I was debating playing doubles games with my regular gaming mates.
I wondered what would be considered the greatest doubles pairing in terms of armies? My choice of partner to my Orks would be Tau or Eldar to give out nasty as hell armour killage at range, letting my lads do the grievous carve-up in melee.
What other amazing combos are there?

During the xmas hols I played a doubles game with my group and had to lend my ally an army he picked my ultras (biggest choice of units) and I took my wolves (mostly unpainted at the time) and against mech tau and mech eldar it worked really well grey hunters and long fangs with smurf tac squads/sternguards and assault/vanguard supported each other perfectly, though I suppose they should as they're not really much different...

One of the most interesting games I saw was two Guard players - one running horde, one running mech. Although I don't know if that's so much a good army, as it still only managed to tie against their opponents, Orks and Slaanesh CSM. What was interesting was that the Orks and Horde Guard basically ran into each other and exploded; the end of the game had virtually no Orks or Guardsmen left on the field, only tanks and some CSMs. I don't know about the 'ultimate' tag team, but I'd imagine a decent team would be any Assaulty army (Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Orks, anything) teamed with a Tau army. The gunline strategy really works well when your opponent gets tied up with decent melee units, rather than getting into assault with Fire Warriors on turn 2.

I ran TH/SS Terminators and my partner took Fateweaver for the sweet sweet 2+/3+ re-roll. In one game they walked through 60 boyz, 10 Nobz and a Warboos in exchange for 1 terminator.

In my experience, Tau/IG...the sheer volume of fire was stupifying.
I'd love to see a good Khorne army with my Tau some time.... I pop the transport, you chop up the squishy people inside.

Long-Range Ultramarine Land Speeder Pilot
|
I played Ultramarines with a Nid player and the dynamic was basically this:
1st Turn:
- Two drop pods with beacons land and deploy an assault squad with a techmarine attached and an Iron Clad, while the Libby uses infinity gate to teleport him self, the unit of two Carnifexs and a Alph forward to unload on the enemy.
- Tervi moves up spawns more gaunts. The rest of the marine force opwns fire.
2nd Turn:
- Another drop pod with an assault squad in it comes down and Doom in a Spore pod(if we roll well).
- Close combat ensues to protect doom from anything that survived his special power within threat range.
- Tervi spawns more gaunts. Gaunts capture any objectives in our zone.
3+ Turn:
- Finsih up what is left. Capture stuff in their zone.
People were very surprised by the libby+Carni+Alpha combo smaking them in the face first turn along with the two units landing in thei zone from pods. Which was a great distraction for the rest of the army to take out priority targets and also distracted the enemy from destroying the drop pods, allowing the libby and doom to use the beacons in following turns to prevent any scatter results or loss of life to deep strike errors. Great fun. This combo army won us the best general award and some loot.

This. The IG player just takes a ridiculous amount of ordinance and the Nid mops up anything that gets close to the firing line.

Congratulations?
Clearly the players have to be taken into account.
We've played CSM and Daemons(Twice and won both times), Sisters of Battle and Salamanders(won), Orks and Dark Eldar(Draw), Tau and SM(won), and a very nasty CSM and CSM teamup with 4 Lashes of Submission(won).

From what I heard from some players I know at the doubles tournament, the most effective armies are pretty much a single 1500 point army split between 2 different players.
However, apparently Demon combination armies were very nasty as well.

SM and Orks wouldn't be too bad.
Orks take 1 Warboss, 1 Big Mek, 2 Nobs Mobs (One as Troops), 2 Burna Boyz Mobs, 3 Slugga Boyz Mobs (All with trukks), 1 Gretchin Mob, 4 Dreds (One as Troops) (CCW), 2 Deffkoptas, and 1 Wartrakk. SM takes 1 Captain, 1 Librarian, 6 Tacticals Squads with long range weapons/tank-bustng weapons, in Rhinos, 3 Dakka Dreadnoughts(Guns only), 3 Land Speeders Sqaudrons with lots of weapons, and 3 Devastator Squads with a crap-load of heavy stuff.
Orks keep the tough units locked up while the Marines both kill at long range and take objectives.

This would be my vote, though IG could do a good job of supporting Orks as well with manticores and medusae breaking the AV 14 transports that we normally have trouble with. Dark Eldar would be an interesting ally to have as well with mechanized Orks for the delicious dark lance and armor spam.
