Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

So my wife and I are sitting here talking about what tournaments /events are coming up in 2010, and how it would be nice to get to some big venue tournaments. In the next month, I should get my battlefoam case custom-built to my Dark Eldar army, making it quite plausible to tote an army around the country and visit GTs.

As I was thinking about 'Ard Boyz, I sit here wondering whether to bring orks or Dark Eldar and thought I would come here for thoughts.

I put my mechanized orks into retirement because (there's no way to say this without sounding boastful) I always win with them. I was starting to be paranoid about 40k because my wife was always telling me that if I never lost, no one would want to play me. I'd like to think that I'm sort of a guru at mechanized orks; I've been able to influence the meta-game at least here at dakka-dakka and see my thoughts and influence spreading to other players on how to use them effectively.

So I started Dark Eldar so I'd have something more challenging and less forgiving. I've had several friendly games and two tournaments so far. 'Ard Boyz 2010 isn't so far away.

I'm quite confident in my orks, although I realize my inherent weaknesses against fully mechanized lists (although I still deal with them well). My orks are a 100% assault force. On the flip side, my dark eldar are mostly a static gunline (albeit in raiders) and have their own inherent weaknesses - against Black Templar and necron monoliths.

I'd like to kick ass and take names this year and as I'm ramping up to think about this year's 'Ard Boyz....I'm wondering if I should be working the orks or the Dark Eldar. Thoughts? Advice?

Also voting for Orks since you won't enjoy a 2.5k gamw with Dar Eldar who peak at 2k.

If your looking for some big venue events you can always check out the enormous list of Indy GT's and the event sticky in the scheduling a game forum.

It would just depend on how far you wanna travel. The Slaughter in Space is in April and it was an awesome 2 day GT last year.

But yeah, Orks for anything over 2k

I put my money where my mouth is every chance I get, every weekend that I have an opportunity. My entire DE army cost me $100 because of massive amounts of store credit at all sorts of different venues.

And Orks it is.

Uh, didn't you quit in the middle of your first game of 'Ard Boyz 2009 Semi-Finals after boasting how Orks were going to dominate the tournament?

Danny, thanks for showing up to derail a thread - you should revisit the forum rules.

Orks *did* dominate our semi-final round - they just weren't my orks.

The top two players in semi-finals were players that I tabled during quarter finals. And yes...I did leave during the first game. My opponent got a full massacre out of me because I left, and then went on to get tabled twice himself. Do you really think that my playing ability had anything to do with me leaving? I was deathly ill.

Please don't feel the need to post in threads I make; your posting history reflects rather rude behavior, and you follow me around like an annoying parrot chirping half a story in an attempt to get a rise out of me. Go away.

Agreed. One of the common misconceptions about 'Ard Boyz is that gimmicky spam lists perform well. The armies that do well in 'Ard Boyz are the same ones that do well in regular tournaments, albeit with more stuff.

I really do not understand why Fexes have been written off completely. The broods of 3 are what makes them good. At high point games, you can afford multiple broods. Add in other MCs, like a couple Tyrants and Tervigon troops, and you can saturated the board with MCs.

As I said, I'm interested in seeing it. I'm not saying its the strongest list out there, but I think Fexes might find a place in this points level.

Here is one vote for you not getting sick this year :3

And I would love to see you run your orks, though DE aren't exactly what everyone thinks of as a 'competitive army' and you could probably prove yourself as a general running those...but haters want to see you fall. I say prove 'em wrong!

Orks are a lot of fun at 2.5k... and, barring anything but drawhammer objectives on a board quarters deployment, they can compete relatively well.

New SW and Nids give them hell, though.

I don't think the meta will have changed overmuch by the time 'ard boyz rolls around. JotWW will be nasty, but every army that has psyker defense will take it so it becomes less attractive. New nids will be there, providing more of a reason to go with lascannons and missiles than all blasts.

All in all little will be changed overall, and what few changes there are I think will help my setup, so I'm really looking forward to it this year. Even figured out where I went wrong last year (even though I made it to the finals and did well there) and have corrected the flaw that led to my only loss of the tournament.

You seem already set on Orks and I can only praise you for the idea. As Clthomps and others noted, DE at over 2,000 is just kind of sad. Do up even one 2,500 mock list and you'll see what I mean.

Depending on the timing of the events in your area, you'll probably know your abilities with DE by then. That being said, with the success you've had with your orks, don't you want to see them reach the pinnacle before truly being retired? Go for the gold and retire them in style.

Save DE for 2011 when you've had a year under your belt and perhaps a new codex to explore.

Using the trick with the Reavers and the Heamons I would boost up the mid, lose a normal biker to shooting attacks. split the portal heamon off by moving the unit away from him, have him drop the portal and play a normal game after that.

Its not terrible but it has its flaws. Mainly KP

Only one WWP in a 2500 list? You have balls the size of small cantaloupes my friend.

I will note that I do not believe the WWP trick will work since you cannot move a unit away from an IC to separate them without activating the unit for movement, and the IC with them.

mind quoting the rules that state that? As far as I see per RAW its legal.

Page 48 the 4th bullet point. (the only way an IC can leave a unit)
Page 29 2nd paragraph 2nd sentence (Heavy weapons and movement of a unit which shows that not moving still counts as moving as far as units go)

The only way for an independent character to leave a unit it is part of is to move out of coherency. Therefore, at the point you begin moving the unit the IC is part of that unit and has to "move" (via not moving his location) out of coherency. Therefore he has moved in the movement phase even though his location has not changed which is supported by the Heavy Weapon rules.

At least that's how I read/interpret it.

I will note that if it was a group of only 3 Haemys I would actually agree with you, as then the two other ICs could move away from the unit of the third IC. But with the inclusion of a non-IC unit I don't think it works...hmmm this would be good YMDC fodder as it is a complicated question.

Dash: why not have the best of both worlds? Give yourself a challenge and play the Dark Eldar in the 1st round, as you already know you can steamroll with your orks then. Then for the semi finals round bring the orks out so they can show their stuff. Thjen if you make the finals bring whatever army you feel like would give you a better chance of winning.

Orks. I second the money-where-your-mouth-is approach. It's not that I doubt that your list is effective, but you've praised it too much. Talk can get you so far, but if you want to get yourself recognised you'll need to go to 'Ard Boyz.
