In a Hive of Scum and Villany

Greetings and salutations!

Things have conspired to end up with me going to a tournament in July. And seeing as I've grown tired of always playing with my Space Marines (oh yes, 40k all the way) I went looking for a new army. However, I'm not one to simply take any regular army and just run with it; no no, It had to be a converted army. And thus, I found the Imperial Guard Codex, and ended up creating an army fit for a Rogue Trader! (alas, no space marines are available... unless I pick up some grey knigths).

So, with some 80 days to go, I need to completely paint and convert myself an Imperial Guard army, consistsing of 95 models, 2 Russ', 2 Chimeras and 1 Valkyrie. And this plog will be my motivating factor to get some work done!

And I've had a headstart:

Diplomatic Envoy - Korben 'Catachan' McClane (Guardsman Marbo)

"Where did he learn to negotiate like that?

Ratings & Pressgangs of the good ship Gotterdammerung (Penal Legion)

"Join the navy, they said. See the universe, they said...

So that's two of the choices down. I'm somewhat stumped as to how to actually model the good Rogue Trader himself. So far I'm thinking some sort of piratey look, coupled with some conquistadorish look as well. Anyway, his retinue is almost completed, all that really lacks is the trader himself.

Ah well, off to paint some Ratskins (Ratlings); hopefully there's an update around the corner...

(Oh, yes, I haven't done anything about the bases because I'll finish all bases in one sitting (easier for me, hehe))

C&C is more than welcome

Marco Colombo would make a great base for one as would the Empire General for a more techy style Van Saar or Commissars would work well. For none GW goodness check out Black Scorpion. Cool concept and I can't wait to see more.

He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Thanks all for the comments!

I had considered the Arbites, but voted against them - Arbites would simply be all too upstanding and law-abiding for any real Rogue Trader's agenda. So far I'm using old Cadian Imperial Guardsmen as their custodians, unless I manage to convert some in the near future. However, as I'm about to embark on converting the Rogue Trader himself then I think I'll have to let the idea of unique custodians slide for now.

Oh - and update time:

Captain's Log:
Today I can add another title to my proud and honorable name; Skychief of the Taranak Tribe, here on Mosseil V. The reason for my recently bestowed title was, apparently, due to me having the good sense to be wearing my long red coat for this formal occasion; and arriving by Valkyrie to the tribe. To these simpeltons, red is a holy colour and therefore a man, such as I, who wore this much red must be the holiest of holiest and I was not only accepted but also became the tribe leader. We are going to spend a couple of weeks at this site, to trade with the locals and see what possible gains could be gathered from these primitives. Emperor Protects.

Well, real life took it's toll, but I've finally managed to clean up my workspace; slab some paint on a chimera and an Astropath... but most importantly I've converted...

Commodore Sebastian von Fintelmann!

Here he is in all his greytone wonder. I'm rather pleased with the look of him, but of course - critism is more than welcome. I'm aiming at painting him in suitable flashy colours - red, purple, white etc. But again, suggestions are welcome!

And I managed to paint...
Harlen Di-Geordina, Astropath

So all in all, I've been quite but busy.

...Now to convert some of the boarding party... Cheers!

I love the rogue trader, but his head seems to be missing something; he doesn't seem 'arictocratic' enough for me. Just my two cents though, feel free to ignore!

Astropath looks good, and I'm eagerly awaiting the boarding party!

Cheers everybody! I'm about to turn in for the night, but here are the fruits of the late-nite conversion shop.

First off, the sergeant for the Jassyrian Mercenaries (Veterans)

And here's the prototypes for the Boarding Party (Veterans). I went for a more high-tech look as they'll mostly be aboard a Valkyrie and go about their business, paratrooping in where needed and all that (or breaching through bulkheads).

Cheers everyone!

If you want piractical models take a look at Black Scorpion lovely bloke who produces some wonderful pirates and random crew. I picked up the Privateer Captain whos a wonderfully portly 18th century dandy with a cutlass who'll be a Rogue Trader. I'm really impressed by the random mix of lovely painted models your using well done.

The owl is such a fantastic touch.

Have you though of adding sanctioned mutants, like old-school beastmen, to your list as a convict squad?

As for the Valkyrie then I unfortunately had to cop out and borrow one from a friend of mine. I'll see what can be done as to pictures, but it'll probably be after this weekend, following the tournament

And yeah, I've got tonnes of ideas for stuff to add to this army; In general I don't want any single choice to be unconverted (as far as possible) or rather - I don't want any of them to be bog standard Cadians or Catachans.

I'm considering adding some rough riders; converted from some sort of one-man-jetbike or similar. And yes, the sanctioned mutants are definately part of the idea; the more penal legions the better

Really like the variety of different units. You've really captured the rogue trader feel - swords to laser guns in that old school 40K sort of way. Nice work on the command squad.

I absolutely love this army. There's so much character over the whole thing, but it's thematically very well put together. I especially appreciate Not-Bruce-Willis-Marbo.

Cheers everyone! As I suspected for the tournament, this army lost every single game it was in. There was too much armour going 'round for this army to handle, as well as too many horde armies as well. Ah well, it was fun none the less!

The heads are from Pig Iron Production and their line of surplus heads. I'm looking at using some of the other heads for more troops, but so far I'm a bit undecided on what to go for. I think the plan is to make some Storm Troopers

Just a quick update to let you all know that Sebastian von Fintelmann isn't dead; he has just landed on a distant planet and is currently attempting to 'negotiate' terms of conquest with another Rogue Trader clan...

And thus, there will be some updates on my other plog here on DakkaDakka

Great work, and the cute blonde sidekick is a nice bonus. On the other hand, in contrast with your Captain's pose, the owl perched on his shoulder looks like it's got nerves of steel, or is resting, in a very Monty Python sense of the word.
