I was looking at the witch hunter army on GW website and MAN THEY ARE SOME AWESOME MODELS!!! .....i wish they were plastic, does anyone here collect them? Are they frustrating to make?

For the Sisters of battle it's just gluing the backpack onto them, then gluing them onto the base.

I love mine for not having to assemble them. And painting metal is no more trouble than painting plastic.

Really want to start a SoB army but several things are holding me back. They very rarely come up on ebay as complete army auctions (I generally tend to buy the whole army in one lot rather than squads and units here and there). Secondly, with all the rumours flying around about when/if certain armies will or won't get redone, I am loathe to start lest a new range and codex suddenly appear.

Playing Dark Heresy is good, you have a small number of the very cool models, numbers limited enough to do some very nice conversion work, and don't have to learn how to play what is arguably one of the most challenging armies to play.

Sisters of Battle are trivial to assemble and excellent in terms of detail. However, they are very expensive, and this is compounded by the need for additional blisters in order to make powerful/useful units.

Even more expensive now that the box of ten is gone and you need to buy 4 blisters to make a minimum squad

Hi LewisMio,
Who would you be playing against primarily? That can make a big difference. Sisters of Battle are all metal and expensive, but with a good group of gamers you won't have trouble asking them to start you with smaller games (500 pts and then a little more each time as you assemble your army) Sisters are very fun to paint, the armor is elegant and they are handsomely beautiful, are they not?

As for how they play, well, I confess I never got the hang of them and defected to chaos. But if you want to play Sisters, I'm sure you could learn from people here at Dakka that play the Witchhunters regularly. Read the Tacticas, they will be honest about a lot of the armies weaknesses. I've heard Sisters players speak of some great win records, and they are usually happy to share advice with sincere seekers of knowledge.

Anyhow, welcome to the Forum! Whatever you decide to play, may the gods grant you victories and glory!

I have... a few models from the range.

Penitent Engines and Exorcists (my God, the Exorcists!!) are awful to build, but everything else is very straight forward. There tends to be a lot more clean-up than other armies (because the moulds are all from second edition and well and truly f- up through use), but it is generally not too bad. The army is a joy to paint.

They are probably the second most expensive army to play (Guard would have the most expensive possibilities). Even when we had the box of 10, you needed to go out and buy two blisters to make a proper unit, then you need the Rhinos to run them in. I think I spent $1000 on my first 1000 points, and I got everything from discount stores. Games Workshop has since pulled Sisters from third party locations, so they only have whatever their remaining stock is. The army would be a lot more expensive to play now.

They are a tough army to play at first. I kept getting flogged by everyone who looked at me. Eventually, however, I started winning a heck of a lot more than I lost. The army only really struggles against Orks. Anyone else will quickly cry `cheese' once they learn about Acts of Faith.

The current Codex is really showing its age, and while there is a new one known to be in the works, the current rumours put it waaay back. Sisters are expected to be the last army updated, in 2012. Now, beyond six months, even the designers do not know when things will or will not be done, but that is where it is currently estimated to be.

The box of ten is not gone.

I liked the idea of them but the prohibitve cost kept me out of it. That and the current SM and other models in plastic started coming with nicer details, the newer looking bolters, etc. that drew me in to SM and IG.

Hopefully the rumors of demonhunters/witch hunters coming sometime this year are true. However, I am not holding my breath.

Witch hunters are awesome. Yes I am biased. They are my first and only 40K army. Incredible painting possibilities, and yes, I do run the freakshow sometimes. Penitent engines are not bad at all. I've built 3, no pinning, and none have ever broken. Sisters models are gorgeous, too.

Every once in a while you will see an army go on Ebay. The prices are usually fairly high relative to other armies. But I've gotten some good deals. I've found that Sisters strip easily due to being metal, so there is relatively little risk there.

Every once in a while, I've found a girl whose mold was offset a smidge, or where the detail dissolved on the face due to poor molding. But that is rare.

I found it to be a challenging army to learn with, but really fun. Even with the rumored update, the current models are so cool you can't lose. Free $0.02 for ya!

Given how fixed and difficult to conver the infantry models are to convert I'm surprise more Witch Hunter players don't convert Excorcists and Penitent engines. The master for the penitnent engine was made using a number of bits from a sentinel. So thats a cheap and easy starting point. And how hard would it be to combine a Whirlwind with SOB parts for an excorcist? Pretty easy. Or even just using the Forgeworld Excorcist. Or making your own organ with plastic tubes on an immolator kit.

Don't know if anyone else has a problem with this, but the paint on mine just peeled off, even when the GW guy helped me do it properly the paint wouldn't stay on. The mystery remains!

Did you wash them first? If you do not, the paint comes off.

EDIT: For what it is worth, I have dropped minis many times before, and had a few cases where they ricochet off my boot, into some furniture, then bounce across the room. Not a single models has any paint chipped.

Varnish them afterwards, it makes a huge difference. If you prime, paint and varnish then paint chipping is reduced a lot (although I'm thinking I should gloss then dullcoat my DL warriors, they have a patch on the lances I'm getting sick of touching up).
