District 9 was my favourite, but I expect The Hurt Locker will win, which means Precious will...

Avatar will win, because James Cameron has lots of bribe money.

Hurt Locker will win best picture, best director, or both. Avatar is devoid of anything but special effects. It will win all the special effects awards.

I actually liked Avatar.

The story is Cliché, but there is nothing wrong with Cliché if it works.

I don't think it worked at all. I hated the protagonist and his stupid hissing girlfriend, and wanted their trees to get blown up and the golf playing business guy to make billions.

It's not about liking it. It's about it being the best example of movie making of the year. It's not. The story is a cliche storm and most of the actors were phoning it in. It should win best SFX by a landslide but it's got no business being up for best picture.

I mean it was entertaining every now and again but it was really stupid at times with pointless violence (yes,yes, Tarantino I know...)

I'd like to see Up! take it, as that was the picture I enjoyed most last year. Avatar was a great mindless movie, but a script that cliche does not a Best Picture make.

I agree with Frazzled (feel dirty just typing that), the Hurt Locker will win.

Exactly. I seriously think I kind of fell asleep midway through or something and phased out for a bit.

Up was good, though I have to say I have not been impressed with most of the films from that list I have seen.

The Hurt Locker will win for numerous reasons. The least of which is that its a great movie and it deserves it.

Its made by Kathryn Bigelow, who by Academy political standards is due for an Oscar. Unfortunately, its that simple. As talented and as gifted a director she is, the Academy will give her the nod because she doesn't have a penis.

Its a movie about the Iraqi war that focuses on the emotions behind war. Just the theme is enough to sway the Academy.

All of this is unfortunate, because given anonymity and political neutrality, the Hurt Locker deserves the Oscar anyways. But this is the why as it stands, which is a joke. Not that the Academy Awards are much more than that.

The only two that have a chance of winning are Hurt Locker and Avatar. If Avatar wins, the "male bias" will be maintained and the Academy will take flak. Blah blah, but its more of a chance because the Academy looooooooooves massive money bags too. I still think Hurt Locker will be the more politically correct choice. Ah, the fate of Oscars, how quaint.

Agreed,Pocahontas in space should not win the Oscar because it had wonderful special effects.

District 9? f'serious? it was good and all but no way near what should be considered a best picture of the year. But then most movies in 09 sucked.

Up was great, but also don't think that's a best picture. will win for animated / kids / family movies though.

Star Wars also didn't reign in 2 BILLION dollars in less than two months haha. In a trashed economy no less.

Plus, it was the late seventies, it didn't have enough DISCO.

As a franchise, I have no doubts that Avatar could not hold a candle to Star Wars. Comparing the movies side by side, is also unfair, because Avatar was basically a one-off cgi face-feth, while Star Wars was an epic in all senses of the word.

The corporate hack from aliens, was a massively better character. I cannot remember his name, though... .

The Blind Side-won't win although pretty good. Sandra Bullock will win though.
District 9-won't win although good movie and very good considering the budget it had. It took District 9 to out robot suit the Japanese.
An Education -didn't see.
Inglourious Basterds -strudel? should get an award for coolest bad guy of the year, and best bar gunfight to date in this Millennium.

As long as the Blob or Inglorious rip off doesnt win I'll be happy.

Whats freeky is that both of these movies were directed by the same guy. Its like Lukas. they take a few years off and get enamored with special effects and forget that whole plotline/writing/story thing. I blame the CLinton Whitehouse, and Liechtenstein. One day we'll make Leichtenstein pay for their evil!!!

I would prefer that version of "the blob" to win, it at least doesnt make me want to puke on sight.

I dont really see what the big deal about the hurt locker is, I watched it twice and it was okay, but not best picture material.

Yea was it just me who got that the BG's were actually right. Now the squid boy and son are going to return with more armed squiddies and it could be very very bad for the evil humies when they return?
