Just placed my copy of Warhammer 7th Edition on ebay. Neglected to mention that 8th Edition is likely to be out in a few months. Dishonest

Not at all.

As long as you list the item correctly and all of the information you provide is true then it isn't dishonest.

Most people out there are well aware that 8th edition is on it's way.

With any purchase, regardless of if it is from a GW store, an independant, online discounter or Ebay it is down to the buyer to check these things out before handing over their cash.

Cool, I shall go to bed with a clear conscience. Also potentially stitching somebody up by offloading Daemonhunters and Necrons... although these two are practically antiques now

Forever alone

When I first started 40k, the 'Chaos' Space Marine codex was about two weeks away, and I went on Ebay and bought a 3rd edition codex (2nd print) and a bunch of converted World Eaters that I can't use anymore.

I will find that seller.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

What else would you do with them if not sell them off? Send them back to GW for a refund?

Muh ha ha ha ha

Sure, like THAT will ever happen.

Go sell them, and I hope you get a nice price. I have more then my fair share of excessive amounts of gear, as well. I think I'm going to look into dropping it off and getting some loot as well.

The main question I have is How much is considered a good price?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Very considerate of you to even ask

But according to me, Of cause you are not dishonest. On ebay your job is to describe the item to the best of your ability and ship it in a safe and timely manner once it's sold.

You see it a fair bit on ebay particularly. I have seen many, many copies of old 40k rule books and codices. Obviously, it is always down to the user to check but the sellers never make mention of it.

The books basically become collctor's items as GW's policy seems to be to destroy the remaining unsold copies once a new version is released. Generally the peole who buy it will be collectors or someone who just hasn't checked up on it. I'm assuming more of them are collectors though

Some people just like to mix in some old models with the new ones though.

Many old models are still possible to use with newer rules. I doubt there will be many collectors going for the 7th edition books, they are too commonplace. The only rulebooks that are worth anything serious are those of the Rogue Trader era.

I don't see this as a problem at all. In fact it probably works to the benefit of both parties. You want to sell your models cause you want the new stuff. The person buying wants models and since new ones are around the corner they may get a better price for the ones you are selling. As long as you are honest in your description it will be fine.

These things work both ways anyway. Some old figures are more sought after than the new ones, such as the daemonettes when the plastic ones were released. Rulebooks not so much, in all likelyhood selling a rulebook when the next is close to release will result in it selling for a pittance. Both parties should acknowledge this.

Its pretty disingenuous, not that theres anything stopping you from doing such of course, unless its that pesky "ethics" thing ....

caveat emptor is valid yea, and they should do their research, but youre still hoping to take advantage of and profit from their ignorance.

OOP rulebooks should be listed as such. I see plenty of old codices doing the rounds.

As to old models, WYSIWYG, I keep reading about folks who like the aesthetic from the previous killa kans/deff dred, who must be laughing now everyone else is ditching them for the new plastics.

If you are dishonest then the makers of Kinder Egg are going to hell. Do they advertise thier product as a disappointingly small peice of plastic wrapped in almost inedible chocolate? No they don't. It is up to the buyer to know what thay are buying, as long as you give all relivant details then that is fine.
After all the book is no less usuable just because it is outdated.

Bah, not dishonest at all. Not your job to spread common knowledge, and, in all likelihood, you won't get as much for it now with the new edition due this summer. Get what you can for it.

What would you say if you went into a Games Workshop store and bought the Rulebook or Codex with the belief that these could be used only to find that the following week the rules changed.

I think you would be angry that GW hadn't told you about the change.

Would you still argue that it was up to the buyer to ensure that they knew about the changes.

I have seen sellers sell of things like the WARGEAR book and quoting from the back of the book - making out that the book still applied when we all know that for almost every army out there the Wargear book is now out of date.

It may not be dishonest but it does lack a certain amount of moral courage not to mention in the description that the rules would soon be out of date.

By all means sell if for the fluff or pictures...

Models rarely become 'unplayable' and old models generally can still be used - may even become collectors items or be wanted by players to match older armies - not everyone likes the new stuff.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

This happened during the 2nd to 3d edition change, as well as the 4th to 5th edition of fantasy.

I also had a bud pick up a gak load of Chaos Dwarves not a week before they disappeared from the radar. He was not a happy camper.

there was no real big announcement that they were being discontinued, it just sort of like one day they were thee, the next day, they weren't.

A while ago I stumbled upon an an "auction" on the bay, and the guy was selling this mini (picture taken from Codex: Armageddon, sorry for the gak quality):

(Note: mine came with a Bolter w. scope instead of combi-melta)

The asking price was ridiculous, several times over what I payed for it back in the days. I'm not bashing this guy, but I would like an estimate on what you guys think it's worth. $10? more or less?

I know my question might seem a bit OT (couldn't find a better thread), but it's kind of relevant. I mean, when does something become a collectible and stop being old junk?

I just bought a new copy of the WHFB hard cover two weeks ago, so I wouldn't feel bad about selling off your used copy. It's not like people are going to stop playing the game until the new edition comes out.

Inanimate wrote:I know my question might seem a bit OT (couldn't find a better thread), but it's kind of relevant. I mean, when does something become a collectible and stop being old junk?

Old junk becomes collectible when crazy people are willing to pay for it. Either that, or it becomes collectible when it gains that combination of a) being rare, b) being interesting to someone, and c) being in "good enough" condition. The trick is just to find the right person to satisfy the middle part.

How much is a greater daemon that I paid US $8 for in 1992 worth today? To me, it's worth quite a lot because I like the model, but to someone else it could be anywhere between worthless and hundreds of dollars.

Isn't 8th edition still like 2-3 months out according to rumours?

It's not like you're selling it and the new book is coming out on shelves tomorrow.

Don't feel guilty, whoever bought it still has a few months of using it(just as if they had bought it at a GW or other store).
