Subject: Great Sporting Rivalries?
|
 |
Fixture of Dakka
|
Next weekend sees the return of the footballing fixture that Hampshire Constabulary have been dreading, Southampton vs Portsmouth! I am of course a Saints fan and have attended three of these fixtures when we were both in the Premiership. They tend to be pretty ugly on the basis of us not really liking each other very much. Some politican was recently asked what was the worst form of discrimination he'd come across and he replied seriously that, "the unfounded mutual loathing between the populations of Southampton and Portsmouth beggars belief."
Now I consider myself a level headed individual and don't get involved too much in this kind of silliness beyond booing Portsmouth everytime they touch the ball. I have however seen the vitirol between the two sets of fans at first hand with one Portsmouth fan being physically restrained by police officers from his efforts to take on a whole crowd of Saints fans on route to Fratton Park. I later caught sight of him in the stadium (not sure why he was let in?!) and he never took his eyes off us during the entire match, our very presence making him livid. This was the occasion that Portsmouth beat us 1-0 and (a small section of) their fans celebrated victory by trashing their own town.
So is this the greatest sporting rivalry of all time or are there worst ones elsewhere in the world?

India vs Pakistan in the cricket. Funnily enough these games tend to be played and watched in good spirits, as everyone gets a good solid dose of perspective and realises there are a lot more important things than sport.
On the other hand in aussie rules the West Coast Eagles (which for the most part represent the northern half of Perth and also the forces of truth and goodness) play the Fremantle Dockers (the southern end of the city) is an incredibly spiteful affair, despite the fact that for the rest of the year there's no divide between north and south beyond some gentle ribbing. No-one in the rest of the country cares much at all about either team but they all tune in come the derby to see if the two teams will end up punching hell out of each other.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Celtic v Rangers make Portsmouth and Southampton look soft. + theres a ton of religious motive to boot. But it has got better in the past twenty years.
Today it would surely be AC Milan/Inter milan. They share the same stadium and have huge fences seperating their different areas. There have been reports of Inter fans hauling motorbikes up into there area then throwing them over the fence onto AC fans during derby games.

Are some good ones over here.
You must be an Eagles fan to put Cowboys-Eagles on that list. One of the conditions for a great rivalry is that it must be completely mutual hatred, and I don't think the Cowboys fans hate the Eagles like the Eagles fans hate the Cowboys.
Packers-Bears is better. Steelers-Browns used to be better, but is a shell of a rivalry now.

I don't think anyone can hate another team or their own team as much as the eagles fans do
ps I can't stand either team......

Pakistan vs India
Maate, that stuff is intense. I remember as a kid practicing cricket and neabry we could see a horde of Paki's watching the cricket match in the local mosque. There was roaring and screaming, and I remember hoping that, whatever happend, Pakistan won. Who knows what they would have done if India came out on top.
Other than that, Aus and NZ and also the Brits have a fair bit of rivalry going on.

A friend who was telling me about the Superbowl last night was saying that the rivalry and excitement about college football is far stronger usually than it is with regards to the national sides. Is this fair comment ?
From the little clip on "Stephen Fry in America" it did seem quite OTT for what was, AFAIK, little more than two colleges playing against each other.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

For a while the Bears stunk so bad, I would almost feel sorry for them.
The crowd at Lambeau gets nasty. The announcers try to ignore "The Bears still suck!" chant that happens every 4th quarter.
I figure Eagles fans hate everyone else.
