Quite possibly, for yet another obscure reason....we may be doomed...again...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8556621.stm

I, personally, think the whole 2012 thing is recockulous. I beleive we may be entering a new age of knowledge and awakening..or something like that...maybe Necrons will get an update, who knows? But I find it highly interesting that the LHC will be shut down for a YEAR near the end of 2011...only to be opened...hmm? in a YEAR at the end of 2012, producing 14TeV* . Double the amount of power currently being used. We all (I think) know that the proposed date of Catastrophageddon is December 26th^...certainly is a coincidence...

* "The ultimate aim is to collide particles head on at 14TeV to recreate the conditions in the moments after the Big Bang. "

This is hardly news. This bs has been flying around the internet for years now. Listen to any good scientist involved with the program; they'll be able to tell you in all certainty that the Large Hardon Collider is safe. I'd rather listen to them than crackpot conspiracy theorists or attention-whoring bloggers.

Hell, if you're that interested, I can point to you a lot of reassuring sources. I had my own little panic attack over this last year.

wow. I really actually feel kind of insulted. Where exactly did I mention anything that made you think that I was clueless about this? In fact, even my wording, and my points given, make it rather obvious that this is the exact opposite. Ouch, man.

One, I am one of the biggest skeptics when it comes to conspiracy theories, the ones that I actually put faith in, I research exhaustively. Two, some of the worst man-made disasters were scientifically proven to be safe. Being an avid reader and fan of Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking, and Neil deGrasse Tyson...I beleive that there is an alarming number of red flags that pop up when thinking about how the LHC works. Most of them lie in the field of theoretical physics and educated speculation, but it is in no way safe like being inside the force field from Disney's Explorers..(haha old movie reference...)....

The energy produced by the LHC is so small in real terms that even if something unexpected did happen, it'd be incredibly brief and certainly not have any effect on the world out side.

14TeV sounds like a lot but is actually only equal to 0.000224 Joules of energy. That's less then Kate Moss consumes in a day

I grant you that applied on a quantum scale it is a phenomenal amount of power (which is why all my Particle Physics friend are getting wet knickers about it). But we are perfectly safe from any unexpected events

Im still a bit on the fence with this idea. Yea it could, and probably will work the way they say/hope it will. But lets be realistic for a moment as well, they are trying to recreate a big bang. I just hope that if it goes horribly wrong, its only Akira like is booming power. That way Im safe all the way over here in America

It's only recreating the Big Bang for a couple of particles; it's like comparing a firecracker to a thermonuclear device.

No offence intended here Cheese, but perhaps you should remain a bit more objective, sure there are some strange theories concerning various phenomena,etc...and much of it is gak, however, not all scientific "fact" is etched in stone, the "crackpots" of today may in fact turn out to be the "groundbreakers" of tommorow.
Or to put it in perspective, several hundred years ago everyone knew earth was flat & was the center of the universe, anyone who thought other wise was a "crackpot" dabbling in pseudo science.

that's just my point...one of the most published things about the LHC is that nobody knows exactly what it is going to do. Yes, it was "designed to collide two counter rotating beams of protons or heavy ions." (CERN), but exactly what happens after that, is under debate. "Physicists claim that the LHC will answer largely unanswered questions. the deep structure of space and time, especially regarding the intersection of quantum mechanics and general relativity, where current theories and knowledge are unclear or break down altogether."* Yeah, that sounds super safe, well-thought-out, and error-proof.

Now, let me be clear on go on record stating that I DO NOT beleive the LHC is a doomsday machine, but I DO find it mildly intriguing that the shut down coincides yet AGAIN with the whole cattywompus 2012 debacle.

I agree, but if it DID happen...well...it's a good Rush Album!

Honestly though, I find the culmination of events coming to a head at this point in time becoming more frequent and severe as we draw closer to 2012 a bit interesting...

I think the LHC has already proved that it is not 'error-proof' in fact i would go as far as saying that a 2012 re-start date is going to be subject to change.

It is however a well-thought-out experiment; we know where are theories break down and we know the right questions to ask to try to support them/find out new stuff.

Find me anything in this world that is super-safe if you can.

Kind of instigating, too...

You are completely missing my point though. You are phrasing your responses like I am crying that the sky is falling...I am asking you to take a HUGE step back and look at it Globally....like it or not, the events ARE culminating suspiciously...is it doomsday? most likely not...but don't be ignorant and dismiss it as crackpot...

I know I am gonna catch for the FEMA camp thing...but it's pretty next level when you start researching it like a smart person would research anything.

That was sarcasm...

And that challenge is kind of lame. There IS nothing super safe....and that is point entirely. To say the LHC is anything but a well thought out, VERY large and VERY powerful mystery machine would be foolish.

I think what you're doing is taking events around the world and mis-interpreting them in order to fit the idea that there is some big coalescence coming in a couple of years time.

The fact that there have been major earthquakes in countries situated on top of whacking great fault lines is not particularly surprising; they may seem more inter-linked purely because we are all so well connected to each other these days (bless the Interwebs). I'm not a geologist, but i would imagine it is possible that the recent Quakes are somehow linked together, one causing another etc...

The LHC is just an interesting science experiment and is a bout as dangerous an Newton bouncing apples off his head to prove the theory of gravity.

The FEMA thing looks semi-plausible but then so do many, many other conspiracy theories out there.

I should clarify that I don't belive we are in any immenent danger from this experiment, however I belive anything is posible when venturing into "uncharted teritory",no one can say with absolute certianty what will or won't occour.
Now,as for the "end of the world in 2012",I remember the whole Y-2K "worries",people getting very bent out of shape, etc, and of course nothing happened, and personally belive this will be much of the same sort of thing (although my belife doesn't make it so),however, certian phenomena, such as the sequential earthquakes IG-Urban mentioned, does,on a base level, cuase me to contemplate ANY posibility.
Who knows, perhaps panic/fear concerning 2012 will be the very catylist witch brings about disaster.

It strikes me that, if we already knew exactly what the LHC was going to do, spending all that money on building the bloody thing might have been a mistake. That said, it's in no-one's interest - scientist or otherwise - to destroy the planet, so I think they probably ruled out THAT possibility BEFORE they built it.

"Hey, guys?"

"Um...yeah?"

"Is there any chance this machine we're building could destroy life as we know it?"

They never predicted anything. It's when their 'Long Count' calendar ends and restarts, just like ours does. It's a very appealing date for anyone who wants to predict something bad.

Astrologically we are entering a new age; the Age of Aquarius. That is the constellation that will be visible at sunrise on the equator on or around 2012. Whatever the exact date, it's coming.

The LHC, which has a huge price tag, will be fundamental in the expansion of physics. However, will it unlock a whole new path of study and understanding, or obliterate part of the Earth remains to be seen. I don't know enough about the quantum aspects to give any kind of answer. But if they do go and create some kind of BIG BANG and create some kind of Universe if only for a millisecond, it will definitely raise a lot of questions about our own existence and place in this material universe.

However, even Tesla said he could cut the world in half with LAARP, which I think is far more dangerous to everything on the planet than LHC. What FITTZ said,

"Who knows, perhaps panic/fear concerning 2012 will be the very catylist witch brings about disaster."

is probably true. If everyone is in the toilet about life and bummed out about the way things are, then I'd expect some proverbial Gak hitting the fan. Unfortunately for most of us, the world is moving along right on schedule as the rich are getting richer and the poor, poorer.
