Hey guys,

I need a place to blog my forever WIP ork army. I started it in the early 2000s before leaving it half complete until recently when I have restarted the Wwaaagh thanks in part to my 11 year old brother pinching all the fun of duffing up an ooniverse full of scumbags..

So I got a Deathskulls army, with a personal touch being yellow/black warning stripes wich da mek sez iz ded scary n I fink luks ded flash too. They are lootas because I cant stop myself Kutomisin everything I get hold of to the total limit. My imagination far outweighs my skill, but that's why orks are a good option! Also, as noted elsewhere, I used to work in a toy testing lab and used to test GW stuff. I got to keep loads of stuff not related to Orks but made for a good bitz box..

My current projects are a Burnas squad which I need maxed out (for nid swarm removal), Flash gits (who work as shoota boys when my lists get to big), a grot squad, my Cybork boss and a krazy battlewaggon. You can see some this stuff in my gallery.

This first blog im gonna concentrate on the BW and get some imput. First heres the pic::

and the basecoat

So my question is: What Next??

The other vehicles in my army (currently only 2 kans and 2 old style trukks as I rely mostly on foot sloggers) are my best attemps at rust bucket metalics. I have used black primer on them followed by an assortment of dry brushed dark to light metals. THATS IT! (appart from details..) SO, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips to build up metalics?

Here are the kans and trukks to give you an idea::

I want to do some nice go-faster-stripes on the waggon in red. Hopefully prominent enough to count for red paint job rule. I will be attempting to weather the red down so it looks like an old paint job flaking off after continous neglect. Again if you got any tips I'd apreciate them.

I know red is a bitch to get to cover darker colours. I have a hell of a time bringing out light red highlights or even just a nice bright red from dark base colours. What do you guys do with your reds??? I saw disdainful's descovery of a sweet red from a Vallejo set might be worth a look for. I ask as I plan on going to buy some more paints ASAP and need some ideas....

Thanks for your imput.

For the reds a brown or a dark red basecoat helps alternatively for Orks I quite like a rough coat with the undercoat showing through so don't bother. For rusting up vehicles one place to start is a Rust Wash. Orange Red and Gunmetal paint heavily diluted add some washing up liquid and hey presto Rush wash then slather it on enthusiastically. For a less extreme look Brown Ink works well. Another approach is weathering powders I'd make your own using crushed chalk pastels although you can buy them. I'd also suggest looking at the Sons of Orar blog thats about at the moment.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

For reds over a dark undercoat, I start with a layer of Bestial Brown, then Red Gore, then Blood Red. Highlight with a little orange or pink (depending on the look you're going for) mixed in.

Sweet ideas. I had no idea about washing up liquid!? I will definitly give it a try. What's the idea behind the weathering powders? Is it for texture or as a final touch? I'm not sure I like em, look a bit dusty for my taste, but yeah, I can certainly do some trials with cheap chalks.. ( Yeah the Sons of Orar are really cool! )

Cool. I got some Mechrite red, but I might mix it up with some brown. I need to experiment more with mixing colours..

Just been to buy some paints. I have 6 metalics to work with! Hopefully get my first coat on tonight..

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, so I mentioned that I bought some paints. Heres what I got:

That lamp post will become part of warboss with the help of those tools and a little green stuff. Hopefully soon!

Here's the first grimey rusty metalic coat. I drybrushed up from gun metal to mithryl, dabbed tin bits on to start rusty grimey areas, adding to low lights with 1/1/2 chainmain/dark angels/tinbits. I finally splashed a bit of black wash over to hit recesses/redefine rivets. I've not used inks before so I was experimentin. It did a bit of a number on the grime, decolouring it more than I wanted. I will probaly go at it again with extreme highlights and maybe try n liven up rusty grimey stuff with more green/silver/copper mixes..

Along the sides, I'm going to use masking tape to give me better edges to the overall pattern of the vitally important red paint job to come. I'm not sure how it will turn out as I've not done this before either, but thats part of the idea with this project - LEARN.. I will selectively blocking out the metallic with black, followed by the foundation layer and build up the colour from there. Here's a quick paint pick to explain (badly). The cross hatched areas, if you follow me, will be red bits...

Bed time!

I got to work on the red paint job. I decided to go for "go faster stripes" taking inspiration from tim westwood and pimp my ride. Init. Heres what I did:

The whole process took me about an hour and was a refreshing change to the hours of cross eyed concentration I have come to associate with painting my army. It doesn't look exactly as I was hoping, but I think with another thinner red line above the main horizontal it'll look cool. I think I will have to do a lot of muddying up just to ease the colour into the vehicle a bit more though..

Lookin good. I like the stripe, it's choppy quality. Very nice. I like the conversions on the battle wagon. Can we see it from behind? Those exhaust pipes look like a hot exit.

Really nice dude!

Love that red stripe, very effective technique.

Want to make a big track from scratch at some stage myself. Ork conversions are just so fun!
