Dorn's Arrow.
Thanks

the model looks great but one thing for you, isnt the space marines rib cage a solid mass of bone because of the implants they have? i might be wrong but im sure i read it in the sm codex!

Just out of curiosity (I don't know the background for the Damned) why would Pedro carry Dorn's Arrow?
Why not give him his own weapon?
Spear of the Righteous
Blade of the Eternal
etc.
A Nemesis Force style runic weapon painted to look spectral would be an AWESOME addition... and then just mount a storm bolter to his wrist (like the GK's)
But like I said - I don't know much about the Damned and it might not work.
Alternatively get two of the really old style bolters and mod it into an ancient looking storm bolter - gold gilt and rust!

You are correct! The space marine anatomy involves a large natural breast plate which is actually made of bone as a result of their rib cages being fused together and one of the main conflicts I had with myself when making this model was whether or not I should attempt to sculpt this so it is an accurate representation or to just leave it as. I decided to leave it as a rib cage just because I figured it wouldn't be nearly as skeletal if I just made it into a large breastplate of bone. They are unfluffy enough with the way I have added skeletal parts instead of just making them mysterious space marines in black suits of power armor with bone and fire icons so I don't think this is too much of a stretch.
@Death Gear- Thanks! You should still do it! Afterall, this isn't my original idea either. I copied it off someone on Bolter and Chainsword
@Ironking - Sorry, when I said that he would have Dorn's Arrow I meant that I needed a weapon to count as the gun Pedro Cantor has. The real Pedro model has a gun called Dorn's arrow which was given to the crimson fists because every Imperial Fist successor chapter has a relic from Dorn. His weapon won't be Dorn's Arrow, but it will need to be an elaborate gun to look like it represents it.
You suggestion of using a spear got me thinking though, do you think a spear with a bolter attached to the end like the Adeptus Custodes have would be a good idea? Or would the spear look strange combined with the power fist?
Thanks

I quite like the idea of a spectal weapon - think of a spear (albeit with a bolter) painted up to look like a weapon that the "Army of the Dead - LOTR" might carry... all ghosty like!
So yeh - the AC spear might look cool - even with a powerfist!
RE: the ribcage - you could fuse the middle ribs together into a bone plate - leaving the top and bottom rib open... might work?

I agree with you there, it looks class as it is! a solid mass of bone would not be as macarb to look at! great great model i only wish i had 1% the skill of yourself, i look forward to seeing ore of your stuff in the future.

I think the ribs need some damage to them. Anything that would mess up his frontal armor that much should have left some damage to his ribs. Might give you the opportunity to show some organs.

Ok firstly on the rib-cage front, The marine's ribs do not fuse into a solid plate, I think it says that they become a more complicated lattice of bones without actually sealing up all the gaps. From a biological perspective you would not be able to breathe if you had a single plate of bone instead of ribs (think of how an accordian works, thats how you ribs+intercostal muscles work). So just leave it as-is
Anyway now the bad stuff is out of the way, that looks very awesome, reminds me of the head-melting scene from Indy and the Ark of the Convenant! I think the shoulders could use some flames/bones tho.
Will be following this thread closely, I love LotD!

Excellent start to a great idea. "The Legion of the Damned" was an exciting idea 20 years ago, but it seems GW hasn't really taken the concept too far in that time.
This, on the other hand, adds some real horror and power to the story. I love it. I'm glad you didn't bulk up the ribcage, it would have been more confusing than accurate. This is one of those times where artistic licence wins out.
I'd recommend glowing orbs in the eye sockets for the skull, to represent the "life"force animating the body. You mentioned the glowing green ribcage so maybe you're already planning this. But whatever you do, I'm looking forward to seeing the results!

Wow! Thank you all for the tremendous response. I'm glad I can make my own contribution to DakkaDakka after I've spent so much time following the many awesome P/M blogs on here.
Gulp....I just hope my painting can keep up with the converting....
I'm afraid I only do most of my work on weekends and with exams coming up I won't be having as much time, but from next friday on I'll be in full warhammer mode.
I made a new list for this army and I've been thinking about giving this guy a jump pack instead to use him as a vanguard sergeant with PF and storm shield(yes I know they are a pretty bad unit) but he might be a bit too static for that.
Next up I'll be sculpting the flames and bone icons onto his shoulder pads and armor. I still have to file away the giant chaos eye that is on his power fist too, but it's hard to see in the pics.
I started work on a vanguard veteran and I'll be posting him up soon.
@Mastiff - Thanks for the suggestion on the glowing orbs, I'll try and sculpt some into the eye sockets to see how it looks and I will also be making them a glowing green(scorpion green highlighted up to white) as well.
The drop pods are in because I really want to cover the panels of the drop pods with bones embedded into the surface and the Vanguard are there because I really like them.
Thanks
Lucas
